So very glad you put this up, needed my fix of both of you, but also needed a laugh, and nothing better than intelligent comedy, and when it comes to Ronnie Barker and Ronnie Corbett nothing can beat them, I honestly don't think there's a sketch they did in 12 seasons of their show that doesn't hit the mark. Thank You ✌

19:20 Oxo (ox-oh) is a cube-sized stock of dried gravy; you put it in your stew, etc, to enhance the flavour. It’s one of our oldest companies, beginning around 1866 and you can still buy it in shops today. In this case he mentioned a cross-your heart bra. The cross is the X, and the O’s are the nipples, so he’s saying it looks like O-X-O.

Fun fact. Ronnie Barker, (the bigger of the two guys) wrote many of these sketches under the pen name of Gerald Wylie. No one on the show even knew it was him, only his agent knew. The game was up when everyone on the show insisted on meeting Gerald to thank him, and of course it turned out to be Ronnie Barker. The pairing of The Ronnies worked so well because of their unique set-up. Ronnie Barker was an actor who could do comedy. Ronnie Corbett was a comedian who could act. All the other double-acts in that golden age of comedy were made up of two comedians. The acting aspect gave the Two Ronnies something extra.

I remember these sketches brand new, when I was a kid, and it's so nice to see other people watching and laughing at them for the first time. I feel that, these days here in the UK, the current generation is missing this; Two Ronnies were on at prime time on Saturday early evening, and pretty much every family would sit down and laugh. These days BBC puts up re-runs, yesterday's being an episode of Dad's Army. Fine vintage stuff indeed, but the trouble is that in most families, the parents have already seen this stuff several times over. The nice thing back in the old days was that episodes of, say, the Two Ronnies were new for everyone; watching it was a real family event to be looked forward to.

Thanks. I'm pleased you enjoyed these old favourites. They were immensely popular during the 70s and 80s, both in the UK and in Australia. In the UK alone, their weekly series reached peak audiences of up to 19 million - which was then about 45 percent of all people having television. There were 12 series in all, plus lots of individual programmes, such as Christmas specials, totalling about 100 shows. Barker, in particular, did lots of other work, notably Open All Hours, and Porridge (both successful comedy series), but interestingly he had originally been a legitimate stage actor. He died in 2005, I think. Corbett died about five years ago. Both were awarded CBE by the late Queen, for their contributions to entertainment and for their charity work.

Ronnie Barker used to submit sketches to the show under the pen name Gerald Wiley. He invented Gerald as a pseudonym to avoid prejudice in judging his writing, commissioning sketches because they were genuinely funny rather than just because he was the star of the show. The two big names other than Barker & Corbett of the 1970's were Morecambe & Wise and they parodied Mastermind too with the added bonus that the role of quiz master was played by the (then) real host of Mastermind, Magnus Magnusson.

Many of the Two Ronnies' wordplay-based sketches were written by Ronnie Barker (who submitted them to the show's scriptwriters under an alias so as not to get unfair treatment!). His skills at saying a rapid list of nonsense deadpan are legendary. A typical show would include a handful of sketches, a Ronnie Corbett shaggy dog story, and a "in the news" section with a series of puns and one liners, and a big musical parody. Classic comedy.

I'm afraid I never found M & W funny but loved Victoria Wood. Another two funny songs that she did were "Pam" and "Political Correctness", less well known than Barry and Freda but equally hilarious.

With the added touch of surreal genius that came from being co-created by Spike Milligan, who between The Goon Show and his Q series, can be seen as the spiritual predecessor to Monty Python.

Girls, loved your reaction. The British love their humour, so it would be great if you did more. There are so many silly, good, clean, comedy genius series, such as ‘ello ‘ello, Dad’s Army, Black Adder, Faulty Towers, Father Ted; to name just 5. We’d all love a trip down memory lane.

Victoria wood. Let’s do it is a great start, she took the Michael out of British housewife’s (the bored kind) in the 90s. Benny hill was a visual genius who went worldwide with his seaside inoffensive smutty humour. Both classics. Best wishes from the UK 😘

The Mastermind sketch was written by a chap called David Renwick. He went on to write a brilliant sitcom called One Foot in the Grave. There’s a few clips of that on You Tube. Doing a search on “Victor on the phone” should give you a classic clip. Victor (Meldrew) is the main character in the show - a grumpy old man who speaks for us all!
@weedle30

I am surprised that “one foot..” gets overlooked when ‘we’ mention British comedy shows to the American reactors 😕🥺- it’s the same with Reggie Perrin! “One foot” was just a genius comedy programme and Richard Wilson as Victor Meldrew was just supreme with his acting and comedic timing (as was the rest of the cast) and the same with Leonard Rossiter as Reggie ….. I never tire of watching those two characters - thank goodness for box sets! 😄
