Think you need MORE protein in your diet? Think again! Watch Nutrition Scientist Christopher Gardner, PhD explain the American obsession with meat and protein-enriched products at the February SOUL Food Salon. See the full powerpoint at soulfoodsalon.com!
If you eat lots of vegetables and grains. it turns out you are already getting all the amino acids (protein) that you need to satisfy your daily requirements. And yet, most Americans are buying into the idea that they always need MORE protein in their diets, fueling meat industries and harming the environment.
With charm and warmth, Christopher explains his life's work in nutrition and his current successes at Stanford in diet studies involving vegetarian and vegan diets. With periodic Q&A, he progresses into a slide show of statistics and charts to show his findings.
At the end of the slideshow, Christopher takes more questions related to protein consumption, including queries about GMO produce, the difficulties of comparing eating habits in different countries, meat grown in a test-tube and more! Subscribe to this channel to see videos of future salons on food related topics!

This is An additional perspective. Quantifying the amount of protein needed daily the components in the animal and plant protein and how much protein is in typical meals and total calorie requirement for one day is quite instructive and useful.

On a **personal** note, I agree with the statement that protein is not satiating in and of itself. The way I eat makes it extremely easy to vary protein content, and I have never experienced differences in satiety.

@@cincin4515 which is whyyyyyyyyy we tell you to eat less of them in the beginning. No one said go pedal to the metal from the start line I used to have issues, but now can literally eat a cup of beans and rice, vegetables, etc and *might* fart twice a day. PS; very *very* few people are produces of methane gas. Cows are ruminators, which is why they produce it

Without grains for me, though! I feel best on raw ripe fresh organic alkaline produce. Mostly fruit and greens. Greens contain amino acids and fruit surely too. At a recent raw food summit they said that a raw food water needs half the amount of protein to build muscle. Exercise helps build muscle and eating enough in case you see skinny raw vegans looking like death!

Correction: Your body stores carbohydrates as glycogen in the liver and muscles. EXCESS carbohydrates in your diet are stored as FAT. Very small amounts of protein can be converted to carbs (glucose) via gluconeogenesis.

I like Stanford U. I'm currently listening to one of their lectures about how Atkins diet blows several diets out the water.

In what sense though. While this is not proof, Atkins was quite fat himself. It can be easily seen in this video from 2000: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-zJ-2M02ON5E.html In other words, his diet did not seem to work for him.

The pro-protein doctors claim it increases satiety leading to weight loss, and muscle mass which lincreases longevity.
@dogberry20
@dogberry20 5 месяцев назад
It's true protein increases satiety, however the number one factor increasing satiety is bulk. Plant foods fill you up more for fewer calories. Sure 2 oz of steak might fill you up more than 2 oz of apples, but 200 calories of apples will fill you up more than 200 calories of steak. Also resistance training builds muscle, not protein.

@@doddsalfa that person didn't even watch the videos to educate themselves or else they wouldn't have written this uneducated comment. The issue is that protein from vegetables does not get absorbed well. Same for mushrooms. That is why some meat ingestion is important. Eskimos eat a ton of protein, and they are fine.

The issue with most plant proteins is you have to eat a lot of sugar with them. The glycemic load of beans and grains are way too high to justify mobilizing that much insulin in addition to the amount needed for protein.

So not a medical Doctor. 🤔 There are many ways to eat healthy. My personal preference is….. Firstly avoid processed and ultra processed food. Secondly eat real food. Thirdly avoid what some people consider healthy food which is actually processed…flour, fruit juices, honey, syrups, sugars , starchy vegetables (including potatoes in all forms). Eat protein (fish, beef, chicken, pork, lamb, eggs etc). Eat leafy green veg (cabbage, broccoli, spinach, real lettuce not iceberg, kale, peppers, tomatoes) Mushrooms and edible fungi. Plenty of olive oil. Small quantities of dairy, full fat yogurts, kefir, cream, and cheese. Spices and herbs for flavour and for your gut. Small quantities of berries (blueberries, strawberries and raspberries). Have plenty of kimchi. A square of 99% chocolate as a treat every day. Coffee 2 hours after you wake and not after 12 MD. This will reverse metabolic syndrome affecting close to 50% of people in the developed world. You will feel less hungry and you’ll reverse a fatty liver allowing your liver to begin to function normally within 2 weeks.
