America’s Deadliest Irishman - He Trained the Devil’s Brigade in WW2

Dermot 'Pat' O'Neill was a ferocious Irishman who fought gangsters and triads on the streets of Shanghai and Nazi storm-troopers in Italy in WWII yet lived to tell the tale. O’Neill is a legendary figure in combatives history, yet little has been written about him - especially when compared to his peers, such as William Fairbairn or Francois d’Eliscu.

Thank you for your excellent presentation!!! My one wish is that this gentleman had produced written material on his systems, as WEF had done. His work spanned many decades and it is a tragedy that we do not have more of his lifetime's knowledge passed down to us. Thank you again for this fitting tribute to an amazing and inspiring gentleman.

Hi again Josie - so true - a great pity. If he had written his stuff down I’m thinking it would be as popular as WEF’s works.

While the photographs are horribly stilted. the unarmed section of the Field Manual (FM 21-150) _Deal the First Deadly Blow_ is largely O'Neil's method. The manual is in the public domain and downloadable from several online sites.

@robertlehnert4148 You are absolutely correct and I agree that the photos are horrible. The sad thing to me is that it was a different system that O'Neill had devised for the regular soldiers. It is said that the system he taught to the Devil's Brigade was for rapid training of "shock troops."After the war it is alleged he developed a system for training intelligence personnel and later a system for law enforcement. All were said to barely scratch the surface of the man's knowledge. Thanks for your reply.Always good to hear from another person who appreciated this gentleman.

If you want a more complete overview of the O’Neill system, then look into these manuals: 1) FM 21-150 Combatives 1971 (known commercially as “Deal The First Deadly Blow”) 2) Special Text Basic Hand to Hand Combat from the US Army Infantry School at Fort Benning, GA (now known as Fort Moore) 3) FMFM 1-4 Hand to Hand Combat (this was a proposed manual by the USMC in November 1966) 4) The Finer Points of Hand to Hand Combat by the BCT Committee Group (January 12, 1968) The O’Neill System had 3 parts: a basic course (which was taught at basic training), and advanced course (taught at AIT and showed a few more advanced moves) and a course for police (showing moves such as restraining holds). His system was meant for having a solid base in fighting but allowed you to do further training later. 2 gentlemen you can reach out to that know a lot about the life of Pat O’Neill are Steven Brown (you can find him on Facebook; he wrote a very concise article on his life and had interviewed many veterans of the Devil’s Brigade. He also trained with Frank Florence, who was an assistant instructor under O’Neill. Frank was the gentleman that demonstrated moves in a few of the manuals above) The 2nd is Barron Shepherd. He has a Facebook group all about the O’Neill system called “O’NEILL H2H: The O’Neill System”. Hope that helps!

I was fortunate to have known this man through my father. He would often come to our home and show me techniques and tell fascinating stories of his time in service. Shortly before his passing, he lived in our home. He was an incredible and sometimes frightening man. I never forgot the time I had with this likely one of a kind man. Now, in my adulthood, the scope of his influence has come into a clearer picture. What can be said.

@june_vlogs9
@june_vlogs9 19 дней назад
@UlyssesFiles My dad worked for the CIA. Of course, we never knew the nature of his work. O,Neill was introduced to him during this time. He began visiting our home, at which time my experiences with him began. He could not be knocked down by anyone, although my father often tried. Pat would extend his arm, inviting me to do pull-ups. I was 7 and maybe 65 lbs or so. His arm seemed to be stiff and motionless. I played chess and other games where he would identify cards by the heat signature left on them. The most recent article I read has re- awoken my memories and fascination.

The hand to hand combat of them day's, were designed for one thing , and one thing only . To survive at any cost. There were no complicated movements . Everything was for a purpose . Repetitive movements that were hardwired into the brain . If there was no weapon available to you for whatever reason . It was the mind, and body that became the weapon. Lethal moves to up your chance of survival in very extreme conditions. Another great bio of another extraordinary man .

11:08 -- RE: Commission as Captain in U.S. Army = Extraordinary?; I'm not sure that it was, considering the history of the United States on the whole. It seems to me that during the period of the Civil War, for example, the Union had been inducting immigrants practically right off the boat into the U.S. Army as volunteers (not officers on the whole, True) with the understanding that service immediately resulted in citizenship, and the payment was them surrendering their freedoms for a time because Army Duty. Another complication which meant opportunity was the nature of the Allied cause between the U.S. and the British Commonwealth, although whether he was a British citizen or not I have no idea. At any rate, the deciding factor was the U.S. Gubmint and it is famously willing to brain drain anyone at all *especially technically talented persons* to put those persons directly into its command structure.

So basically got trained by the best Kung fu master in china, as part of the chang hi police force hand to hand close quarter combat techniques full stop, which is why the close quarter hand to hand combat is fast and deadly form of kung fu known to man, simple and quick one step to kill a man ? Use what you have at your disposal and always carry a weapon on yourself, but does not look like a weapon at all, like a simple 6 inch bit of steel or very hard wood, even one end of nunchucks?

Understandable that anyone would think so, as that was how he was portrayed in the excrement roll "The Devil's Brigade." However, that anti-American propaganda piece had little to do with either the book on which it was supposedly based or with reality. Actual Forcemen hated the movie; that includes O'Neill.
