Fun fact: KFC in Canada didn't have mashed potatoes or biscuits. You'd get: Chicken, fries, coleslaw and gravy. What's the gravy for? The chicken? Don't be silly! Of course not! The gravy is for the fries of course!! America: But.... but.. but... gravy on fries?! Won't that taste horrible with the ketchup on the fries?!? Me in the States: Can I get some vinegar? America: Vinegar?! What for? Are you having a salad? What kind of vinegar are you looking for?' Me: Just normal vinegar for my salt & vinegar fries. America: Wut?!?!?!

Any Canadian in the 70's & 80's on the ski hill/slopes/resorts, the cafeteria always had Fries with the option of gravey, then would squirt ketchup on top. teen favorite to warm up with at lunch before heading onto slopes for afternoon.

Vachon is the Canadian equivalent of Little Debbie. Their array of products is pretty much the same types of snack cakes. I've never had a Little Debbie Product in my 66 years. I expect you don't have Vachon products in America.

Speaking as an American who is now Canadian, Vachon was always better than Little Debbie, IMO. I'm pretty sure that the Canadian requirement for packaging to be in French presents a barrier to some companies. The market share may not be worth the cost.
@personincognito3989
@personincognito3989 3 месяца назад
I don't understand your comments at all. We get products from overseas to Canada that are written in 2 languages all the time. Not just French.They'll be Chinese writing on something.Or turkish writing et cetera. I cannot see that that would be a problem whatsoever, they just sent set the printer to print the wrappers the same way they would with any other wrappers. I just spent some time in Europe and some of their products have more than 2 languages on them.This is actually a worldwide thing. But maybe because you're american you don't realize that because your stuff is just printed in one language?
@LindaM2005
@LindaM2005 3 месяца назад
@@personincognito3989 First of all, I'm Canadian, no longer American. Second, companies routinely make the decision that they won't pull a large enough market share to commit the resources to adapt their packaging for one specific market. Perhaps studying elementary economics might help you understand.
@mw-wl2hm
@mw-wl2hm 3 месяца назад
It's not about language it's about competition (which you touched on in the reply). Regardless, Vachon IS superior (not just my opinion but seems to be the consensus among a lot of first-time taste tasters.). Canada has stricter food rules so while packaged food is not healthy for anyone to consume I'd rather take my chances with what is allowed in ours..lol
@ktkat1949

You are absolutely right. That is why so many American products don't make it to Canada. The French/English thing is too much for them to comprehend.
@ktkat1949
@ktkat1949 3 месяца назад
@@personincognito3989 The answer to your question is in your comment. 'we get products from overseas' Europe and Asia are used to providing information in several languages and do so routinely. USA companies can't be bothered for what they figure is a small market. A lot of what Americans love are nonstarters in Canada.

They can carry guns but the US is the only place to ban kinder surprise for safety issues. I agree with everything you said - particularly the last one.. Hershey is gross. According to Europeans our version of their chocolate (Cadbury) isn't as good as theirs but I think we can all agree none is as bad as American - I think the lax food rules is why they say 'candy bar' and not chocolate bar.

That's really a rude way to describe American chocolate. You know that there are some Americans who read these comments & that is not a kind descriptor for them to read about something that is theirs' & dear to their hearts. I live in downtown Toronto: We had Little Debbie cakes at the closest grocery store. I prefer Vachon. I've seen Uncrustables recently. We used to have A&W Cream Soda. I remember Bugles. I'm surprised that they stopped. ---------------- Why I think products were discontinued being shipped to Canada in 2022. 1/ At the tail end of the worst of Covid, there was a massive disruption in shipping around the world which also affected the Canadian/American border. 2/ There is an additional expense in making Canadian vs American packaging. 3/ None of these products were wildly popular in Canada, meaning they weren't pulling in much profit to begin with. This combination means that these products weren't making enough money to be worthwhile.

2 must be a big one. Having to have dual-language English/French packaging on anything sold in Canada has got to be a pain to US companies. And they can't use the same packaging in the US because Spanish is more common here than French and Spanish-speaking people would protest.
@justinelynch3175
@justinelynch3175 3 месяца назад
There is a huge investment required for US-manufacturers to sell products in Canada due to our language laws. You can't just take the product you're selling in the US, import it and sell it. You need to create a second version of packaging with separate production runs and distribution, for a market that is 1/10 the size of your current one.

I will tell you a little tale about how US companies try to enter the Canadian market without a clue about the market. This is true. In the 70s Hershey Chocolate decided to move their bars into Canada. So they shipped them up here in their dark brown wrappers and American chocolate. They failed miserably. They had to hire a Canadian marketing firm to tell them what had gone wrong. Any Canadian could have told them that Canadians preferred milk chocolate (that was then not now when people want 80% or whatever dark chocolate) I think that is a hangover from British chocolate which is a lot better than any in North America) They also were totally turned off by the dark brown wrappers. Canadians preferred light colourful wrappers. So they had to create a shiny gold and white wrapper for their bars and also changed the formula of their chocolate to make a dent in the Canadian market. After a few years, they went back to a darker wrapper but the chocolate is still different. Same with Starbucks. They thought coffee was coffee. Not in Canada. We hated the really dark burnt taste of Starbucks coffee so they had to come with True North blend which is a blonde type of coffee. BTW a lot of Starbucks are closing in Canada. They can't compete with Tim Hortons, and Starbucks are unionized in Canada, making it unprofitable for the franchises, so they are shutting their doors. US businesses think that the Canadian market is just the same as the USA one. It's not and they find out to their peril.

I'm Canadian.. and never ever had Little Debbie's cakes. I was raised on Vachon.. and all of their snacks.. so I can't see Little Debbie's being better than our own choices anyways. So I can't imagine there's a huge demand here for Little Debbie's. Just my point of view.. and yeah I could be wrong.. but I don't feel like I am. 🤔 I have seen Uncrustables in Walmart here.. so I think we have them now. Canada Dry makes Cream Soda here.. and we have always had Cream Soda in Canada one way or another. I really miss seeing Tahiti Treat by Canada Dry but it was sold and only available in certain Canadian markets.. but I grab it when I see it!. Oh and we have always had Bugles chips too.. but I am not sure we have the variety of different flavours... but maybe they have discontinued them here.. as I haven't bought them recently.. so haven't noticed actually. We had Bagel Bites here for yearssssssssss... and if we had the same brand .. then I am sure you can get them in other brands here still.. so it's no big deal. We have pizza tot bite thingies here... as I have seen them in all the grocery stores. Trust me we aren't feeling any hardships with American snack goods. We are actually inundated with American snacks and more choices than we need most likely!!! 🤣🙃😉 Cheers from Ontario, Canada 🍁

One of my favourite childhood memories was as a teenager, being a counsellor at a camp. On the weekends, we would take our tiny weekly stipend and go into town and visit the local A&W. I would order a meal with a cream soda in a frosted glass from the freezer. The cream soda ended up with a crust of ice on the top from the chill of the mug. It was sooooo good. Then they got rid of cream soda and swapped to a root beer that tasted a lot worse than the previous flavour. Oh well, at least they now have a Doggie Burger.

As a 30 odd year old Canadian. Can't think I've ever seen Little Debbie products, maybe they never sold them to the grocery stores I visited. Seen commercials for uncrustables but they never interested me. personally, Peanut Butter exist. Jam/Jelly exist. and bread exist. Not that hard to make a PB&J sandwich. A&W Cream Soda? Never heard of it. also, 1.5 litres? that is a weird volume to sell things at. I remember Bugles. though, honestly, I have always been more of the other brands like Doritos (Jalapeno Cheddar), Lays, Old Dutch, Ms. Vickies to name a few I again remember Bagel Bites. But, I also remember them being very expensive for a package. they were good, but again, I'm not missing them too much.

I've tried the ones that were at one point available in Canada and I don't remember really liking any of them. I think the only one I never did was the Bagel Bites. The one that I really miss is the Ragu pasta sauce. I've been having a hell of a time finding a replacement that I like instead of just can tolerate

I can't say I've ever seen a little Debbie here - the snack cakes in the stores in my province are all Vachon. Little Debbie were probably only sold in a few markets and never gained wider traction, but I do remember Bugles. Twinkies are also not something I see a lot of - the first time I had them was in uni when someone brought a box back from the US. The guy who brought them, cut them into small pieces and our group each had a small piece. From what I recall, nobody particularly enjoyed their twinkie - I thought it was one of the most vile things I've tasted - maybe it's something you need to grow up with to like?

2:00 In Giant Tiger's store in Québec they have these. But honestly I always found LD snacks tasted cheap! Vachon's cake and Dare and Christie's cookies are way better. 8:31 How come? There's 900 A&W locations in the U.S 9:55 Bugles are available in Dollorama stores and many more like IGA, Métro. 15:55 These are also available in Québec's grocery stores.

I am a full blood Canadian, born and raised. I have never seen a "Little Debbie" anything here in Canada. I can tell you how we survive: we have better, less sugary, less fatty confections. For example: Old Dutch Ketchup (not katsup) chips, smarties which are not the same as your smarties, which we call rockets. Our smarties are similar to M&Ms, but better

I don't know where that website seems to get that information, but it seems to be outdated. It's possible the contract was renewed via a different distributor. In one of the grocery stores here, it's in the same corner as all the Vachon products. Including Twinkies.

Thanks a lot... I had no idea we couldn't get Bugles in Canada anymore! I'd sign a petition to bring them back. I don't remember ever having Little Debbie but I do remember Bugles. And A&W Cream Soda. My first job was in an A&W. I miss the Root Beer slushy ice that would form immediately after you fill a root beer mug straight from the freezer.

I wish we still had Bugels, they were great, but we aren't missing much with the rest of that list. There's nothing on it that we dont have something as good or better up here. And A&W is, in my mind, most comparable to Wendy's, but the better burger. If youre thinking something along the lines of Wendy's or Burger King, but you wanna treat yourself, you go to A&W.

George Springer and Vladimir Guerrero Jr famously have TV ads for Uncrustables. They are available in Canada as of 2024. A&W along with the other brands distributed by Dr. Pepper are split in Canada among Coke and Pepsi. A&W is on the Coke side and they opted out of Cream Soda. There are A&W restaurants in the US but they are owned by a different company than A&W Canada and are not growing the same as in Canada.

Many of these products are still sold near the border. However, other than manufacturing and low sales, we do have equivalent products under different brand names. In general, they're quality is better. This is because Health Canada has stricter policies when it comes to chemicals in foods. This is why our foods are generally better tasting. Compare a Hershey product with a Cadbury/Nestle product for example. Same idea, different brand. Blind taste test them, you'd quickly see that Cadbury/Nestle has a better taste due to the lack of severe preservatives that are banned here.

Hi, in 2022 we (at least in Québec, but probably in other provinces too) were still under very strict COVID restriction, which obviously pushed forward the foodpocalypse as many company seeing their numbers going down have to revised their inventory from A to Z which led some distributors to drop some brands.
