Kylie is the ONLY artist whose music I purchase full price for everytime since I started purchasing her music in 2004. I am a serious Kylie fan based in the U.S.
suavehinrg I follow her too but it's a fact that many people in this country do not even know who she is (classmates of mine for example), and some talentless "artists" are know worldwide.
I understand the feeling. In the time before social media took over, I used to call and hit of the radio websites relentlessly to play Kylie's singles. Once, I succeeded in getting a radio director to add Kylie's hit single "The One" from the album "X" into three consective months of regular airplay. It is easiler to promote her music now with U.S. fans doing so through social media.
I'm a fan and I'm from the US, but I completely understand why she isn't well-known. She was literally a breath of fresh air for the radio when Fever came out, but she couldn't be bothered to tour or promote more here during that time. Then when she followed up Fever with Body Language most of the tracks sounded like early late 90s/early 2000s R&B--which was on the way out. Slow was a decent lead single, but wasn't representative of the sound of the album and really wasn't something that would light the charts up like her singles from Fever did. Couple that with the complete change in image and I'm sure most people that were casual fans of Fever didn't really know how to take her. From a business standpoint she and her team made terrible moves. She simply didn't strike while the iron was hot and failed to capitalize on what made her successful. If you enter a market sounding relatively unique and end up sounding like everyone else, people are just going to go back to listening to the people they are more familiar with that you sound like. She moved on to a greatest hits album (which I don't think was accessible here, at least not for a while), had to go on hiatus due to cancer, and was pretty much an afterthought by the time X came out. (Not that X would have done well here anyways.)
Kylie is probably the only international pop star NOT that bothered about success in the US. She has never really pursued it and the success she has had there has almost happened on its own. She has sold millions of records there. But being such a huge star in the rest of the world is a big enough job for most.
70 million worldwide without making a huge dent in the US is impressive. Im sure had she had the same success here she would be the best selling female singer of all time. I never understood why she was so underrated her. I also don't understand How Can't Get You Out Of My Head didn't go to #1 here when it was released.
When I was in the US in late 80s , kylie was quite popular there . She especially had many male fans as she was so cute and she had some catchy songs back then. But her early 2000 albums were her best work
Even as an American who has loved Kylie for 20+ years, I agree. She doesn’t need us. But I’d spend all the money to go see her if she ever came to the US.
There’s something about Kylie. Without mentioning names, so as not to belittle or demean or downplay other female pop artists, she remains fresh and exciting. Whereas others lose momentum, or remain stagnant, she is a forever a breath of fresh air. Love her to pieces.
Kylie live in Sydney (2000) is one of my all time favorite concerts. Regards from Argentina!!! Promise to visit Australia after the pandemic ends. Aussies rock!
I'm not a big fan of modern pop music, but what I would say, as an American, about Kylie Minogue, is that it's nice to see a pop star not mired in scandals, drugs, corruption, and other dysfunctions. You never hear anything like that about her. She doesn't try to shove politics down your throat. Also seems to be pretty friendly
Good point, and although I will see that she is HOUNDED by the press..Absolutely, they stalk her, they ambush her.. Especially when she had cancer, they would not leave her alone. But her biggest scandals have mostly been the performance where Justin Timberlake grabbed her bum, her bum in the spinning around video and the hotpants which were very famous and cancer made a lot of money for the tabloids.I think part of the reason she isn't bigger in the U.S is probably because she had to postpone the major tourdates because of breast cancer but such is life.
I know this is an old comment but I agree with you 100%. So many of my favorite singers have become political & it's so aggravating because as soon as singers open their mouth about politics, they start alienating their fans. I lost total respect for Madonna after her speech at the women's march. While I still enjoy her music (my favorite album of all time is still her Ray of Light album), I will never look at her the same way ever again. If any of us made a threat about blowing up the White House, we would have the CIA at our house & our careers would be ruined.
@@filipos2007 She sure is. It’s too bad we don’t have more entertainers like Kylie. The world would be a much better place if we had more people like Kylie
I think Kylie would be happy enough with her 2 Billboard Top 10 songs with another 2 Billboard Top 30 songs under her belt. Her British and Australian chart statistics are HUGELY impressive. 10 Australian #1 songs..... 7 British #1 songs with another 11 British #2 singles.....
@@bodzo703 The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Spice Girls, Adele, Justin Bieber, Drake, Adele, The Weeknd, One Direction, bts are all HUGE in the US and none of them are/were American. Her nationality has nothing to do with it.
She has a fan base here and now needs to do a full on proper tour of the States. Arenas. Not dinky theaters. 30 40 dates. Hollywood Bowl. Madison Square garden. San Francisco cow palace. Etc etc etc. I think she could pull it off.
Matthew, unfortunately music is like that because of business. There is a certain way it's recorded. They don't use the variety of instruments, because it costs too much. They just need someone that can play keyboards. Singers can't sing, because it is too difficult for record executives to find good talent, etc. Just let the computer fix it... :/ Puke !
[ I'm not involved in any STAN beef- she's a great artist but I felt I needed to comment. I like her stuff!]. I also left in some context, because I think it's very helpful for people to understand how she was promoted during my college years in America. She seems to be really popular overseas. I'm listening to Hand on Your Heart Right now!
Kylie fans: I have a question for you. I'm just now getting into her material. Although I remember when Can't Get You Out of My Head was popular as a kid. But my biggest question is this: why were a lot of Kylie's 90s albums not released in the US? This kinda baffles me because she has such a robust catalog. And pretty much all of her 90s albums were never released in America, but were put out in the UK and Australia and such. I know the American mainstream music industry was more geared toward a more urban or a more grunge sound. But I don't think that would've stopped Kylie from having hits in the US back then. Just curious about this, because it certainly confuses me. Because I hear some of her older songs and they would've fit in perfectly with American pop radio back then.
+Tyler Talks! She sadly wasn't popular to the right people in the US in the 90s. She tried to break into that market a few times with varied success but it wasn't until she finally worked her way out of the teenage pop thing we were used to that she garnered the attention of the US media. As you said, the grunge scene was at it's most killer in the 90s and it was also all about specific boy bands at that stage too. She really concentrated on making a name for herself in the UK and Australia at that point. It's weird how music works. :)
+Renlish Actually it wasn't after the grunge era that Kylie started making dents into disco clubs again in the late 90's. She kept a low profile in the music industry in the mid 90's and focused more on other outlets like Tv and acting. It wasn't until the late 90's with light years that she started to make a name again. She was however under Parlophone, whom at that time did not have a strong ensemble of artist that did not cater to the US market. Now they are HUGE!! That's why her music was never released until the early 2000's when synth pop was starting to break in, with Parlophone who started to take on Dj's under their belt.
the same thing happened with electronic music - it took longer for it to become mainstream and liked in the USA. Maybe US taste is a little delayed compared with the rest of the world's...
deno deno I think so too personally. Or there's a tendency for dance artists to have only one or two hits in the USA. Deee-Lite for example. I know Kylie made a small dent with her early hits In the 80s in America but they obviously didn't skyrocket her to Madonna or Janet Jackson level in America, but internationally it did. American pop music is odd lol, I've noticed the UK appreciates dance music a whollleeee lot more than America, I guess because most dance/disco artists originate from the U.K. Or in Kylie's case, Australia.
@@BroccoliBeefed Her music sound like something Madonna would make and Madonna is very sucessful in USA. Her team and record label have the fault of everything
I see a mixture of Janet Jackson and Madonna in Kylie Minogue but that's not surprising cause said multiple times she idolize both Madonna and Janet Jackson especially when it comes to being sexy and sexual in their work.
The "american starlets & celebrities" HAD NOTHING to said good ABOUT their SUPER COMPETITERESS! THE GODDESS! THE KYLIE MINOGUE (WHITE DIAMOND) (in the 21 century) - IN THE SPACE! All others lives below!
Growing up in the late 90s and 2000s in the UK I never really realised that singers might not be as popular in other countries as they were in the UK. Kylie bring a prime example, she was as big as if not bigger than Madonna in the UK, everyone adored her. But in the US 😒
why? it's the best kylie minogue commercials tv commercails like I've Got A Mountain To Climb. are not their. i think its cool where people climb over people in a city sky high a a celebration day where you climb the city
Ofcourse THE GODDES is not dangerous for the "us" starlets and their old "queen"! (What can show ME the kate perry or tailor swift? - only remakes of GODDES SHOWES) THE GODDES - FORE US - the Whole WORLD! - from Australia - -across the Universe! I SAW -alive HER show - in 2008-2011-2014! I hope - I shall see THE future NEXT ( in 2017!)
+Skylar Kylie is very talented, however Mariah does have one of the best, if not the best, voices in the industry, plus she writes AND produces all of her own music except for cover songs. A lot of Kylie's hits were given to her by other writers and producers. She's still a good singer and great performer but Mariah is more of a legend imo.
Shantee Haynes yes. I grew up on Kylie and Mariah and I just cant get down with today's artists. Some songs are good but i dont identify with them like I used to.
