18:00 TLDR answer is world wide. Certain radio frequencies can "bounce" or "skip" around in the atmosphere and can be received world wide. This is called ionospheric propagation, skywave propagation or skip for short. An example of this is shortwave radio which allows you to listen to radio stations on the other side of the world and it dates back to the 1920s.

In 1980 I was a freshman in high school watching this play out on the news and it was very nerve-wrackiing. Because, at this time, Iran's Leadership wanted to prove they were showing that the American Bully was weak and easy to stand up to. It didn't help that my dad was in the USAF and the base we were at were running alert combat and deployment drills during this time, in the event World War 3 broke out. My dad could not leave the house and had to be ready to go in the event the alert claxons went off on base.

One slight correction to the description - at about 21:40 in this video there is mention of the location of bombardier...in an A6 the configuration of the pilot (port) and weapons officer (starboard) is side-by-side, not front and back.

They definitely had comms on the Iranian side. Amateur radio with a powerful enough antenna and good equipment can hit anywhere in the world. 100-200 miles is nothing for communications in 1988.

This was in 1988, and while there was a (pucker factor) there was also excitement, we were trained, primed, and ready to go. A lot of these sailors were ready to test their mettle in combat, especially the gunners mates. From my vantage point as port lookout l could see them jacking 3 foot shells and slapping each other on the ball and pointing at 3 Russian ships while they were getting supplies. Luckily the Captain was like no, no, thats not what we are here for.

Radio frequencies have an interesting property; for any given power level, the lower the frequency, the further the signal will travel AND the more directional it becomes. Different "frequency bands" were defined based on the general properties and range. Advanced militaries (like the US) use MULTIPLE radio systems, each tuned to different "bands", to cover all the bases and remain in as much contact as possible.

“What sort of distances” even during WW1 everyone had radios that could bounce signals off the ionosphere… civilians in the USA could receive random chatter from the opposite side of the planet. It’s safe to assume Iranian Navy had better radios than civilians decades ago. US ship and Iranian ship were able to radio each other from over 15 miles (24+km) away, at least. So somewhere between 15 miles/all across globe is everyone’s radio range.

I was deployed to the gulf the summer of 88. Our mission was to escort Kuwaiti tankers with US flags up and down the gulf. Was crazy during sand storms. The gulf gets rough. Being a QM I was on the bridge often. The best place to be in my opinion.

It's crazy that about a year later after this, Iraq invaded Kuwait after they were helping.

UHF Radio aka Ultra High Frequency Radio actually Bounces the Radio signal off the Stratosphere. If the conditions are absolutely perfect you can bounce a UHF signal around the whole of the world (it would be a very crappy signal but it can be done) UHF Radio is the most common radio for long range communications. It is used by every Military (All Branches) every airport, commercial aviation, commercial shipping. Satellite phones and radios are the second best for long range communications, they were I think satellite communications has taken the number 1 spot at least for the US Military as a whole.

In case you are curious, the distance from Dubai to Maine by sea is over 13k miles around the tip of Africa

There are also pilots, cooks, mechanics, programmers, machinists, gunners and many other professions in the navy. 2. Just because I would be classified as a technical specialist, information technology guy, PC tech, etc in the civilian world, based on my civilian career, if I made a video about flying an aircraft, am I supposed to automatically adopt the name of say, "the middle aged pilot" otherwise I can't talk about piloting? Radio works over that distance. the furthest point in Syria could communicate with the furthest point in Kuwait by radio if they wanted (less than 0.02 second delay) by old 1950s era civilian AM/FM radio. In WWII radios were used to request supply drops from bases many hundreds of kilometers away. The Iranian Navy Command could talk to their ships in basically real time. (I lived over 2,000 kilometers from New York as a kid, and we would have broadcasts from New York reach us in seconds. Not sure if satellite relays were used at the time in the late 1970s (I was young) but if civilian broadcasts could make it that far in a few seconds, I guarantee you military communications took priority, so the could talk to a ship 8+ years later that's just a few hundred kilometers from the nearest base. Jumping back to my interjection at the start. Did you notice at 24:20-24:21 the "gavel" (judge's hammer) used to proclaim "America's innocent" is a wire cutting tool? I am glad this is my first encounter with your channel, I'll check a few more videos out. [I do not mean to cross any boundaries with the comments below, I know some people get very defensive when someone offers compliments or criticisms of their significant other, please understand, I just am making observations] Dude, you've got a very respectable beard going on, and I can't judge your reaction because you're holding back to not influence her. The Fat Electrician is a great story teller. His whole goal with his channel is to tell historical military events in an way that keeps peoples attention rather than droning on and only die hard history//military fans will watch. He makes it accessible and fun for all. Yeah the Houthy's launching missiles at ships making that major trade route unsafe and then at the same time the Panama Canal has been in drought for longer than normal last year or two and the effect its has had on the lake that feeds the locks is low so its making a lot of issues there slowing passage through that major trade route.

My grandpa had a cb base station and I believe it was a 1000 watt amp and on a clear day he said he could reach Australia, so on open water with no obstructions a cb type radio would easily reach wherever you wanted, I'm pretty sure even civilian ships and boats back then had ship to shore radios

Iran was at war with Iraq during this time. I have no idea what the reasoning was for picking a fight with the US Navy though.
