AMC 304 V8, surprises hiding under the disgusting. Build it or toss it? From Lucore Automotive

In the previous video of our 1979 AMC Spirit AMX project we tore down the absolutely disgusting original AMC 304 V8 to see what if anything was salvageable, or if should just be thrown in the recycler. At some point in time in the past the intake manifold and carb had disappeared leaving the intake ports exposed to the air and environment which filled it with... well watch the video.
With the full disassembly done we start assessing what we have and the results are actually a bit surprising. From the state it was in when we pulled it and the mess that fell out of every hole we opened up it seemed like this engine was destined to be a boat anchor. So into the "hot shower" and the hot tank the parts go to clean off decades of grease and grime and an honest conversation of what we find.
The end goal for this 79 Spirit AMX is to be a track car, but not in a straight line this thing is going to be used for road racing and specifically VINTAGE road racing. Many people, even AMC people, would say don't bother with the 304 and just toss a 360 in it. Is that the proper route to take? Or is what we find reason enough to look into a 304 V8 budget build to keep it true to factory as the very last of the RWD V8 stick shift AMCs?
Lots of decisions to be made, and fingers crossed as we clean and inspect just exactly what we have here!

Let's review, a built 304 is not normal. You're not exactly normal...it fits. Now the secret sauce for the 304 will be the thing that makes it work all the way around. 😜

@@thewerxshop0486 You are 1000% correct and honestly that's part of the appeal of building this 304 is people looking at me like I'm crazy. Notes on manufacturing of any AMC engine 1) All heads as manufactured will normally have a smooth surface with no machining Mark's from a milling operation. An exception to this is heads had to be run through a repair operation to remove any scratch marks picked up during the manufacturing process typically from damage to guide rails inside the transfer line. An exception to this is later 4.0 heads that will have a fish scaled appearance. This is due to the tooling used to mill the heads. 2) The deck faces of the blocks were finish milled to height. 3) All rods and pistons to were machined to a set weight tolerance. The rods on both ends. And the pistons on the face above the pin bore. The face has the two .125" (?) Holes that intersect the pin bore. Don't ask me weight tolerances. It's been a long time. 4) Starting in the 74 or 75 model year (when unleaded gas came in) all valve seats were induction hardened. 5) No 304s or 360s to my knowledge had forged cranks (same stroke, same crank). Earlier 290s and 343s may have had a forged crank option. 6) The machining of the piston skirt diameter extends into the piston ring area on one side of the piston. This is a by product of the machining process. The skirts are not round. They are machined on an elliptical of around 85°. Later 4.0 and 2.5 pistons do not share this. A different machining technique was used to control eccentricity and profile. This was actually done with a tool co trolled by an amplifier. The machine tool builder had a special program they could run and the piston would come out with their name machined into the skirt.

It's all going to come down to the heads and cylinder bores. IF the heads just need minor work but the hardware is fine, and IF the cylinder bores are OK... it's probably getting built :) Nice to see at least SOME interest in a 304 build to make a bit of power!

my 2 cents? If you plan to boost? Go with 401. Forged parts. I do have a set of 4 bolt mains if you need. Standard rebuild good to go. Great high nickel blocks. If you plan on ro;;er lifters sleeve bores and use any rollers. I used crower, after comp cams did not compinsate for bypass in main oil journal. Harmonic balancers are available. Good luck, Good job and Godspeed. Ps have run into coolant leaking around lifter bores, and diamond pistons are awsome LOL
@LucoreAuto
@LucoreAuto 3 года назад
Thanks for the 2 cents! The whole boost situation is really up in the air at this point, it's not NECESSARY but I realllly have a hankering to use one of the TorqStorm kits on something! Realistically a well built 304 should be able to get 300hp or there abouts which for a 3000lb car should be plenty quick. The advantage of having some good reuseable components in this thing is it makes this project build WAY more feasible. The 401 is by FAR a better motor and platform to build for power but BUUUUT the price to get into a 401 build is WAY more than what I really want to throw at this thing right now. Plus, the 401 is way more rare, if I were to break/injure one I would feel terrible. Actually there's a video coming on Thursday discussing some of this.... and a whole new option for this thing.

The more we find out about this little thing the more it seems like someone did it all the right way before we got here, which makes it that much more confusing. Pistons, bearings, crank turning, cylinders punched, VERY possibly head have been full rebuilt... the ugly was hiding some beautiful stuff inside. Looks like there are a few options on balancers out there, and technically still have one on the OTHER 304 that's currently in the car...

Hello LUCORE, I was surprised to SEE the 319-xxxx casting number on the engine block ... which would indicate 1970 / 1971 etc which does NOT coincide with the 4-bolt HARMONIC BALANCER you pictured earlier also - I have taken literally HUNDREDS of AMC V-8's apart = and Never - EVER seen a "304" Casting number in the Lifter Valley !!! Also quite curious as to what the CASTING NUMBERS are on your 304 cid HEADS ... if they also start with 319-xxxx You will NOT need to worry about "low" COMPRESSION - just saying :-) What was your discovery on the CAMSHAFT ??? COOP ...........................
@LucoreAuto
@LucoreAuto 3 года назад
Ohhhh now THIS is some knowledge I didn't expect, thanks for catching that and mentioning! The casting number on the block is 3195527 which according to what research I've done is used from 70-82? Which leaves a pretty wide range, is there anything from the lifter valley that would help identify this block better? I can certainly post some photos if so! I honestly didn't even think to check the casting numbers off the heads but I will talk to the machinist on Monday, he's been disassembling and cleaning them since I dropped them off. VERY interested to know what he finds!

@@LucoreAuto - generally speaking the 319-xxxx casting numbers are the desirable ones (especially on the Heads ) I could not see in / from the VIDEO ... was there a very PROMINENT "304" cast in the Motor Mount areas on BOTH Sides of the BLOCK ? 322-xxxx were generally 1972 - 1974 stuff 324-xxx was after 1974 and started getting SMOGGY & Government controlled what was the 1st part of your SPIRIT's VIN Number - NOT the numbers at the tail-end part COOP ....................................
