I currently serve in AFGSC. Not even the most anti-Chinese hawk wants to see something like this happen. If these weapons never get used to retaliate or harm an opponent and the US is kept safe from a nuclear attack then the deterrence mission has succeeded. Usually I would say my opinions are not meant to represent the views of the USAF but this is one case where I believe it does.

Actually most of our response plans for nuclear war are widely known and can be researched publicly. I served in the Army and was stationed at a base with nuclear missiles at it and...this is really really accurate. When the first nuke drops, the gloves come off. We don't care who dies or how many because we know there's a chance everyone can. We will drop nukes everywhere if it's a worthwhile investment long term.

But that's the reality. You can't win a nuclear war, even a limited one. There's no Counter-Value or Counter-Force strike scenario that allows you to pretend that you won't be forced to accept enormous casualties and destruction of both military and civilian assets. (We won't even contemplate successful decapitation strike scenarios, which are insane fantasies.) Therefore, with victory impossible, all that you have left as a war aim is to ensure that your adversary suffers an even greater defeat than you do. It is only the knowledge of the ultimate futility and horrific nature of nuclear war that has prevented one from occurring.

Just a few corrections: B-52s don't have JATO capability, and the JATO program on aircraft that DID have it (C-130, B-47, etc) was scrapped due to multiple failures/crashes. And there are also only 58 B-52s in service, so they won't be scattered across "hundreds" of civilian airports. Not to mention the safety, political, and maintenance hurdles that will come with trying to land bombers there.

When i was In SAC we were briefed by a 2 star General at the Movie theater the whole base was to attend over that week, he told us our Job was to get the bombers off the ground in less than 45 minutes cause a SOVIET ICBM would hit our base, that meant we were all going to die once the bombers were airborne. you could drive at 100 mph and still not survive the blast radius .you needed to fly at jet speed of 500 mph to escape .

B-52's don't use JATO (Jet Assisted Take-Off). I don't think they ever did. The older models prior to the current H models used water-injection to boost engine power. B-47's on the other hand did use JATO.

The US is fighting back in a different way then in previous confrontations. We are pressuring them economically instead of with threats and military power. With the majority of trade in the world using the dollar America has complete control over many other countries economies. With several bans and sanctions against Chinese companies as of late this is the beginning of their downfall. It is not often you get to see the fall of a superpower so sit back and enjoy the show

Between both THAAD and GMD I don't think I'd call a one in three hit chance terrible. This isn't including the defense system the US has in South Korea which will be able to more easily take out those cruise missiles because the easiest time to eliminate a nuclear cruise missile is when it's first being launched.

originally, global strike command was named strategic strike command and yes it was in charge of the us air force's nuke strike forces. now, global strike command is more of basically the us air force's bomber forces in general
