Hi, I've been really enjoying your show so far. Natasha, if you're into forests you have to check out the Bavarian Forest (Bayerischer Wald) which is located in the south-east of Germany. I grew up there and it's not until you move away that you realize how much you miss the forest. A large part of the area consists of a national park (not sure, but I think it's the oldest one in Germany). At the southern edge of the forest you can find the town of Passau which is just gorgeous and definitely worth a closer look. Maybe you can do an episode on one or both, that'd be great. cheers

Greetings to the USA from a "Hamburger"! Except the Hamburger (we left it to the Americans) we have a further speciality here in Hamburg: "Labskaus". That is a mixture of everything the cook on a ship could find in his kitchen: potatos, onions, beetroot, corned beef, mixed pickles and herring with a fried egg on top. It sounds weird, looks like a run-over cat and tastes SO GOOD! I love it on toast. ❤

if you want to see some FKK footage, there is enough current and ancient footage onm the internet ;) There are even documentaries about the german nudist movement. In the city where I live there is a WWII bomb found almost every two weeks. There are gas stations like every 50km on the autobahn. So running out of fuel is definitely considered your fault. And when you have an emergency stop on that dangerous road, because of no gas, you pay for it to create a possibly dangerous situation. You will not get punished for an attempt to break out of prison, but all the crimes you do while escaping are punishable. So if you manage to break out wothout breaking anything ot hurting anybody you will not get punished for it. Being free is considered a basic human instinct and therefore you will not be punished for trying to be free. Of course they will try to catch you and put you back into prison.

The hyper inflation after ww one in Germany caused between half a mill and eight hundred thousand deaths from starvation. It was the root cause of ww two allowing a certain populist to manipulate the population, much as so many populist leaders are attempting to across the world in the present day which is why things are so terrifying in politics today.

Prisoners in Germany are still hunted by the Police, and if they are caught, they go back to prison to serve the rest of their sentences.Not punishable means only, that they do not get aditional charges for the escape itself.But if they damage property, hurt people, steal or commit any other crime in the process, they are charged with these.

This Hasselhoff story is a running joke. I would say that most Germans under 45 don't even know who Hasselhoff is. It's true, he had some successful songs in the '90s. At the time, he was a big TV star thanks to “Night Rider” and “Baywatch.”

Fun Fact that I learned recently. Grape-flavoured everything is mostly a thing in the US, because currants have been banned there for a long period of time (1911 to 1966) due to a plant disease that threatened the American white pine. Therefore currant-flavouring was replaced by grape-flavouring. In Germany, currant-flavouring is much more present than grape (probably because we prefer to make wine out of grapes) 😄

This applies, for example, if the gate is open and the prisoner simply marches out. If he commits a crime to escape, e.g. hostage-taking, then he must also serve an extra sentence if he is caught again. The background to this is the stipulation that the desire for freedom is a basic right of every human being and measures to achieve freedom must therefore not be punished unless the measures involve a crime.

80) Missing the fun fact that the blue color of the seats in the Bundestag is copyrighted. You are not allowed to use the same shade of blue at any other place. 83) The hare was a symbol of fertility as were the eggs, and some jerk put both together. Additionally eating eggs during the Lent before Easter was not allowed to Catholics, and so they had to boil any eggs laid prematurely by hens before Easter (and which could not be hidden in egg noodles or similar) to make them lasting till then. 84 ) Actually the christmas tree tradition originated in the Alsace which is rather "on-and-off" German, as well as the idea to replace some of the apples hung in the tree to be eaten by the children with glass bubbles. It was then spread through the Baltics, which were at that time heavily influenced by German traders and Teutonic knights from Prussia. 89) The Spreuerhofstrasse in Reutlingen is an alley which is only 50 meters long. At its northern end it furcates around three houses attached to another, and it is the smaller of this forks which is only between 31 and 50 centimeters wide. It was built in 1727 during reconstruction efforts after a massive citywide fire and registered as city track No. 77. 90) Not to forget the village Killer in the Killer valley. But the German verb "wanken" means rather "to sway" and is related to "winken" - to wave. 94) Actually there are different systems in place in Germany. The most logical is imho that in the Southwest: 8:15 is a quarter (of) nine, 8:30 is half (of) nine, 8:45 is three quarters (of) nine. You should always look forward, not backward. 99) That copyright dispute is solved now. 100) Sorry for his efforts, but that word is only a joke. It was made up and did never really exist, because the thing it describes never existed. The model for it was presumably the (Austrian) Donaudampfschiffahrtsgesellschaftskapitän, a ship captain within the Erste Donau-Dampfschiffahrts-Gesellschaft (DDSG, First Danube Steamboat Company, existing 1829 to 1991 in Austria). The actually longest word was Rindfleischetikettierungsüberwachungsaufgabenübertragungsgesetz (try it again with this!) and was the official "short form" title for the "Gesetz zur Übertragung der Aufgaben für die Überwachung der Rinderkennzeichnung und Rindfleischetikettierung" (Cattle marking and beef labeling supervision duties delegation law) in the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern from 1999 to 2013. (As the law was proposed in state parliament, the members reacted with loud laughter.) Another 'short form' law title was Grundstücksverkehrsgenehmigungszuständigkeitsübertragungsverordnung (long title: Verordnung zur Übertragung der Zuständigkeiten des Oberfinanzpräsidenten der Oberfinanzdirektion Berlin nach § 8 Satz 2 der Grundstücksverkehrsordnung auf das Bundesamt zur Regelung offener Vermögensfragen, GrundVZÜV), roughly Regulation on the delegation of authority concerning land conveyance permissions), a decree (=Verordnung) established 2003 and repealed 2007. Only 'short' law titles do become occasionally so long in German - I suppose there is some secret competition in law-makers offices regarding long short titles for very minor regulations.
@HenryLoenwind
@HenryLoenwind Месяц назад
Re 100: To clarify, that word exists, but the whole "Donaudampfschiffahrtsgesellschaftskapitän..." group of words are the result of a word game. You start with "Donaudampfschiffahrtsgesellschaftskapitän" and then add on more words until it gets ridiculous. One could play the same game in English by adding more words in the front with "of" or "for". For example: Polishing wax for the wardrobe for the hat of the captain of the Danube steamship company. Storage cupboard for the polishing wax for the wardrobe for the hat of the captain of the Danube steamship company. Manufacturing company for the storage cupboard for the polishing wax for the wardrobe for the hat of the captain of the Danube steamship company... Naturally, this is more fun with the German way of compounding nouns. Re 94: At 3'15, the first 3 hours and a quarter of the fourth hour have passed. So it's a quarter (of) four.

The word "Deutsch" (older form "Teutsch") comes from the old high german "thiutisk" (germanic "þeudisk") and originally meant "part of the people" or just "people / folk". So "Deutschland" means "Land of the (germanic) people". Also here is another interesting video about Germany, german history and it's contributions to the world. It's a little bit dry, but still very interesting and informative. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-AxKpoA23YWc.html

The Bavarian Purity Law, known as the “Reinheitsgebot” in German, is a historic regulation concerning the production of beer in Germany. It was first enacted in 1516 by Duke Wilhelm IV of Bavaria. The law states that only three ingredients can be used in the brewing of beer: water, barley, and hops1. The original text did not mention yeast, as a full understanding of its role in fermentation came later1. The purpose of this law was to ensure the quality of beer, prevent price competition with bakers for wheat and rye, and to conserve cereals for bread. Over time, it became a standard not just in Bavaria but throughout Germany, and it has influenced beer production and regulation around the world2. Today, the Reinheitsgebot is often cited as a mark of quality for German beers, and while modern regulations have evolved, the spirit of the law remains a symbol of brewing excellence. Don’t think they changed it

Yes, David Hasselhoff is very popular in Germany. When Germany got reunited he was singing his song "Looking for Freedom" and got into the Germans hearts. The naked thing in Germany is called FKK (FreiKörperKultur - FreeBodyCulture) and just normal, especically for people from East Germany. Would love to get the grape Fanta!!! We only can get the regular ones and sometimes the special editions. That's right. Anyone who breaks out of a prison or institution on their own is not directly punishable. There are therefore no criminal penalties after being caught again. About the beer, we have the "Reinheitsgebot" and the law stipulates that only water, malt, hops, and yeast may be used to brew beer in accordance with the Purity Law. Yes, you can get beer at McDonald's in Germany 👍 No.100; yes, that is a German word. We love compound words.

There is another fun fact about Angela Merkel. Due to her longstanding reign as chancellor especially younger pupils when firstly educated about democracy and our government are said to ask if males are even allowed to become chancellor. A friend of mine, early middle school teacher told that one at a BBQ. Don't know if that is embarrassing but I found it pretty funny. And in light of our newest addition to chancellory, I might put out the motion of removing the equality rule on that instance.

A little background info on the different names: In the old ages they were a lot of different tribes active on the area that is now Germany. The neiboring countries simply used the name of the tribe (or the name they gave them) they had first contact with as the one for all. That was with the romans the Germans, some met the Saxons first, others had contact with the Friesen, Tyske, Alemannen, etc. The name Deutschland came first with King Barbarossa's declaration (at least I think it was him) "Heiliges Römisches Reich Deutscher Nation" (holy roman empire of a german nation). He had a little dispute with the pope and used the name to tell him to shut up.

Your reaction is cool and it is fun to watch the world learning about the country I grew up and live in. In 1923 the market price for bread spiralled, reaching 700 Reichsmarks (January) 1200 (May) 100,000 (July) 2 million (September) 670 million (October) and then 80 billion Reichsmarks (November).

27:10 They have not changed anything noteable. Actually there is a German decree called "Reinheitsgebot" (purity commandment) which clearly dictates which ingredients are allowed to be used to make beer. Those being water, barley, hops and eventually yeast. That's it. Anything more is not called beer anymore, but rather a beer mixture.

By the way: in addition to the Black Forest, there is also the "Spreewald", a forest area in the water, with canals where you can paddle in rowing boats and there are small inhabited places whose streets are made of water like Venice. Unfortunately, many regions are hardly covered by YT (see above), just as there is hardly any reporting on the North Frisian Islands in the North Sea or islands in the Baltic Sea.
