He figuratively said "once in awhile lets stop giving all these big time actors/directors/writers/producers all this money for a big budget movies and give the next generation a chance". Such a brilliant and genuine well said speech
@brandonhammond3413
@brandonhammond3413 Месяц назад
Uh, well, he said it pretty literally. You can have big time actors/directors/writers and producers. American Fiction has big time actors in it. So don’t think he’s taking a shot at actors at all. And, most often actors’ salaries in those films he’s talking about that cost $200mil to make are just a fraction of that budget. He figuratively means, instead of taking “risks” on tent pole films (e., g., Marvel, Star Wars, et al) that costs $200mil+ to make - take risks on smaller budget films in the $4-$10mil range. Yes, that includes the next generation of filmmakers and actors, etc. but it can include this generation as well. Think outside the box bc there are great, compelling stories to be told/made that don’t cost $200mil to make.

Regarding Black Creatives who've won in this category, this is probably one of my favorite speeches /win of all time. Let me break it down: Geoffrey Fletcher becomes the 1st Black person to win Best Adapted Screenplay for the film Precious John Ridley wins for 12 years of slave Terell and Barry Jenkins win for Moonlight Jordan Peele becomes the 1st Black person to win Original Screenplay for GET OUT Spike Lee FINALLY wins for Black Klansman All of these past winners were deserving of the award. I'm just glad the storyline was different this time American Fiction isn’t about slavery, Post Civil rights ERA, Jim Crow, poverty, or black youth trauma The closet link is to GET OUT. Mainly because they are both satires. I think what makes American Fiction even more special is that it focuses on a regular Black family. While also asking the question, why aren't there more diverse storytelling of Black life in general.
@KOHF34
@KOHF34 5 месяцев назад
I remember watching the film about a week ago and thinking, “This is one of the best-written films I have seen in ages.” It’s rare that you see movies these days where you think that to yourself. American Fiction presents a message that is very understandable, and doesn’t necessarily beat you over the head with it.

Interesting perspective. I didn't find the family drama or romance contrived at all. To me, what he said about wanting more lower budget films to give more people opportunities to work was immediately contradicted by the names that he listed after. Scorsese, Gerwig, Nolan were collectively there for only 3 movies that had a cumulative budget of 400+ million dollars. So what exactly is Cord Jefferson calling for? More filmmakers to become elite exceptions that make movies with budgets over 100 mill?
@litlcatfeet
@litlcatfeet 5 месяцев назад
I don’t see it as a contradiction. He’s saying make more movies thereby giving more filmmakers opportunities. Greta Gerwig’s directorial debut was the $10 million Lady Bird. Nolan’s breakout movie was the $9 million Memento. I assume Scorcese’s debut was low budget too. Cord Jefferson didn’t have a lot of time for nuance up on the stage, but I doubt he meant those directors’ most recent movies shouldn’t have been made. But I think we can all think of terrible movies with bloated budgets that aren’t furthering filmmaking as an art and also ended up not making money either. Anyway, my two cents!
@jtali6122
@jtali6122 5 месяцев назад
@@litlcatfeet I mean... it's not really Hollywood's main goal to give new filmmakers opportunities, that would be the Sundance Institute's goal. Hollywood is about making money. Big budget films usually yield BIG box office numbers. Do I personally want more indie and arthouse films? Yes! But that's just not the reality of the focus. And it was definitely a contradiction. You cannot call for an industry redistribution of funds, then exalt the select few hoarding all the funds for their 3 movies. Of course the 3 he named started small. Everyone starts small. Where they are now, however, is a part of the problem he's speaking about. Cord needs to pick a side. Ava Duvernay, who was also in the Oscars audience that night, just raised funds INDEPENDENTLY for Origin. Why not shout her out from the stage? Oh, bc maybe....more people being like her is the ACTUAL solution. She's solution focused. Cord was also complaining in the press room after the win about not having a range of Black stories told in Hollywood. My tip to him: "Be like Ava and stop idolizing the white elite exceptions."

One of the 2024 Oscar Misfires. Oppenheimer should have had this hands-down. The film's structure, perspective, and complexity perfectly match the source material's "cross-examinational" quality as it delves into the paradoxical figure that was J. Robert Oppenheimer. And considering it does all this with arguably some of the most important subject matter on Earth - that of cautionary tale of the ability of scientists to create existential risk to destroy mankind - is one of utmost importance. Seriously - civil rights, feminism, even the Holocaust - none of these are even remotely close to the importance of alleviating existential risks to mankind - Climate Change, Nuclear War, and Artificial Intelligence. Thankfully Oppenheimer won many others, but it truly deserved all the awards of the night. It's a masterpiece.
