He tyres were for several reasons. Accelerant yes but mainly to give the chimney one last chance to smoke before it falls. Fred didn't like all the chimneys disappearing but knew it was going to happen with him or without. So gave them one last swan song!! @simonhawksley817

The system was to cut away at the base putting pit props in to replace the brickwork, then build a bonfire using old wood and tyres to burn the props away until the chimney goes unstable and falls. And the accelerant he used was diesel oil.

I was a driver's oppo (did all the loading, feeding and lighting up fags as and when the driver wanted owt) in 78. Driver fueled up one morning with a "fag on" as we say which scared me Diesel can't light off a fag he said and put is fag out in the diesel tank. Amazing how much he knew about fire hazards without half a dozen men in suits to tell him. I, on the other hand, shit meself

To put the amount he got paid in the other video into perspective, he got paid £7000 to fell that chimney by hand in 1979, in the UK in 1981 my Dad bought our 3 bedroom semi-detached family home for £7500, my mum died 4 years ago and my dad died almost 2 years ago and I delt with their estate, that same house was valued at £150,000 as is, but it requires modernisation, which if done could bring the value up to between £180,00 and £200,000.

The later DVDs we recut. renarrated and some re-edit. There are the original broadcasts on YT from others which give a different perspective on the early TV days which are a bit more raw - the Square tower race / staircase demolition being interesting - the pit props were musically played - then drilled through before the fire to weaken them a bit as a example

Tyres burn for a long time and give off an intense heat wasn't it a running joke on the Simpsons about the tyre dump constantly being on fire ? This is an old sappers technique it was how they used to breach medieval castle walls to end sieges!

@nonnovyabizness3003
@nonnovyabizness3003 9 месяцев назад
@@pauldootson7889 Well if you want to be pedantic the word tyer was originally used to describe the band of steel around a cartwheel used to tie the rim and spokes together so the wheel was stronger ! So it would still stand that in medieval times they could have used a cart to transport and stack wood to do this then decide to chuck the cart on also ! So does that make you feel a little dumber , smart arse ? !

Tires/Tyres burn hot, but more than anything once well lit they absolutely won't go out, they'll burn like an inferno in pouring rain and a massive hurricane. It's why when huge piles of waste tires/tyres catch on fire it can literally take days, sometimes weeks, for firefighters to extinguish. Just look at the wikipedia page for "Tire Fire". I guess here Fred is using tires so the fire doesn't go out just before the supporting props burn through, in which case he'd have to go back in with more wood and other fuel at the most dangerous time (when the props are just about burnt through). An interesting example of how crazy tire fires can be is on the Wiki page; it is from 1983 when arsonists ignited seven million tires that burned for NINE MONTHS(!!) in Winchester, Virginia, polluting nearby areas with lead and arsenic.

Why the tyres? Apart from the other reasons - they were cheap, or even free. What else were they going to do with piles of old scrap tyres? I don't think that they actually got as far as paying him to get rid of them. Tyres burn. Not so much that you can ignite one on your truck with a Zippo, but given enough time, they will go. As they heat up. they give off flammable gases. There was/is a massive underground tyre dump somewhere in the US that burned for decades, may even still be going. It's more of a smoulder than a conflagration, but once going well, is next to impossible to extinguish. You don't just pour on some water.
