LOL Brother I thought I was the only person that joked about running people over! 😂 10 points! Man I lived in Hickory in 2001 and loved it. Also lived in Conover in 2002 right by the 5 points (the house I lived in is gone now with the way they've redone that municipal area there!). Love these videos man.
You started at the mall? The one where 2 anchor stores are closed and half the stores are empty, like probably 75% of malls in the US? If you can only feature 5% of Hickory, I recommend starting downtown and then hitting up Springs Rd for some authentic Mexican or pho. Definitely some hidden gems out that way! Let me know if you'd like some recommendations.
I've lived here all my life. Great for retiring and doing absolutely nothing. Town is lame when it comes to night life and activities to do unless you're spending money. Few great parks, great people, crappy recreational options. I wouldn't really consider it much of a city. Just the opinion of a single man nothing special
I grew up on hickory and have some love for it. Unfortunately, drugs, namely meth, have gotten very very bad there so I would advise anyone visiting to be cautious and stay aware of your surroundings. It's also become very overcrowded. Right where highway 321 intersects 70 there are a lot of cheap motels and you need to be very aware around there. I advise avoiding the neighborhood Walmart right there as well. They just found a body behind it not that long ago and there's A LOT of crime there.
@@queenofclean5504Long View area. Hwy 70 area. I had an apartment on hwy 127 Mtn View area. Close to Hannah's BBQ, Udderly delicious etc. It was very nice and peaceful.
@@queenofclean5504 Stay away from the Longview(Wrongview) area. It's a drug infested shithole. I lived in Longview in various points of my life and it was a bad experience. Drug dealers, gang bangers and hookers walking the streets isn't worth the cheaper rent/property prices. Otherwise Hickory is a decent place to live.
I grew up in Hickory, moved away and lived in California, Florida, Colorado, New York, and Spain and then came back to be with family when my son was small. There are some activities if you have young children. Night life is almost non existent. A few good restaurants. We are located close to mountains and a few larger cities (Charlotte, Asheville, Greensboro) and we do have a lake for water activities. If they ever finish the river walk, that will be a nice trek. I suppose if you don't need a variety of places to go every weekend or evening (or don't mind a bit of a drive to other places) it is ok.
Just hope we don't keep getting flooded with people escaping there northern politics, and then voting the same way down here. Our hollers and foothills are nice. Hope we can keep them that way
@@tonyleeglenn Yeah I think we're about to move out of the congested area its in(right off Lenoir blvd in viewmont) and try to get out further towards Lake James. Thats always been the paradise, just hoping we don't get priced out too bad
Wonderful video !! About Hickory even though I saw it recently it was immersive I Wonder if someone wants to know the bousing market looking options to relocate Thanks a lot
Hickory up till around 2005 was a great place. I have been here for 48 year. There is nothing for the young people to do but ride around Walmart parking lot and pretend they're street racing up 70 in frount of the mall and all the restaurants. Its aquired a growing number of homeless do to the drugs and lack of jobs for people who have little education. But it's a small town with smaller towns all around. You can go from the town of Catawba to Claremont, Newton ,Conover into Hickory which is broke up into Viewmont Brookford ,and Longview, all within 25 miles😅😂. Main street in hickory is broken up into 4 different locations that do no connect. Like most of the streets 😢 made being a delivery driver a pain. Like I said its a small town with smaller towns not a place to protest or pull that big city stupidity or you will see how fast we become a small army. And like a reservation thing don't get found when no one is looking. What i love about it.
Wow I been camping out because I am homeless and I LOVE hickory but at night I sleep at the Walmart but I have to say on the weekends I NEVER seen the craziest things at Walmart like this EVER they are WILD at night surprise the police don’t do anything about it but besides that I LOVE IT I was born in the metro and I pray that this town don’t get touched with any of the metro people (I’m a black man saying this lol). It’s just peace
Thanks for the great video! I’m glad you spared the old couple. 😜 Are there mountains visible in other areas of Hickory? I guess I should look and see if you added more videos.
You actually will start seeing the mountains about 10 miles west of Hickory. Hickory is probably a 40 minute or so drive from the mountains to the north and west.
Wanting to move because California has ruined my state(Colorado) my sister moved to nc about 10 years ago and they loved it. Don’t worry we won’t bring Colorado “voting” we are conservative.
Tony thanks for the video moved from CA. Marietta GA 6 yrs ago looking at a smaller home by a lake so I can walk and enjoy my retirement, two grown working daughters also tagging along looking at Hickory Lakes ?
17:47 If I remember correctly, my elementary guidance counselor used to live there and in fact worked at Oakwood Elementary, the one you happened to pass by.
There are a lot of wooded parks in Hickory & the surrounding areas for off-road cycling. No bike lanes but I have seen cyclists riding in the streets. The town has cycling events. I’ve only lived here a few years but the Nc Cyclo cross Races have been at Sanford Park every year I’ve lived here.
I graduated from Hickory High in 97 I haven’t been there since 2001 so this was amazing to watch! I forgot how easy it was to get lost when I moved there because every street is a number or north west south west and we didn’t have gps then! I got lost so much when my family and I moved there in 95! I’ve lived all over the south since and it’s amazing how the place has grown but how little traffic there is! I’m in Wilmington NC now and it takes me an hour to get to work, it’s 14 miles away. I always thought Hickory was beautiful but personally, most of the people were rather nasty, I didn’t like it. The people can make or break a place. My parents eventually moved out as well because of the people. But thank you! This was great!
I love Wilmington, but you are right about the traffic. My brother-in-law works at UNCW. I'd say things have changed a bit in Hickory over the years. I think there are a lot of good people there. Come back and visit us again when you get a chance. See if you agree!
As a Valdese guy who works in Morganton - I would totally agree. I really like Hickory, but there's something more friendly and charming about Morganton. I really dig it at night on the weekends. Thanks for the comment.
Just a correction- not a U-Haul Headquarters. That’s in Phoenix. The NC district "marketing company" (as they call it) are not in Hikory either. That’s just a regular U-Haul Center. The confusion may be that they have a lot of business who are dealers in the area (rent out trucks for a cut of profits). Anyway, great drive through the area. Much appreciated.
Depends where you’re coming from. I moved here from NJ, which is highly diverse. It’s much less diverse, but the people are friendly & no rush hour traffic!
Bull, there isn't sh*t to do in Hickory, I've lived here most of my life. If I ever go out I have to go to Charlotte or Asheville or Boone and those are all about an hr to an hr and half away.
@@tonyleeglennexactly I’m from the Charlotte area and Charlotte and the metro is a NIGHTMARE people drive like murderes u can’t really enjoy your self the quality of people has been flooded with migrants and the yankees
Nice video. I am a transplant from Oregon. Been here in Hickory since December of 2000. I was blown away when I first moved here and everyone waved at me. I thought they must be waving at someone else until I was told that they were waving at me. Where I am from, there wave is a middle finger. Lol. I like living here and other then the humidity in the summer, this place is great
