Songs in order: 0:04 Metallica - Blackened 0:30 Destruction - Nailed to the Cross 1:00 Slayer - War Ensemble 1:19 Sodom - Nuclear Winter 1:52 Megadeth - Wake up Dead 2:30 Kreator - Blind Faith 3:05 Anthrax - Indians 3:34 Tankard - Need Money for Beer 4:10 Megadeth - Tornado of Souls 4:40 Sodom - Tired and Red 5:19 Oh, that’s kind of a tricky one, uh... It’s gotta be Enter sandman or something, right? Nah, I was just kidding, it’s Metallica - Master of Puppets 5:50 Tankard - The Horde 6:23 Anthrax - Among the Living 7:03 Destruction - Curse the Gods 7:33 Slayer - Angel of Death 8:02 Kreator - Betrayer I always liked how all of the german big 4 is all dark, evil and sinister and then you just got Tankard making songs about beer and fat people Great guitar work like always
Every catchy Anthrax riff comes from just one album, with the exception of A.I.R....never understood why they are big 4 when Suicidal Tendencies later thrash work was so much more consistent. Listen to Prime Cuts and see.
@Rob been listening to thrash since it was invented man, I doubt going through it yet again will change my opinion but it is, in fact, just my opinion.
@Rob Maxwell We do have a lot of metal heads, well my generation definitely... I'm still in a metal band at my age 😁.. The younger generation not so much... unfortunately..😟
Grew up in school (first half of 80’s) with American Metal, served in the military in Germany (second half of 80’s)with German Metal. I basically lived with all of this. 🤘🏼
Same here. 80s metal head that joined the Army in 1988 and went on to Germany from 1988 to 1993. Remember picking up Sodom, Tankard and other cds on the economy in K-town
@@Baumscheibenkunst Great band i love the " shedding of skin " album . Skipped Protector while it is more death-thrash for me. We did a "face fear" cover , you can find it at my chanel 🤘
Tankard sounds different, because they involve something that is produced with"Reinheitsgebot" which makes that ingredient special to their music. They need that, lots of it :)))
I don't know if a lot of you are paying attention to the guitars he's using to play those songs but most are pretty damn accurate representations of the originals from Hanneman's Raiders ESP to Mustaine's Flying V. That extra bit of detail really bright it all home. Excellent video comparison of those mighty bands.
Kreator is the winner for me! Their late albums had all the strong qualities of other good thrash metal bands. Sinister black metal vibe of sodom, melodic/nostalgic/melancholic/well structured/whatever you call it vibe of metallica, megadeth kind of complexity, and raw brutal force/groove of slayer
Destruction is by far the best band. Kreator and Sodom got boring after the proto-death/black metal stuff, and Tankard is great but sounds just like any other American thrash band with strong hardcore punk influences.
@@21Dimeni think it comes down to rhythm. American thrash is usually slower and consistent in rhythm, which is more technical and precise. German thrash was always faster and more experiential, with variable pacing and more unique and obvious sounds. I prefer the generally faster pace and heavier transitions of German, as the flat us rhythm seems to slow down in my head as it goes on. Though I'm more a prog death or Doom guy 🤷🏼
I love the Teutonic 4 of German Thrash! I’m always going back fourth between Kreator, Sodom, Destruction, and Tankard! This is a really kick Ass video! 💪🏻🤘🏻😎
@@partidascompletasdefutebol It's spelled Zeppelin, and no you are completely wrong. Educate yourself, it's free. Your life will be a lot easier if you take a little time to read up on topics you are unsure of. Cheers mate
Absolutely LOVE the tone of this whole production. After being a metalhead fro over 30 years, I am still enjoying it every day! Cheers for such a great video!
yeah early Destruction and sodom also Kreator where an inspiration for the second wave of Black metal...and was known in the BM community as Black Thrash🤘
That could be because black metal was born of thrash. Thrash got it's start from punk in all honesty. That being said, all forms of rock got it's start from blues and and even jazz. We American's, from the 70's and earlier, started out just trashing and hating on the extreme stuff. The European's took it and ran with it.
@@stevenwashington9947 Thrash didn't come from punk. Pretty much every band featured in this video started off as Iron Maiden or Judas Priest clones before mixing in the punk/hardcore influences.
@Non sum dignus nah bro, Megadeth isn't that fast and aggressive. Megadeth is more melodic and technical. Well, that's my opinion. But I can't compare Megadeth to one out of German Big 4. Maybe to Destruction. But I can compare them to Annihilator lol (one of the canadian big four). I definitely recommend them!
For iconic riffs I'd say American thrash wins. German thrash is ok too, but it isn't very similar to American thrash in terms of melodies and riffs. German seems more like death/black metal with a hint of thrash.
Sure, if you've aged a lot in metal you become wiser, you don't need that kind of conversation of "who's best", it add nothing to the beauty of those bands they are great, they've done a lot to metal, we should be thankful to them, for those years of dedication. They've inspired too many death and black metal bands they are the godfathers of extreme metal, we should show them respect.
Some other good ones: Sodom - Shellfire Defense Tankard - Open All Night Anthrax - A.I.R., Imitation of Life Slayer - Spirit In Black Kreator - No Reason to Exist, When the Sun Burns Red Not big 4, but very, very close: Holy Moses - Necropolis, Nothing For My Mum Exumer - Possessed by Fire Exodus - Strike of the Beast, Faster Than You'll Ever Live to Be Overkill - Brainfade, Electro-Violence
You know it’s been said that without Dave Mustaine that there might have been no thrash metal. His rhythm playing is as good as anybody’s lead playing. Just sayin’
@@jrock8233 it's been said. But KEA would have come out in one form or another with or without him. And I believe Metallica has gotten more players started. Can't argue with the ticket sales and touring schedule. A shitload of people have been coming out to see Metallica for 4 decades.
I am very late to the comment section but this video just showed up and brought me back to my younger and in the Army days. I always loved Sodom and Kreator. Destructions Mad Butcher EP was a must-have back then. I was also lucky enough to see Kreator on their Extrem Aggression Tour when I was stationed in Germany. Good times!
I grew up in the 80s/early 90s, visiting Germany to see my family at least every other summer and my cousin introduced me to the German thrash scene...so I get especially nostalgic when I listen to these bands. Thanks for a cool video...sehr geil!!!
So nice covers man! Difficult to decide... But no second thought, I'll go with the Germans big4! Especially Kreator!!! Getting older, getting better! I love them
Awesome video! I had to google one band; that is just testament to the thouroughness of this compilation. I have been rocking out for nearly forty years!
@@jamieheim8009 Fuck me. James and Lars wish Dave would help the write some songs these days. Dave shits out smooth metal riffs in his sleep. Kurt plays wah.
I always considered the Thrash made in Germany superior: heavier, faster and a little bit more technical, without mention that the Germans added the guttural voice so it sounds more aggressive, but we have to keep in mind that what they did was the evolution of that new sound Americans created a couple of years back. So yeah, America created it, but Germany perfect it.
I loved all of your song choices, excellent representation, and I do love battles, so I guess I stumbled upon the right channel to sub to 😊🤟 Beautiful masterful work btw
Good job on those covers. I’ve been listening to thrash metal for thirty plus years, that’s all I listened to in my sophomore and junior years. I like all of the bands that you played like Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer and Kreator. But the American Thrash Metal bands started to change their sound in the 90’s, whether it was them or record label idea. America started to embrace Alternative and Nu Metal, the German bands stayed the same and never sold out to anyone, some even got harder. Maybe you can do a second tier of American and German Thrash Metal; Exodus, Testament and Overkill don’t get love and they like their German brothers never changed their sound. Anyways, I look forward to your next video...🤟🏻🤟🏻🤟🏻
I love hearing all these riffs on equal ground from the same guitar and with the same recording quality. Some of the earlier albums are mixed so quietly that you don’t realize they’re just as heavy as Metallica and slayer. I love sodom and Kreator and some of the re-recordings That destruction has done of their hit songs sound amazing too.
Indeed, I saw them live in 2018 in Mexico City, they totally kicked ass, people went crazy, they put up a great show (There are videos here on YT). Can't wait to see them this year along with Kreator, Sodom and Destruction in Monterrey, yes, the 4 german in the same night. I've told friends that Tankard should play 2 to last, or maybe the last of the 4 given what I saw in Mexico City...
I've always loved how there's subgenres / distinct sounds WITHIN the subgenre of thrash.... like a band like Kreator sounds extremely different from a band like Death Angel... Kreator has that more blackened thrash feel while Death Angel gives me thrashy/skate vibes
Love all these bands and being originally from Germany and living in the US I try to show all my metalhead friends that don't get much foreign exposure the tectonic big 4. Kreator is my all time favorite
Honestly, I am a 50 something year old metalhead from the USA who lived through this era, never heard of a British big four. I heard Kreator, that's it, never heard of those other bands. Guess they weren't promoted in the USA. Sounds like music I would have liked. Will definitely check it out.
Your Videos are soo cool man keep up the good work !! I really like that you hype yourself up while you are playing the other Riff. It just makes me smile so hard :D
German thrash, especially Kreator and, to a somewhat lesser extent, Sodom, were basically taking the aggression of Slayer and amping it up even more. I would say that those bands were basically playing death metal, before it was a thing, so therefore I think the Germans made thrash more brutal, but in terms of memorable, groovy thrash, I give the vote to America. It was put together better, and I'd say that musicianship was better with the likes of Hetfield, Mustaine, Cliff Burton, Dave Lombardo, and Hanneman in particular, and Anthrax's rhythm section was and is extremely tight
@@TheSuffocater I would choose Groove Metal bands like Lamb of God, Chimaira, Sepultura (groove era), Gojira and Thrash Metal bands like Testament, Sodom, Kreator, Coroner, Slayer, Celtic Frost. There are a lot of choices to choose from, anything you will choose is good for me. If I won't recognize some band it's good oportunity to new discover.
@@shannonwyatt1286 Skolnick destroys just about everyone, to be fair. But, if anyone is gonna give him a challenge that isn't in his own band, it may be Waters.
Yes, it was fantastic to be a metalhead in Germany in the 80s. A huge German metal scene, tons of good bands and still getting to know what was going on in England and the USA and also what was going on in Europe. Every week there were a few good bands playing somewhere, and with the ticket prices at the time, we saw everything we could afford. 50+ concerts a year were not uncommon. I didn't realize how special it was until I was talking to my American cousin during a visit, who complained about the horrendous prices for concerts. The costs were similar to what we pay nowadays.
