If you ever come to Finland, you need to really select the season. Camping in a van with free roaming possibilities (because of jokamiehenoikeus) is for those who want to enjoy the summer. These more expensive trips during the winter are obviously worthy also, should one have the money for it, but there are also privately rented accommodation in Finland..-

Hi Natasha and Debbie, and greetings from Finland! 🇫🇮 There are many good videos about Finland, but if you want to get a better picture of Finland, I highly recommend watching the video "Jean Sibelius - Finlandia", uploaded by Tarja M. That video sums up quite well Finland's nature and athmosphere, while the "Finlandia" symphony, composed by the Finnish national composer Jean Sibelius (1865-1957), plays in the background. 😉

Finland is amazing. The scenery, the people, the reindeer, the forests, the snow...very magical. We went to Saariselka and absolutely loved it. We did the snowmobiles, the reindeer sleighride, the dog sledging, skiing, hill sledging and toboggan, snowbuggies, and we met Father Christmas. We had only four hours a daylight each day. But it was so surreal. We honestly didn't want to go back home to England!

Hey, a Finn here!🇫🇮 I live in the middle of Finland on the coast of the Baltic Sea. The first snow of the winter came here in late October and now there are mountains of snow everywhere. Last year the snow didn't leave until early May.😅 The temperature here is below -10°C all day, and it has been cloudy for weeks on the count of all the snow. The nice side to all this is a beautiful white Christmas😍 Even though I live on the lower half of Finland, I have seen the aurora borealis about three times this winter already. It is the most beautiful thing ever. One night the sky was almost entirely green! I got some amazing photos those days.

As a family we went to Lapland about 17/18 years ago when our boys were about 7and 5 years old. We stayed in a cosy log cabin, went on husky rides and skidoos. We also had a ride at night on a sleigh pulled by reindeer through the forests with the northern lights above. We were there for four nights five days it was just magical, I especially remember the light it felt so different from the UK light., Every day we would be in a group going to different places, doing different activities looking for Santa, his workshop, walking through the forest on snow shoes, sledging etc, many of Santa's elves were helping us find him. I can't remember their names now but I bet my two sons could name them though they are in their 20s now. At the time we didn't have a lot of money but we saved up to go, we could have spent money on a new kitchen etc friends and family would say why waste your money, to us it wasn't a waste we have the memories. Each Christmas we play the video of us there, get the pictures out and just remember our special time in Lapland 🎅⛄

The sceneries of Finnish Lapland feel magical and otherwordly for most of us Finns too, because the most people live in the southern parts of the country. The sceneries in the south differ a lot from those in Lapland. Its like stepping into another realm.

I live in the northernmost place in Finland, Called Utsjoki. It is in Norway border. Currently we have polar night thats lasts about 2months. In the summer sun wont set 2.5 months. I can see northernh lights from my living room, pretty much every night when the sky is clear. Utsjoki is the most beautiful place in Finland ❤ Life is a bit challenging ar times, since we dont have much services. For example nearest hospital is 500 km away, atm and pharmacy 170km etc. But I love it here 😊

@ArchieArpeggio
@ArchieArpeggio 9 месяцев назад
Well that is cold even for the Finns. My home city is about 300km south from the border of Lapland and over 400km away from the arctic circle. I remember that coldest day at my region has been -42C and some times as warmer winters coldest days have been only between -20C and -35C. Now i live in Tampere where and from here it´s about 700-750km (by road) to go to arctic area and still here were extremely cold at that 2018 winter. Some days/nights were over -30C here too and i can say that it is unusual.

I had the opportunity to visit southern Finland many years ago. I took the opportunity thinking that I would never go there again. After the conference, I took the overnight sleeper train to Rovaniemi in Lapland also thinking that I would never have the chance again. I went to the Arctic Circle where the Sant Clause village was. This was mid-summer and the temperature was 35C (95F) but with low humidity, it felt just like a nice sunny day. Got the overnight sleeper back to Helsinki and spent a week there. I have been back to Finland and have also been to Tallinn Estonia mentioned in the video.

Hello from Finland. Fun fact: the "Helsinki" airport is not called that. It is actually Helsinki-Vantaa airport and is located in Vantaa. City next to Helsinki. There are no active commercial flights straight into Helsinki. But it takes you a maximum of 30 min by train to get to the capital. If you ever go to Finland in winter just remember to learn how to dress up and you will be fine.

I lived 3 years below arctic circle when studying in business college there. Those were cold years, but those did give a lot. Environment, even in cities up there has something special. Even to me who was born less than 200km south from arctic circle in Finland. So almost "from Lapland". All feels good and fun until you woke up at morning (school morning, tests ahead, cannot skip) and outside temp is stuck to -45'c... Multi-layer clothing was and is a must up there on winter. Also protecting face, especially lips - as lower heat, there is lower moisture content, and going below -30 it is bone dry and suck all moisture from lips in a instant. And due that same, dry air doesn't fell so cold, but it is deadly cold. :) I'm no longer living up there, currently in southern part of Finland, but somehow Lapland and it's wilderness still calls back time to time... To have more comedic view about Finland, look for "Geography Now! Finland". It is a bit old, and somethings have been changed since.

Lapland spans Norway, Sweden, Finland and also Russia.. Mind you, once you have seen some snow, you have seen it all.. ;) I'm Swedish but live in the UK.. we lived in Sweden for the first 15 odd years obeing marirried and one year we went to Malmo in he south of Sweden, it was winter and the sea was frozen, so we took a stroll on the sea, as you do. Had it not been for the icebreakers keeping the shipping lanes open, we could have walked across the sea over to Denmark.. so yes, this was in the SOUTH of Sweden, it wasn't even up north, as in this video.. :)

I live in Rovaniemi, and it's fun to watch how "exotic" my hometown is for so many. Well, this touristy side of Lapland is quite different than what my life here is, but I do understand why people want to do so much during their short visit here. Thankfully, Lapland is alot more than just those tourist traps, clean nature and silence everywhere, wouldn't want to live my life anywhere else. Thank you for your funny and positive videos, cheering me up every time. 😊👍

I've not been, but I'd love to go. One thing not covered is the Lapps themselves, or as they call themselves, the Sami. They were persecuted in the past, but have their own distinctive culture and languages. Most of Europe ( along with Iran and Northern India) speak languages which are members of the Indo-European language family. But Finnish, Estonian, and the Sami languages belong to the Uralian language family, so the words seem very different.

When the sea freezes to ice, we make ice roads to drive on. For some people, ice roads can shorten their drive to the city from 40mins to 10mins. You can find cars on deserted islands all over archipelago. Back in the days, people drive over the ice to Sweden.

Cold and snow here in lower middle Sweden... But looks like at least 0C to +5C during Christmas. It's becoming rather rare in last 10 years or so to have proper snow here where I live during Christmas. Usually get a whole bunch of snow in November, then again in January/February. But uncommon with snow over the Christmas/New Years holidays. Further north is of course a completely different story. And not that much farther north either!

The Northern Lights have been visible in many parts of Britain in recent days. This is all very pretty, but the cold, no thank you. Its OK for Christmas cards. It all looks attractive to experience, for a short time. Reindeer are the same as North American Caribou , as European Elk are Moose in America. My adoptive father spent some time in Helsinki, while serving on a minesweeper, clearing the sea of German mines. He was always telling us how beautiful it was & how much he enjoyed it. I have never got to go & see for myself, but I do believe it.

11:37 personally ive never went on the ice cruiser, but i have walked on the sea and also big lakes, infact being dragged in a pulkka (sled?) by my parents on a frozen lake was something we did several times every winter when i was young :)

Nice video. I liked your humorous touch! I say the same thing to you that I say to all foreigners planning to visit Finland. If you come in winter, then go to Lapland because it's the winter wonderland. Don't get stuck in Rovaniemi, but go and see other places too. If you come in summer, then choose southern Finland, but don't get stuck in Helsinki. It's a good idea to have a "base camp" in Helsinki and after exploring it eg. get a train to Turku and Tampere and a bus to Porvoo too. It's also easy and cheap to take a daytrip to Tallinn Estonia like in that video.

I have visited Lapland many times (used to manage an airline who did special Santa flights up there in December) and Rovaniemi is the most commercialised of the 'Santa Villages' and my favourite was always Enontekio, which is a total wonderland. Levi & Ivalo are also a good visit. Driving though the forests you see all the snow draped trees, reindeers and virtually no-one else !! Beautiful.

That ice is probably sufficient to carry modern tanks. Pretty sure in parts they just "built" roads over the ice before ice breakers became available. Ice bathing is of course not much of an issue, you just need to get acclimated to it.

I read online that the north of the Arctic Circle has the most daylight hours during the year, if cloudiness is not taken into account.

Lapland tourism is still recovering from Covid, but before all that the small provincial airport of Rovaniemi got crazy busy every winter with charter flights. Some 30 years ago there were even charter flights from the UK to Rovaniemi on the Concorde, I kid you not. I don't think they flew supersonic on those flights, though.

It looks stunning. Natasha I have to disagree that you don’t suit hats, you pulled off the Santa hat perfectly.
