Amelia Mary Earhart (Atchison, Kansas, July 24, 1897 - disappeared July 2, 1937) was an American aviation pioneer, author and advocate for women's rights.
Earhart was the first woman to receive "The Distinguished Flying Cross", an award given for being the first woman to fly alone over the Atlantic Ocean.
She set several other records, wrote books about her flying experiences, and was instrumental in forming organizations for women who wanted to fly.[5]
Amelia disappeared in the Pacific Ocean near Howland Island while attempting a flight around the globe in 1937. She was pronounced dead on January 5, 1939. Her way of life, her career and the way she disappeared still fascinate people today.
