FYI BBQ began in the Caribbean But what about BBQ, well BBQ as we know it that is meat cooked over a grill or pit, covered in spices and basting sauce originated in the Caribbean. The word barbecue comes from the language of a Caribbean Indian tribe called the Taino.
BBQ has been around long before the US even existed. So... neither. Iced Tea and Lemonade is called an Arnold Palmer. Unless it's something different with southern sweet tea.
History lesson ahead. The British were close to stranded on their home island during WWII with Nazi U-boats sinking anything that floats. Britain was importing 70% of its food the year the war started. Their government instituted Rationing on materials and food to make sure they could keep fighting. The rationing lasted from 1940 to 1954. Post war Europe was destroyed and took into the 1960's to look OK. The rationing seems to have deleted the tastebuds from the population. It also explains why most of their comfort foods are also poverty foods.
Technically the Native Americans were already BBQing, they were already slow cooking meat before the Europeans came over. German and Czech immigrants taught Texans to BBQ in the Mid-19th Century.
