After learning this song 2 years ago, I've been practicing and writing in DAEABE almost exclusively. I will share some fun anecdotes about the tuning that I've found; also if anyone also plays this tuning a lot, I would like to get in touch and share thoughts. Feel free to comment if you know something I may not. I also disclaim that I'm just a music theory enthusiast and am not a classically trained professional. I'll probably misplace some vocabulary and chord names. First off, being very similar to DAEAC#E and DADAC#E tuning used by innumerable emo/math rock projects, it has many of the same harmonic qualities. One of the main reasons to play these tunings is the panoply of easily accessible extended note chords that would otherwise be finger contortion to play on standard tuning. I'm sure if you're learning American Football, you've figured this out. When playing all open strings in DAEABE, you get an A9sus4/D chord. Your brain will probably automatically associate the key as A major. You basically have your strings 2, 3, and 4 (A, E, A) work like drop D (D, A, D) would, with the 4th degree of the scale (in our case, D) as our low string. To cut to the point, the thing that makes this song's tuning specifically cool is that the 5th string is a B (2nd degree) rather than C# (major 3rd). This allows you to move outside of A major. Try playing in A minor for instance. All of the open string's notes are shared between A maj and A min, whereas having a C# string locks you into the major if you want to use that open string. This frees up a lot of different harmonic options and gives new breath to this tuning. a fun quick technique: Use your A-E-A strings to finger out some 1-5-7 triads and just smash those open B and high E (5 and 6) strings for some rich sound. Example - Bm7 022000, C#m7 044200, D7 055400, Em7 077500, F#m7 099700, A7 0-12-12-11-0-0 Experiment my friends, I've only scratched the surface of what this tuning is capable of.
@@zetarodriguez3051 mike kinsella almost never writes in standard. there are some exceptions, like i think Take Care of Yourself, or at least something off of No Good For No One Now, but he mostly writes in alternate tunings
This is literally amazing. I've wished so hard they released an instrumental version of their 2016 album and you've made that dream partially come true, so thank you. Sounds fantastic too. You must have an amazing ear for picking the interwoven melodies apart from each other.
just posting the lyrics here so I can sing while playing this!😅 My instincts are the enemy i warned you I’ve damaged good inside of me i need you Translate all the colors that I can’t see I think I’m in trouble Can you explain why all the Reds look green to me? With my nerves exposed, I can’t say no My instincts are the enemy i warned you I’ve malevolence inside of me i need you I wanna taste a little bit of everything But it gets me in trouble To fill my plate with the vacant and obscene With my nerves exposed, I can’t say no I’m paralyzed, engaged in a civil war What can I do? Either way, I lose You lose, too Days are nights and nights are unbearable What can I do? Chained to this mood You’re chained to me Keep asking different questions The same answer I receive I need you more than ever to Tell me what you see
American Football are truly guitar artists. Their sound wouldn't be anywhere near as iconic and memorable if it wasn't for their insane songwriting ability and mastery of their instruments. I can never get enough of them.
Awesome! This album has grown on me a lot since it's release and I think it's a worthy successor to their first. It's so lush and there's plenty of beautiful parts and catchy sections. I'm glad you're doing some awesome work transcribing this stuff.
