A bit of an update, but AMD's performance on Blender has gotten better in 3.6, since it has HIP RT support. Think of Optix, but for AMD. It's not the best, but it's much better than before.

Now that ROCm is here on windows I hope software like Blender, Adobe, Davinci Resolves will work directly on ROCm, instead of doing a HIP-CUDA remapping so that we can really see the true performance of AMD GPU if they are using application that directly supports Wave matrix compute processing.

not released fsr3.0 is amd's biggest problem right now, they dont have any kind of counter for frame gen, and it looks like they are having big problems with releasing it. Especially if more games will release like UE5 remnant, which requires upscaling to play this game with decent fps.

@ If I recall, DirectML has got a lot better early this year, before that, performance was really bad, maybe that's why AMD is making the move now. If so, it's Microsoft's fault for being so slow in supporting DirectML, and Microsoft have form in doing this with Direct Storage and DX12, it's only when pushed by others do they make the effort. If support at the OS level was there in the first place, AMD likely would have had more of an incentive in supporting A.I. and other tasks that can get a big speed bump.

I may be wrong in my understanding but it's not 6800+, that's just for the SDK (software development kit) to use for translating cuda to ROCm, the actual use of ROCm in programs is supported across the 6000 and 7000 series but developing for it requires higher
@evergaolbird

What I notice about Adobe is how their 2023 builds of their apps has been far better in RDNA2 (I have RX 6700 XT), so I cannot imagine the performance benefits ROCm support can do now in a couple of further updates can do. Looking forward seeing it action real soon. Adobe products such as Premiere, Photoshop, especially Substance 3D Painter are natively benefiting in NVIDIA CUDA support. So having them natively support ROCm will be a game changer. This will hurt further of me transitioning to Linux as my daily driver too. I've personally seen the performance difference between two natively available Software Apps in both Windows and Linux with the latter having native support for AMD ROCm (Blender in Linux) and the performance difference between the two platforms of the same app on an AMD GPU was enough to show how good was it from actual workflow/rendering and to even just booting up the app with 10-15 seconds load time difference favoring Linux. Which what some of us got really enticed to completely move away from Windows. Hopefully ROCm could make a change over that (at least with workflow performance since Linux optimization versus Windows is another big difference due to the extensive community support).

I think the accurate word for that is HIP CUDA remapping because AMD uses wave matrix and if they want to use application that only supported CUDA they need HIP to remap wave matrix(ROCm) to warp matrix(CUDA) but this in a sense create remapping penalty performance. That is why I am waiting for application to directly support ROCm instead of just CUDA, so that AMD GPU can really perform without any remapping performance penalties from HIP-CUDA.

I *literally* just started learning Linux to get into ROCM. Welp. You had a good run Linux 😢. No hate on Linux, but just like any OS, you use what is comfortable, and familiarity is a lot of that.

I tried like a month ago to convert some code based on cuda to run on amd, but quickly ran into the issue of needing hip, gave up cause it wasn't worth the hastle/time of getting linux/ or even wsl if that works. hopefully this will be just as easy as downloading and having rocm capabilities, but knowing amd this is bound to be buggy, not work, or require something else... just looked at the docs and sadly it seems i am right. AI Libraries and AI Frameworks are "Not available" :( I am assuming this means whatever hip call tensor flow is making is not available on rocm for windows. so ROCM is still useless on windows and just for linux

Saw this video last night, really good news but surely it needs to added to drivers in future. If they keep it separate I think many/most people will pass it by, and AMD can't afford that to happen they need this feature.

I am a bit of a noob on this side of the GPU market. Because the 6700 XT will not have the HIP SDK, does that mean it won't be able to use ROCm and increase it's performance in Blender and etc.?

The part of ROCm required for Blender Cycles-x Was added to Windows driver almost 2 years ago. It is just that nobody were talking about ROCm back then. It was added a couple of weeks after Blender 3.0 release. These upcoming ROCm addition are for machine learning and other stuff. Technically speaking Windows is even in advance when it come to Blender and ROCm. The support for Blender HIP-RT with ray acceleration is already available on Windows and still under development for Linux.

technically you could already use stable diffusion at decent speeds on AMD using sharkSD. its a bit annoying because every time you change the image resolution it has to recompile a new model just for that resolution, but at least it performs pretty decently, unlike other crap i tried. still prefer using stable diffusion on my laptop's rtx 2070 max-q than my 6900xt. that's how bad the situation is.
