AMD's Vega is still a relative mystery. But I'm using the same information as everybody else is to try and look at a worst-case scenario for the product, to counter out everybody else being so damn optimistic.
0:31 - Comparisons between Vega and Polaris preview
1:30 - AMD's upcoming CPUs look a lot more promising!
2:11 - AMD falling behind with GPUs
2:58 - Welcome to Vega
3:48 - The AMD fanboy echo chamber
4:26 - Geforce 1080: The competition
4:54 - Critical analysis of Vega previews
5:23 - Finewine Technology: The catch-all excuse for poor performance from early drivers
7:12 - Temperatures and power draw
8:04 - My predictions on Vega's future and competition
8:57 - Conclusion

When AMD "fanboys" got mad at AdoreTV it was because he likes to speculate too much with little to no information. During Polaris he was one of the many cause of the "RX 480 is going to be faster than 980ti just for $200" hype train. This time around he is speculating on Vega like you are with "OMFG VEGA IS A DISAPPOINTMENT". In reality there is little information on what Vega's performance other than an unfinished product with zero optimization work on it is able to run over 60FPS on 4K with Fiji drivers with a debugging layer. If it was running the current Relive drivers and had the same performance we saw on the video then yes, I would understand some inpatient people freaking out over the potential low performance. TL;DR People need to stop speculating and wait for benchmarks.

How is that laughable? A R7 250, while not being top of the line is still capable of playing any game and most AAA games at medium settings. If he mostly plays less demanding games there is nothing "laughable" about being happy with a 250
@edd7385
@edd7385 7 лет назад
yes. Very low-medium settings, sub 720p and 20-45 fps on new AAA games like battlefield 1. My question is how the fuck he managed to go buy one instead of a perfectly acceptable r7 260x wich was 20-35$ more at the time ? WIth second hand pc parts and even new ones being so cheap, it absolutely blows my mind to see people running such half assed low quality shit like this. Don't give me the ''but not everyone can afford a 1080blablabla bullshit'' Look up on how much a gtx 760 are now, RX 470, gtx 1050ti. When having a playstation 4 or an xbox one gives you a better experience than your pc, you should seriously consider upgrading.

Maybe we don't have the same definition of cheap, but for me, its a 150$ card that will give you a more than acceptable gaming experience.

As I said in the thread about AdoredTVs video: His video was based on engineering sample silicon, running through an abstraction layer over drivers from last generation, and comparing a game which has been optimized by the developer for the 1080, and most notably not optimized yet for the Vega ES. He then proceeded to take incomplete information and declare the card DOA. Trying to speculate anything at this point is a fool's errand, and trying to justify bad speculation or good speculation is no different. Wait for the benchmarks.

I bought a GTX1080 for this reason. I always felt that Buying an AMD card was just playing catch up. So, I opted for the 1080 when they came out. I paid through the nose, but this is going to have a lot longer life span than the previous midrange AMD cards I was buying. This decision wasn't made lightly either. I had been a huge ATI/AMD fan since my last nVidia card, the TNT.

@rustam11albinsky
@rustam11albinsky 7 лет назад
I'm more about the Zen cpu. I always thought Vega is going to be a better 1080, but not really a step up. Also, we have more than 6 months until Vega and I'm pretty sure Nvidia didn't show all their cards yet (because why would they? They're at the top). Let's hope when Vega is released, it'll be much better than what we see now, they have 6 months.
@ToriRocksAmos

@XGeohound

Finewine is something that goes with the lack of money, great hardware is something one can see and hold in their hand, drivers and patches are much more difficult to sell to investors. I am certain that if Vega is a success, that AMD will be able to squeeze the perfomance out of their cards from the beginning on. AMD is an underdog at the moment, that makes them so likeable.
@XGeohound

@riveraluciano
@riveraluciano 7 лет назад
A year behind? They've been doing nothing but rehashes of previous chipsets, the only advantages you'll see in a new AMD GPU is in the latest model, and it usually still doesn't surpass NVIDIA (not in power efficiency, not in temperatures, and most certainly not in overall performance). What AMD IS good at is providing hardware that lasts a few generations, much like Nvidia's GTX9800+ back then, some of AMD's cards are still rocking and can handle medium/high settings at 50+ FPS. Driver issues have not been an issue in a few years now, and if Vulkan becomes widespread, and FIJI does work as intended, then AMD could easily get themselves a bigger part of the market (those that don't upgrade every year, like myself).
@TechnoBabble
@TechnoBabble 7 лет назад
Are you implying that NVIDIA cards just stop being able to play new games after a a few generations? I'm still using a GTX 660 and am just now contemplating an upgrade because I want better CUDA acceleration in my rendering, I don't even really care much about the gaming performance, because I can still run just about anything I want anywhere from medium-max settings (depending on the game) at 1080p.
@riveraluciano
@riveraluciano 7 лет назад
Sorry, no, I'm not implying that, however the price of the AMD GPUs paired up with their ability to test time just like a good NVIDIA GPU (though we have to admit that Nvidia is more expensive) make them a lot more attractive to users who are not necessarily looking for the latest and greatest out there. Pretty much all "flagship" GPUs can stand the test of time unless there are a huge number of technological improvements that are adopted by the industry, however the competitive price of AMD is a lot more alluring than Nvidia for that matter. Still, I'd probably go green next time I upgrade.

I look at finewine more in the sense of developer's continually building games with an optimization path for GCN architecture. I assume this because GCN is in both Xbox and PS4. Maybe I'm wrong but I don't look at it like "oh they were shit on release and now we have substantially better performance in old games that performed poorly on launch".

I will almost certainly be buying a Ryzen cause I care about i5 performance. Not so sure about VEGA. I am in the market for a 1070 tier GPU, but if VEGA is going to be large and not fit in an itx case, then I'll probably go for a 1070 when the prices drop due to VEGA releasing.
@AvroBellow
@AvroBellow 7 лет назад
If they are that far behind, how has it not occurred to you that they were obviously focusing all of their resources on making Ryzen what it is at the cost of Radeon? This is clearly what has happened. Ryzen was the most important thing that AMD has released since the Phenom II and they put everything they had into it. It appears that the Radeon side of things got a bit neglected but fear not because now that AMD will have some real money and the Zen core architecture is in place, they can put money towards more R&D for the Radeon side.

If the Vega demo really is 10% faster than a 1080 on Vega, then Vega will certainly not be topping the 1080 or 1080 TI. We've seen a million times, that Doom with Vulkan runs way better on AMD than NVidia, by much more than 10%. That being said, if it is priced at say $300-$400 and out performs the 1070 it will be a good release.

Yes in some ways it is, but also realistic. Think about all of the optimizations that are being missed out due to the fact that is an engineering sample and is using modified Fiji drivers. Plus I forgot to mention that there are reports of a debugging layer being used during these demos. So for now we shouldn't judge the performance given to us since the whole setup was so unoptimized and unfinished. We should wait for the final product and the final drivers to see whether it can compete with the 1080ti/Titan XP, which I think it can.

Finewine won't do much in the Doom - Vulkan benchmark. Vulkan is an API which eliminates the need for a driver. Which is why AMD cards suddenly become faster. It's because they always made better cards for the same price, they just sucked at make drivers. - Vulkan shows the final result of "Finewine". Hence the top Vega card will probably be a bit slower than 1080... Sadly.

Mikkel A. G. Nielsen vulkan is an api, in the same way dx 12, dx 11 and opengl are. Compared to the two latter examples, vulkan givea much more unrestricted access to resources on the developer's part. But that does NOT mean drivers don't matter. Amd won't have to work as much to optimize vulkan titles for it's cards compared to dx11 because much more work is handed of to the devs, but without proper drivers, the card will still perform poorly.
@weasle2904
@weasle2904 7 лет назад
Mikkel A. G. Nielsen Well it's due to how different Nvidia's and AMD's architectures are. AMD as it is in dx11 uses heavy parallelism, and thus requires of lot of data from the CPU. That's why you usually see Intel CPUs paired with more powerful AMD cards. Not just because AMD's current CPUs suck, but because their GPUs require a lot of horsepower. DX12/Vulkan eliminate a lot of this overhead, which is good. DX12/Vulkan also have better CPU utilization. Anyways. It's not just that AMD's cards distinctly take advantage of these APIs. It's primarily Nvidia's fault.. CUDA processes work loads serially (Which is old tech tbh), while AMD's works with parallelism. This caused Nvidia to take the cake in DX11 because their serial workload implementation was much better support for it. But that's not the case in DX12. There's also asynchronous compute, which Nvidia just DOESNT support very well at a hardware level, which is why they don't get much of an advantage in DX12. While AMD actually depends on this in some cases. I'd recommend looking up videos for better explanation

To me, all of this "analysis" doesnt matter. I guess, 90% of gamers have 1080p screens and for most games, you dont need gpu > rx480 / gtx 1060. Then why? Why we care so much about these fps numbers, high-end gpus and wanting for AMD to succeed. At the end of the day, i guess, we all want to have fun playing games and all of this just interrupt experience. To me, whats really important is that most new games suck and at best are technical improvements, not fun improvements.

AMD is too late for me, I bought a 1070 and dumped my old 7800 series AMD card last September. Same with 3 of my other friends who switch to 1070's and 1060's respectively
@brunnen153
@brunnen153 7 лет назад
Why 1060 though?
@InfiniteCS
@InfiniteCS 7 лет назад
Sascha Brunner I didn't buy a 1060 but my friends did because at its price range is was far better than anything AMD had since Vega was and still isn't out, They wanted a new card and since AMD didn't have a new one yet they settled for a 1060
@brunnen153
@brunnen153 7 лет назад
Sure, AMD has no comparable product to the 1070 right now, a few of my friends also upgraded to a 1070 recently. However the RX480 is a great alternative to the 1060, so it's not like AMD has nothing. The RX480 is mostly on par with the 1060 (faster in DX12 and Vulkan), has (up to) 8GB Framebuffer and, to be fair, uses a bit more power (Still a huge step up from earlier cards).
@InfiniteCS
@InfiniteCS 7 лет назад
Sascha Brunner yea but since 1060 is so similar to the RX480 why would they go with the older AMD card over the newer 1060 when they are not to different in price ranging
@tiiBBzi
@tiiBBzi 7 лет назад
Shark Man "the older AMD card over the newer 1060" are you serious? the 480 is only a month or so older than the 1060. Then consider the PS4 Pro has a RX 470 in it... Games are being optimized for it specifically, the RX 400 series will only keep getting faster and faster. Gotta love that AMD Finewine Tech!

I mean I dont understand why anyone would be unhappy if Vega came out 100-200 dollars cheaper and about 10-20% faster than a GTX 1080. I own a Gtx 1080, And I would still be happy if the 580X or something was amazing, I would either buy one, or get a better priced gtx 1080ti or 1180 next year.
@hydrochloricacid2146
@hydrochloricacid2146 7 лет назад
Radical Moose Limb i see what you are getting at. But if vega is ~70% larger, but only 10-20% faster, that objectively means amd has engineered a lesser card. Just like nvidia did with the gtx 280 vs hd 4870. Especially considering amd has the process node advantage
@CMstacker
@CMstacker 7 лет назад
AMD *doesn`t* have a process node advantage. 14 nm over 16 nm makes no significant difference its just technical term, or even marketing one..... I wont get too technical also, but compared to Intel`s 14 nm process, which uses all elements in 14 nm size AMD`s (Globalfoundries fab) and Nvidia`s (TSMC fab) nodes seem more like Intel`s 20 nm in comparison. So they are inherently handicapped in the start and also both a step behind.... but fuck it, i hate Intel though there is no denying they have the best process and best fabs in the world. It was always like that. Even IBM can`t parry them anymore.

A larger chip usually costs more money to produce, so if the additional chip space does not result in more performance it will be really hard for AMD to sell it at a lower price. Meanwhile Nvidia can adjust their prices and still make tons of profit :/

Listen here, its kinda true that the reason why nvidia products are so overpriced because amd cant keep up with the competition, amd cant make a product as fast as the 1080 or titan xp, thats why nvidia can crank up the price of their top of the line product because they dont have to worry people will buy other product with same performance with lower price because theres aint any
@introversiongamer
@introversiongamer 7 лет назад
Sorry for asking you,, youtube decided it would put the comments in the wrong order.Amd does pose competition to Nvidia. You know the 1050ti? This overpriced shit is really close ( when talking about price) to the RX 470, yet they refuse to just low the price a little bit. And that is, considering the HUGE performance jump from a RX 470 to a 1050ti. And it just bug me that people are still dumb enough to pay for the 1050ti.
