I am African of Sierra Leonian descent, my father was Temne. What Dna database did you use? Because if you want more specific results, I'd go with African Ancestry.com for breaking down tribes and clans.

I uploaded my dna from Ancestry to my LivingDNA and found out my ethnic groups. My biggest percentage is Nigerian and I have Yoruba, Esan, and Igbo heritage. Yoruba was the biggest percentage for me tho.

You can do African Ancestry or Gedmatch. I've found them to be more accurate and they have a more diverse and international database.

@Umbuko DaJuko No they aren't. They are a minority group in Nigeria. Though they seem to be a majority group in countries like Niger Republic and Chad. I'd need verification for that though. The Yoruba ethnic nationality spans several countries in West Africa including Nigeria, Benin Republic, Togo, Ghana and Liberia. There are also huge chunks of Yoruba people indigenous (through transatlantic slave trade) in Brazil, Cuba and the Carribeans generally. In fact, they practice the Yorubas religion which varies in name according to the country. It's called Santeria, Vudun etc in these Carribean countries as well as Brazil and Cuba. There's an indigenous Yoruba village somewhere in the US. I've forgotten the name now. So, Yoruba people are over a hundred million worldwide. Definitely around 55 million in Nigeria alone if not more.

Is your family from the DMV/DC Maryland area by any chance? Most Igbo slaves in the mainland US were transported to Virginia and Igbo have been there since the 1600s. Other Nigerian slaves were in the Carolinas, Connecticut, and Louisiana but many of these were Yoruba, Hausa, and Fulani. Even more Nigerians began to immigrate to the DMV in the 1980s Igbo especially. I’m Yoruba and the reason I know is because both sides of my family are descendants of slaves from Louisiana and since Louisiana was a French (Yoruba Religion actually played a huge influence on Louisiana Voodoo) colony who documented everything, they kept track of what tribes the slaves actually were unlike most English slave owners. There are a few websites that are dedicated to keeping records of all the plantations throughout the south and east coast. Chances are your last name came from a slave owner and not an actual European ancestor so if you can find out what state that slave owner’s plantation was in, especially if you can narrow it down to what county, city, town, or village, you can find out even more about your family’s history with better odds.

That's true but you also have to remember a lot of our ancestors did come from Latin America. Slavery in the Hispanic Caribbean was going on well before the US and a lot of the slaves in the Gulf Coast and Florida came from the Spanish islands. And slaves in South Carolina, North Carolina and Virginia were split between coming from Africa and from the islands owned by the Anglo. I only have a negligible amount of dna that matches Igbo. Most of my Nigerian dna is from Yoruba and Hausa tribes. I'm from TN but my roots are from VA, GA, LA and AL (which many of them got to LA & AL from VA and the Caribbean).

I am happy to do a video for black women and their roots. The women were from different tribes because they enslaved African women based on different variables and not just strength like the men. So the women have roots in varying tribes. I'll do a video on this if it is wanted. I am glad your son is proud to be Igbo. This can be the starting point for cultural immersion. Curtis, yes it is possible to be a mix of the three. This is because during slavery when they kidnapped the Africans they did not separate them by tribe in the USA. For the captors all they saw was property. What we learned in class is that when the africans were in the western world they were forced to breed slaves with multiple women regardless of tribe. For example if an enslaved man was yoruba and he was forced to breed with a woman who is hausa and another who is igbo the child born would be mixed tribe. If this child then bred with either tribe the child would be mixed of three tribal lineages. Despite the fact that we were enslaved the DNA is powerful because it tracks the bloodline. I'm a southern Nigerian from the Yoruba tribe and we're the one with the swag.... we originated the Afrobeat movement and we dominate the Afrobeat music scene because of the Yoruba language plus the fact that the Yoruba language is used during the transaction for a business . its somehow similar to how we use English globally for business too especially in Lagos State, Nigeria . Also, We the one with the spraying of them dollars in every party, dripping in jewelry, with the flashy lifestyle which I hate but hey, who am I to judge lol. So the Yoruba tribe is also extremely educated likewise the Igbo. On the other hand, the Igbo are more driven when it comes to businesses like the Chinese in Nigeria and they are strictly catholic from my understanding, whilst the Yoruba practice both Muslims and Christian they are somehow flexible in their approach whilst the Igbo from Eastern part of Nigeria is more rigid with their culture more than their catholic religion. We also have the Hausa's/Fulani's predominately Muslim in the northern part of Nigeria, they are more rigid regarding culture religion and business. so every time u here terrorism in Nigeria comes from the Hausa and the Fulanis because they refused to be educated during colonization they are some similar to the middle east from my observation Now outside Nigeria. We have more Yorubas in the Uk and in Texas and the Igbo are more in Germany and in Atlanta from my understanding in America. The Nigerian population is like 200 million the largest black nation in the world. Think of Nigeria as like the United States where u have east coast west coast south divided into 50 states. In Nigeria, we have 36 states. My advice would be to make friends with them and they can help you out better understand the culture and language. This is a powerful example of the passage of Africans to the Americas during enslavement. They tore families apart and African tribes that were different for one another were forcefully kidnapped and brought together to the west during this time.

Benin people are Edo, however I think your referring to the country Benin, which is partly Yorubaland. Yoruba people come from both Benin and Western Nigeria. The Bight of Biafra is where mostly Cameroonian slaves were transported from, not Igbo. There are many ethnic groups in that region and Igbo people are not coastal, they live within the interior.

You should take the Living DNA test. It will break down your DNA to tribes in Africa. For example: I am an African American that is 89.4% African and 10.6% Great Britain and Irelend. Of the 89.4% African, 74.5% comes from West Africa, no surprise there. Now, Living DNA breaks down the 74.5% West African part as follows: 19.8% Yoruba, 9.5% Mende, 7.9% Mossi, 7.5% Semi-Bantu, 7.1% Bamum, 7.1% Esan, 6.5% Igbo, 3.3% Tikar, 2.1% Mankinka, 2% Kassena, and 1.8% Cameroon Bantu; so, from my perspective I am Yoruba. The strange thing is that I am also 8.9% East African, which is very rare for an African American as the slave trade happened on the West of Africa. Living DNA breaks my East African down as follows: 4.3% Luhya, 2.5% Malawi Bantu, and 2.1% Kenya Bantu. I am 6% South and Central African that breaks down to the following: 2.5% Southeastern Bantu, 1.9% Ovambo, and 1.6% Sotho-Tswana. African Ancestry will do the same breakdown but it costs far too much: $300.00 as opposed to $69.00 that I paid for the DNA test with Living DNA. Living DNA also provides autosomal, mtDNA from your mother so that you will obtain mtDNA Haplogroup, and your Y-Chromosome and Haplogroup from your father. African Ancestry charges your $300.00 for each type of test and does not provide or test for autosomal. Also, African Ancestry provides your results by snail-mail and African Ancestry's website does not provide or is set up to show you your test results, bad customer service from my perspective. All African Americans should start with Living DNA first before using African Ancestry to save cost and time. After getting your Living DNA results you can determine if you want to spend the extra money for African Ancestry DNA results.

Christian, thank you for your thoughts. First, Bantu is not only a language grouping it is an ethnic/cultural identifier. I know this for a fact. There are books written on this by Africans themselves. Not Europeans but Africans. I am one African born and raised and went to school back home. I know this is FACT. Second, The only thing you forget is that the slaves were not taken from where they were born. They were kidnapped from many parts of Africa and then taken to these ports. Infact part of the success for he kidnappings is to take people from the inland and then have them at the ports with an inability to communicate due to different tribal lineages. The fact is this: The Ancestry DNA that African Americans have taken on this end here in the WEST do predominantly show ancestry from these tribes in west Africa. I am not saying it is the case that all Afro Americans are from these 3 groups, but LARGELY from these 3 groups. I hope this clarifies. Thank you for adding to the conversation.

You probably did the Ancestry DNA company's test. The one that will tell you ethnic groups is the African Ancestry company's test. That company is owned by a Black woman, and doesn't share or sell your genetic material or information.

With more digging and research I'm fairly sure i am Yoruba and Igbo, Mende, Akan, Amazigh, broadly Kenyan (so that could be anything from Swahili which could be where the south India becomes from, or Kikuyu) Maasai, Polynesian, Native American and of course my mother is Korean. So I'm pretty much a 50/50split if African and Asian. Most of my black ancestry on both my Grandparents blood lines is mostly Yoruba though. Especially those of us who are Gullah descendants we have Mende and temne ancestry because of the rice growing plantations. And if you are over 90% African or one of your ancestors is, and a significant amount of Thier ancestry is from the Nigeria region, you most likely had ancestors brought to the USA from the Caribbean. I found a lot of this by asking the same question to Google in different ways, or stumbling upon things by chance. But hopefully we can all fully know and reconnect.

That is true. However for some of my viewers they may want to know their roots and perhaps visit their relatives back home. For them this sense of identity might mean a lot.

I disagree because our culture is alive and well in The Caribbean, Central, and South America! It's just the Blacks that came to America later in 1607 that lost their culture. Part of it was because they sent a lot of the original slaves that came in 1492. Up to The Last country in America to be enslaved and I'm sure they sent the young one. But, there were a few that came to South Carolina (The Gechees) that came from Africa and retained some of their heritage also. As a 1st generation American, I learned our true tribe as a child from my parents. As an adult, I researched it along with true Ancient Biblical History! And I'm glad I did because we are Igbo which was a special tribe that came from Israel the Tribe of Gad! That's why they are so spiritual! But when I tried to tell the USA Black people about our African religion and culture their Eyes & Ears became closed and all they could think of was Christianity and White Jesus! I tried to tell them how Haiti was the only Island that used our Religion and overtook the French and stayed free! They even went to South America and helped free some of their countries! While USA Blacks waited on their Euro-American Masters to allow them to appear free after they knew they had developed Stockholm syndrome. Now you can't break them away from the chains in their minds the Christian church!

So I understand your view point. The great thing is though after talking to each of my Nigerian friends they all agree that black men are intelligent, motivated and have dreams and inspirations. @@Kadzowe Yoruba. Spiritual, not Igbo. Igbos are the smart and business wise. The Hausas are not the smart and articulate ones, that description belongs to the igbos. Articulate and business oriented. But the Hausas are semi nomadic, are Muslims and they do farming and trading. But it's the Yorubas that love more about education and they are the true spiritual tribe in Nigeria, the igbos too love trade, but they are more inclined to business. I mean they do it big. And they are more smart than other tribes.

That's true. This is because the slave owners separated our ancestors so they wouldn't be able to communicate among themselves and they would indoctrinate their culture on them. I think what OP of the video is saying that those tribes have the biggest populations in West and Central Africa(Nigeria is very populous), it's likely we're at least one of those 3 tribes.
