In the 1930’s during the Great Depression, people would move to other areas of the country looking for work and they would be called “carpet baggers”, referring to a type of suitcase popular at the time. The term came to represent a politician who represents a state they don’t really have a connection to. Like they bought a house there and ran for office but are from another state and don’t really have deep ties to the area.
13:33 Not a racist thing. A carpet bagger is a political candidate who seeks election in an area where they have no local connections. (in the US) a person from the northern states who went to the South after the Civil War to profit from the Reconstruction; a person perceived as an unscrupulous opportunist.
Yeah Roger and Stan tend to be the best characters at least based on entertainment value (acceptable background noise huh, I won't deny it still seems a tad harsh)
I’m not sure if there’s any recent usage of the term carpetbagger, but it originally was used to refer to politicians who moved from the northern states/New England/etc to the south after the American civil war to take advantage of opportunities in localities that they had no personal ties to- it’s a derogatory term, though I don’t believe there are racial connotations- I know I learned about it in history class, but that was ages ago, so I looked it up to refresh my memory lol
