Nice one, bro. If you wanted an even more generative approach to triggering the processed amen chops, you can layer all of them together in the keyzones tab, then select "random" as the overlap mode. Make a rhythmic phrase, and there you go! Infinite amen variation. 🤘 Check my renoise generative techniques video if ya like! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-mW3UCLR3m1Q.html
Hey MrZensphere, fellow Renoise RU-vidr! Love your channel bro. So interesting seeing all the advanced synthesis stuff you can do in Renoise! Keep up the good work!✌
Also dope idea for a technique. Would be super cool to create lots of duplicate versions of the amen slices with subtle variations to layer on top of each other with that random mode. Say 4 versions of the same slice all with subtle variations. Kinda like round-robin samples but for longer passages!
@@groovining thanks! Yes, there's a lot of interesting advanced techniques we can do in renoise, even if it isn't always as straight forward as it is in other DAWs... But, that's part of the charm, I guess! Dig your videos, too, man. Great stuff & very through. Cheers 🍻
Excellent video, thanks for the work you've put into this stuff. You can have as many samples as you like in an instrument, but only 256 slices (so this can be addressed with the Sxx command). Using Sxx without a note has no effect though.
Hey Renoise! Thanks for the comment. I saw the Twitter link also! :) I've gone over all the reasons why I love Renoise so much in my most recent vid. Hopefully, it will help anyone on the fence give the program a go! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-8dO57Lygflg.html
Yea for sure - things are a lot easier now! I actually bought a Akai s1000 a while ago so can fully appreciate the effort chopping breaks takes on these things :) ✌️
This is probably the video I've got closely to that. I'm sure Dillinja had a fairly similar process to his Amens. He definitly did some layering, espeically on the kick also. ✌️ ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-XOMHtp9Fpv8.html
Amazing man, I always learn something new with you, afaik you're the best channel doing production and tutorials with Renoise. Keep up the good work. The Gate to tempo workflow, I don't know how I haven't thought of that before, nice and easy!
Thanks so much Moloko, nice to hear from you again! I was the same, I felt like I'd 100% done this all before but never really understood what was actually happening to the slices!✌
Thanks so much man. I love Renoise and jungle too! Trackers are epic once you get over the initial learning curve. Stick at it and I guarantee you’ll be banging out wicked breaks out of Renoise in no time at all! ✌️
Haha yea I went deep with this project. The core idea I still use a lot though. Get all your chops out onto one program spread up & down the keyboard. It makes the sequencing and programming really fun! :)
Ahh amazing technique!! getting those variations with fx macros and resampling takes it to the next level. well done for unpicking & explaining some of the Bizzie stuff too. Cheers
Thanks so much Greg! Yea, It's actually a really fun technique and you can make these super complex sounding Paradox/Genotype style breaks without acutally having to do crazy processing later on! ✌️
The Sxx Command is cool. I actually love rendering out the slices and using the Sxx command combined with the Backwards command. You can do really cool timestretch FX, Reverse FXs per Hit of the break which is super dope!✌️
This is absolute gold mate! Taking chopping to a level that’s unique & creative. Can imagine this working with melody lines, percussion loops etc to add dynamics to a tune. Great great vid!
Thanks Matt! I'll get back to your email shortly - Just sorting all the caves audio this weekend. I like this technique a lot. I agree, its a really intresting way to bring life to any repetitive sequence. In some ways its a little like comping, where your cutting together slices of different takes to make a better whole. What I also find intresting about this technique, is that your kinda reverse engineering the process of making music. Rather than coming up with cool break variations from scratch using automation etc, You already have them all created after you record the live fx sequence. You then just have to solve the puzzle of putting it back togeather! It's like you don't really have to think too much, you just try differnt chops out until something works. All the raw ingredents are already there. ✌️
Anyone know if or how the MPC2000XL could do the akaizer style time stretch method? Afaik it can only do the zones/slices method. Bit klunky and limited. Wish the 2000XL can do what renoise could do!
Oboviously the old Akai samplers like the s950 were the original source of the timestretch. I'm pretty sure its not possible on the MPC2000xl. What you could do is resample between the MPC and Renoise and use both tools together for the best of both world!
Cheers Razzileful! Renoise is really incredible for breakbeats and drum work in general. It has a bit of a steep learning curve but if your already comfortable with Ableton you would pick it up pretty quickly. Let me know if you have any questions :) ✌️
Great tips. Another similar method we used to use is take the break, slice it up either in recycle or the waveform by hand and map it to a midi keyboard from the sampler. Then you can trigger different slices of the sample via the keyboard. That way you can get different variations, timings and feel of the original breaks. It’s a method the Garage boys like Todd Edwards uses. Loads of tiny slices of samples mapped to a midi keyboard, Todd used to just play the sounds in time to the track and he’d have all his slices tuned to the right key. Again, I know I say this a lot but we didn’t have DAWs like this back in the day and it was all done by hand on a hardware sampler. If you were lucky enough to have recycle that helped! 😅 Great tutorials though 👍🏼
Yea for sure! You've actually stumbled right into what i'm working on for my latest video! (Todd the God 👀) I've been studing his record chopping techniques which are so unique and must have taken forever to do on old hardware samplers jesus! ♱ I just love the way he's taking hits from loads of different records and pitching them all around to work togeather. Such a dope artist! Cheers dude - appreicate the comments ✌️😊
@@groovining there’s a few RU-vid vids of Todd explaining this process with his trusty Akai S6000. It’s more fun and random to use samples this way but you can use virtually any kind of source material from classical to jazz, rock etc to get small snippets of sound that gel together to make the tune. We made 2Step Garage tunes like this years back as well. I’ve still got Gigabytes of those kinds of samples from back in the day. Believe me it’s great fun! 🤩
Thanks Daniel - Explored another cool Drum Replacement technique in this new vid also you should check out! - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-VQZcTa11G50.html
awesome stuff mate, you communicate the concepts really well - I've learnt more here about making jungle in a few weeks than I have in the last few years!
Cheers Mark, I really appreicate the positive feedback! Even from this video i've gotten heaps better with the presentation and production of my vids so I hope i can keep it all going! Big ups✌️🥷
Thanks Aaron, I love going down the rabbit hole with these techniques also. Just reading a llittle segment from an article can trigger a whole load of exploration. Renoise is the best! ✌️
OKAY Brother I need your help again. Ive watched all these videos 2-3 times and ordered your sample packs but im still struggling. At 22:42 in this video you import the new chopped samples from Logic. When I do this, instead of each sample playing on each key, each key just pitches the samples up and down. Then after that if I just go to the editor I don't have the option to randomize notes. I feel like im not even working in the same DAW sometimes.
@@christopherdasconio8022 Are Phrases turned off? Did you hit 'Drum Kit' to spread out all the samples across the keyboard? It's late now but I can help more tomorrow :)
@@groovining I twas actually a button that changes pitch on or off for eac key I found that needed to be turned on for each sample. I did that and it switched it back to each sample on each key. I still cant figure out how to randomize though. I can find the randomize option when I right click in the edit screen but nothing happens. Have you ever updated your Renoise or do you still use the older versions?
How do you speed up the midi version of the amen in logic??. I’ve rendered it to the new sampler in logic but I cannot get it to speed up can anyone help please
Set your cycle length to 2 bars. Then cmd + alt + L to stretch the midi to fit the cycle range. You can also hold alt and stretch the right hand bar of the midi region but it docent always lock correctly.
