America's Minor Outlying Territories, throughout the Pacific and Caribbean, have been part of our nation for over 100 years. In this video, I explore the history of the United State's acquisition of these 9 islands.

I had always thought most of the Pacific islands in this category were acquired during WW2. Evidently not so. Granted, they were often used militarily during the war -- at least during those stretches of the Pacific theater when their respective locations were in any way strategic. Several have WW2-era ruins and wreckage on them: Old Quonset huts, disused runways, etc.

I wonder why none of the U.S. minor outlying islands were on the quarter coins when they put the designs of all the 50 states & the 6 territories on them?

Im a Pacific islander & just because many of our islands are uninhabited does not mean its ok to claim for ur own ownership. We pacific islanders leave them uninhabited for vegetation to grow more so that it may grow bigger. We also use them for food storage or a place to farm. We also use some of them for burial sites.

It was almost 200 years ago. EVERY colony, islander, king, pharoah, her majesty was doing it. It was the way of the world then.

Until now i thought guano only came from bats. Ya learn something new every day.

So, you thought only bats defecated in a specific area repetitiously? Birds on islands gotta shit somewhere! Hot and dry climates cause the poop to dry out and harden. After many years of buildup it can be mined to use as fertilizer.

I spent 3 months on Palmyra Atoll (which we pronounced with a long i). Super cool place! I'd love to make it back someday, or to some of these other outlying islands. Super interesting stuff! Thanks for this!

Finally someone mentions them! Yep, I really don't like that when I was educated in NYC the territories weren't mentioned in the same way that each state and D.C. are, specially the ones with people living there! Frankly I feel confident in saying this is widespread to all school districts in the U.S. The few times I remember any where mentioned was during history class talking about the acquisition of the Philippines and the other Spaniard territories gained by the U.S. after that war, but that's about it. I feel that if kids are expected to learn 50 states and their capitals, 5 territories and their capitals more isn't that much worse!🇵🇷🇬🇺🇻🇮🇲🇵🇦🇸

@Knob Jockey I guess. But, I'm talking more about the political geography of the U.S. that is taught to people since kindergarten! They know of the 50 states that make up their country, but their country is bigger than that!
