What the highlights you picked completely failed to do was set the context of this innings and highlight the extreme physical duress he played under. Context: 1. This was a must win game to make it into the World Cup finals 2. Australia lost quick wickets early in a big run chase 3. Early in Maxwells innings he watched his batting partners fall until Cummins came in after the last of the recognized batters 4. When Cummins came in Australia were 7/91 and chasing 292 5. In their 200 run partnership Cummins only scored about 8 runs 6. Due to the heat and humidity, from around the time Maxwell scored his first century he was battling severe cramps. The one showed in the highlights where he was flopping around on the ground was a full body cramp. Soon after that one he hit a six off a reverse sweep. A decent highlights package would give all that information and show his struggles. I would suggest finding a video of the whole innings to get an appreciation of just how special this was. I will leave you with a quote from Ricky Ponting, a former Australian captain and one of Australias highest run scorers: I have played a lot of cricket, and I have watched a lot of cricket, but I have never seen anything like this. It is something you will never,ever see again in international cricket.

Wasn't a must win game, but the rest is completely correct. Watched it tv live, Australia had all but conceded defeat 7 down. Maxwell said 'Fuck it'. Dropped twice, the one on 36 any 10 year old should catch.

Foot work is very important for a batter. As you might notice towards the end of his innings he doesn’t move his feet. That is normally a big no no. But he was so badly cramped that he couldn’t and that is another reason why this was an amazing knock.

He’s not the first one to score 200 in a one day match, but I think he is the first one to do it coming in at 5 or 6 in the batting order. But also why this is considered the greatest is because of the context of the match, Aus we’re under pressure chasing a large total, AND maxwell was suffering from cramps. You don’t get the same tension from watching highlights, I saw this live on TV and is definitely the best innings I have ever seen!

Imagine your best baseball hitter going out to bat with 2 broken fingers because he does not want to let his team down this is how brave he is and it is not the first time, if he went off injured they only had there 2 worst hitters left they would definitely lose. They went on to get in and win the world cup absolute legend.

So, to answer a couple of questions you had. The foam rope that runs around the edge of the field is the limit of the field. Any fielder that goes over that is out of bounds. There is some nuance here though. Some fielders have started taking a catch, and knowing that their momentum would carry them over the ropes they throw the ball up and back into the field of play, for a team mate to catch, or even to catch it themselves as they recover an come back into the field of play. Any ball that goes over that rope on the full, counts as 6 runs. If the ball touches or goes over the rope after touching the ground or a fielder in play, the batsman will score 4 runs. Now onto Maxwell's specific innings. His score was a record high score in Cricket world cup matches. There have been higher scores in One day matches, but not in a world cup. Maxwell spent about half his innings cramping up so badly he could barely walk, and could hardly run, so to score quickly enough he had to hit balls to the fence or beyond. To do that, while cramping hard, and chasing a big total when the first 4 batsmen fell fairly early, is staggering, and unheard of. You can probably see that as his innings went on, his stance and movements became rather strange, but remained highly effective. He has always been a fairly effective switch hitter, and he used it to full effect. As to his motioning and hitting the ball to that area, he wasn't signalling his intentions, he was motioning for the sight screen (a big white {Correction:black} screen behind the bowler to give the batsman a clean backdrop to be able to see the ball clearly). Always glad to see someone getting into watching cricket. Good stuff man. It is a fantastic sport.

Point of correction; Martin Guptill (237) and Chris Gayle (215) both passed 200 in the 2015 edition of the World Cup, so Maxwell has the third highest score in WCC. However, he is the first non opener to pass 200, and the first player ever to score 200 in a run chase/2nd innings, in all ODIs ever played.

Remember the ball can bounce and that adds complexity and they can hit 360 degrees around the ground. 4 for hitting the boundary and 6 for over the fence. He had cramp so he had to innovate with his shots This was not just a big score but one done in quick pace.

One thing I've found most don't realise (even many of my fellow Australian's) is how fast the ball is coming. The dude can just aim it at you without any foul or repercussions. I capitained the Western Australia jnr side for 2 years. 14 years old. Australia were playing in a test at the WACA so we got to meet the players ect and have a muck around net session. I was bowled to by the legendary Shane Warne and Glen McGrath..... I slapped McGrath a couple of times easily and said "Don't go easy Macca, give it up". This man smiled at me then proceded to bowl full pace, full run up deliveries. Absolute fear is all I can remember. It was so fast, self preservation was the only instinct. After proper 4 balls Mr McGrath "You done? I said 'yes sir'.

I think in the context of the game & his severe leg cramps, this has to be close to the greatest innings of all time. It definitely lifted the Australian team who kept playing better & better to go and win the World Cup, despite being the underdogs - by a long shot.

To all the people who say that he could only swing with his arms, or hit with his wrists or couldn’t move his feet, I say, what does a golfer do? Maxwell is an excellent golfer and he knows that you don’t need to move your feet literally to shift the pressure in your feet to create power. The second half of his innings, although under serious duress, was a masterclass in ball striking from a relatively stationary position, with some extra help from a brain dead bowling approach.

@mikeythehat6693

It was a pretty good effort considering he was playing injured, also, just so you know Johnny, in Cricket, you don't HAVE to hit the ball to "run". You can completely swing and miss and then run if you want to. So the fielders have to be on their game because if they overthrow or whatever the batters can score extra runs. Also, also, hitting it in the gaps is definitely a thing in Cricket. A ball hit to the Boundary along the ground (or with a bounce) is worth 4 runs, a ball hit over the Boundary on the full is worth 6 runs.

johnnybasement430 G'day mate, don't worry about the poor quality of the highlights video. We know that its hard to find good quality videos of current sporting events because of all the copyright bs. The worst thing about the package you watched was that it gave you no context as to what was happening in the game. Which definitely didn't make it easy for you (or any newbie to the game) to appreciate the magnitude of Maxi's innings. A basic voiceover would have been great. It could have explained how hopeless the situation seemed when he came to bat. How he hit the highest score in a World Cup, or how he was cramping throughout the second hundred runs etc. Despite all that, I still enjoyed your reactions, you got that he was 'hitting the gaps in the field' particularly well. Good to see an American making the effort to get into cricket 🏏👍

Okay, this video does not show any of the vital context of WHY it was the greatest One Day International Innings. If you watch it again you will notice all sorts of things that aren't discussed (because let's face it, this was just the Boundaries [Fours and Sixes] and there was virtually no commentary due to the rapid editing). If you watch the first half of his Innings, you will see a great display of Batting; you are correct that Maxwell is very much choosing where he hits the balls. His focus is perfect, eyes on the ball the whole time and powerful hitting, getting right behind the path of the ball, using his footwork, timing everything to perfection. But if you watch the second half of the Innings, Maxwell barely moves his feet, that is because he CAN'T. He had been ill during the week prior and playing in very hot conditions, he began to cramp. He cramped so severely that his body was in full spasm and you briefly see in the video that his falls to the ground and goes stiff. The Team medical Staff came and worked on him on the ground. He had the option of leaving the ground for treatment, but the Physiotherapist said, 'if you go up those stairs, we won't be able to get you back down'...so Maxwell took treatment and proceeded to complete this incredible performance on NO LEGS! He still kept his eye on the ball, he still got behind the ball, he still hit delivery after delivery over the Boundary. He won us the game (from a hopeless position btw), which enabled us to win the ODI World Cup. I have watched Cricket for 49 years and I have never seen an Innings like it.

Over the rope on the full is worth 6 (back in the day before anyone cared about safety it used to be over the fence for 6) and one or more bounces to the rope is worth 4. You can't catch it over the rope (when it was the fence you could lean on it to catch it) but you can tap it back as long as your feet don't touch the ground over the rope and the ball doesn't touch the ground - there have been some crazy catches like that. We (Australia) were completely fucked in this game - Maxwell was a 1 man show, after this we went on to win the whole comp but it was dicey up until this innings. I almost went to bed we were going so bad but i stayed up til 3AM and saw one of the best if not the best innings ever.

There’s a good reason why Glenn Maxwell has the nickname of “The Big Show”. He’s an absolute freak show when he gets going, and what made that innings of his even more special was he came in to bat with Australia in all sorts of trouble, and in an International ODI it’s quite amazing to score a century, let alone a double century, and to do it with immense cramps from dehydration he was basically wacking them all over the park on one leg. The poor bloke could barely stand let alone play out an innings like that to win the game for his country. I watched it live and from all the amazing innings I’ve seen him play, this was no doubt for me, the best ODI innings I’ve ever seen. 🇦🇺😎👍 You probably already know by now, but to hit the ball to the boundary while touching the ground at least once is 4 runs, to hit it over the boundary line without touching the playing surface is 6 runs.
@piglos

"That barrier" is the boundary. You can cross it to take a catch or field a ball, but if you are in contact with the ball and ground outside that boundary, it is a 4 or 6
@emjem99

He's probably pointing to get the sight screen adjusted. The sight screen is behind the bowler beyond the boundary which gives the batter a clean contrast to see the ball against.
@brucelamberton8819
@brucelamberton8819 7 месяцев назад
@8:57 no, he wasn't "calling his shot". When a batsman waves their arms like that it's because a member of the crowd (or security staff) are standing in front of the sightscreen at the end(s) of the ground which can be a distraction when the ball is bowled, and they are telling them to move out of the way.

Our whole life should be a learning journey. Props to you Johnny Basement for being willing to take on the mysteries of cricket 😂 In answer to your question , if a ball is hit cleanly over the boundary rope that counts as 6 runs. If the ball hits the boundary rope, or hits the ground and bounces over the boundary rope, that counts as 4 runs, even if touched by a fielder.
@georgeedmond3401
@georgeedmond3401 8 месяцев назад
Nice reaction. Maxwell wasn't calling his shots btw, he was calling for the side-screen -the big wall thing (on tracks generally) on the boundary behind the bowlers arm- to be moved or for people standing near it to be moved. As the ball is bowled, the batsman needs to see the hand of the bowler and the screen gives a blank back ground as opposed to things moving around and whatnot. Steve Smith recently stopped play for a fist sized black roll of tape that distracted him from 300 feet away. Someone had to retrieve it before play continued.

Also, unlike baseball where each batter just runs around the bases once… in cricket, the batter stays in play until they are out. In a five day Test Match (the peak of 1st class cricket), there have been occasions where a batsman stays at the crease (on the pitch) for the entire day (10am-6pm with a lunch break) in the heat and humidity in Australia or India.

I stayed up all night to watch this, the temperature was 35 and 100% humidity, which just about killed him. After 120, he couldn't use his legs, heat cramped. You put your feet to the ball to hit the ball to control where the ball goes. Maxwell did the last 80 all upper body. At one stage, hes on his back with cramps from the neck down. Over the rope/fence is 6 runs, you can only catch the ball in play, but you can drop a catch for 6. Lots a rules in cricket, some are a little gray.

The bat is considered part of the batsman's body when running, so if they can ground the bat over the crease (the line) before the fielding team can dislodge the bails, then they're safe. The little barrier is the boundary line, players can only take a catch if they are within the boundary (some complications, but that's the short version). Hitting the ball over the boundary on the full is worth 6 runs. If it bounces or rolls over the boundary, it's worth 4 runs. Seems Maxwell was having severe cramps in this footage, so hitting boundaries keeps the scoreboard ticking over and he doesn't have to run.

Nice batting skills. Remember in cricket, the bowler doesn't have to put it over the plate... The captain may ask the bowler to put every ball of the 6 (over) down the left side of the batsman. If the batsman is right handed this is called his on-side. If the ball stays left, it is very difficult to hit the ball to the right side. This allows the Captain to bring more fielders across from the off-side to the on-side and have a greater chance of lowering the amount of runs taken and a catch. For the batting side, a good tactic is to have a left and a right hander at bat, so every time 1 run is scored, the fielding team have to run to the opposite side to maintain their position (mirror image). Of course if the bowler strays off this left side bowling line, the batsman has a easier job of finding space... If the batsman facing the bowler (at bat) continuously changes from right to left hander the bowler must continually change his line (direction) of pitch. This is where errors come in for both bowler and batsman. This is the cat and mouse strategy which fans love.

the rope you see is the boundary, too many fielders were getting injured going into the boards, sometimes concrete so they put in a rope. Its 4 if it bounces 6 runs on the full over the rope. You can hit it 120 metres its till only 6. 1 f the best ever innings due to the timing of it and the circumstances. Enjoy the game Johnny I played for many years and still get shiver when I see an innings like this.

Switching from right hand to left hand (or vice versa) is not a common skill in cricket. Maxwell can, and is probably the best in the world to do it. Supposedly he learned because while playing in school, he was too good right handed so his friends made him bat left handed, with the result that he just got good at that too. The 174 was the highest score in a men's World Cup match, not of all time. A double century (200) is rare but not unheard of. What makes this so remarkable is that it was 200 not out, it single handedly won Australia the game, and it was done with Maxwell suffering from serious cramp. The man could barely walk, let alone run or use his feet, both of which are generally considered essential to score in cricket. Instead, Maxwell just stood there and clubbed everything to the boundary. He gets 6 runs for hitting it over the rope (the little wall you mentioned) on the full, and 4 if the ball touches the ground before the rope. They're called a 6 and 4 respectively. If the fielder catches the ball and contacts the ground beyond the rope then it is not out, and the batter is awarded 6 runs, as the ball crossed the rope without touching the ground (even if it was caught before the rope then carried over!) What you thought was calling his shot was probably Maxwell moving the sight screen, or perhaps signalling to the dressing room. There are screens at each end of the ground behind the bowler designed to block out visual distractions for the batter. They can ask the ground staff to move the screen left or right to meet their preference.

The ball crossing rope on ground is 4 runs The ball crossing rope in air is 6 runs He was injured in last half why you see he's not moving and hitting to boundaries That is the skill of game to hit where gaps are but bowlers put ball where your weakness is The reason this is rated high as limited overs only 50 over to face most players struggle to hit a 100 if in form Where in test cricket that has 5 days of play are more 200 scores So to do it in 50 overs and leg injury from cramp on top of highest ever scored in that limited overs is pretty special and may never be seen again As us Aussie's say when batsman in form he's seeing the ball the size of a football No he wasn't pointing out where he was hitting the ball but was getting screen behind bowler moved to block out crowd Its white so the batsman can see the bowlers arm and ball release The rules are different in this formate as well because their a thing called power ball and the batting team can call it anytime they want This restricts the bowling side from putting all fielders on boundaries and have to have so many in side the centre circle for a limited ammount of overs Alot comes down to the pitch on how much it moves off it This must have been a flat pitch where the ball didn't move much and batsman could see where the ball would travel But you still have to have the skills as a batsman to hit the ball that consistently over a short period of time I hope this helps you understand more if any questions just asked The likely hood of being repeated again is extremely small Its a Donald Bradman type of history never to be repeated But in limited overs game This is why the hype To put in perspective most teams struggle to make 200 using the whole team of batsman in this format Many different to hit the ball as you change the angle of bat by closing the face or opening it up by using wrist and hand movements As you hear a commutators say how bottom hand came through with power and another how dug out All these variations from speed to wrist movements to angle of bat changes where the ball will go if you hit middle of bat Why edging the ball is dangerous as they dont have control of where they want to place the ball and get caught or bowled On top of watching the release of ball then depending on what wicket is doing to predict where ball is and how to hit it in seconds Its like all top athletes tennis motor racing they can make minute changes in seconds as its what they trained for all their lives To us we'd be lucky to see the ball yet their so in tuned with it they see it normal speed for them and why bowlers change pace of balls This keeps unpredictability and doubt in batsman mind only the great batsman adjust Cheers mate 🦘🇦🇺👍

If the ball gets hit to the boundary line along the ground or bounces over the boundary line, it's worth 4 runs.
@darrenjhodgey4734

Hit the ball where the fielders are not yes. Over the fielders into the crowd on the full is 6 runs. Hit along the ground or if the ball doesn't land in the crowd is worth 4 runs. Hit the ball and a fielder stops the ball hitting the fence or rope , is like a hit and run to 1st base in baseball, If the ball is hit good enough to run more that 1 run , like a 1st base , the batter can run 2 times , from one end to the other to get 2 runs or sometimes always 3 runs. Basically the rules with this game is there are bowlers who all rotate between specific good bowlers... there is 300 balls that are bowled for both teams. The batting teams job is to score as many runs through out the 300 balls that are bowled. So if you can see Maxwell making 200 runs just by himself with a extra 100 balls that the team bowel at the other batters , then Maxwell has played the innings of his best. In this particular match, Afghanistans total team effort batting 300 balls 1st was around 290 runs , then the team batting 2nd needs to chase 290 runs all up with 10 batsman. I hope this makes a bit of sense to you and helps the learning of this awesome sport?!! 😂😂

Over the ropes on the full is 6 runs, bouncing first then over the ropes is 4 runs, catchers have to catch the ball on the full inside the ropes (barrier in your words, technically called a boundary).

That little barrier is technically the "boundary". If the ball gets hit over it on the full, it's 6 runs. If it touches the ground before reaching it, that's 4 runs. A fielder can "save" runs by flipping the ball backwards before he slides or steps across the boundary even though the batsmen may have already run a couple which will count. In other words he might turn a possible 4 runs into only 2 runs with a save at the boundary. He can save 6 runs only by doing some fancy aerial acrobatics and knocking it back into the field while his feet are off the ground, because if his body (normally feet) touches the ground outside that boundary while he has the ball, the score counts. This save does happen on rare occasions, and if he knocks it back on the full and a fielder nearby catches it, the batsman can be out. There are spectacular videos of this happening too.

Try to cover some explanations. The batter must cross the line to be safe however the bat is considered part of the batter when holding it so the bat can touch the line and be safe which is why they scrape the bat in front when running. Similarly the clove of the batsman is considered the bat. Not relevant for your question but may be useful to know later when catching someone if they miss and it hits the glove that's considered a hit. If the ball touches the ground prior to crossing the rope or fence (considered the same and dependent on the oval/field) that is called a 4 and equal to 4 runs. If the ball crosses on the full it's a 6 equal to 6 runs. If the fielder catches the ball but crosses the rope while touching the ground doing it, its not out and they get the 4 or 6 as though it wasn't caught. There are some great catches where the ball has crossed in the air but the fielder has caught it while jumping and thrown it back in before touching the ground saving the six and in some cases ran back in to catch it before it touched the geouNd to be batter OUT

Greatest ever is an opinion based on lots of things rather then a factual statement exactly. It wasn't to total score that made it so great it was the fact he saved the game, was the first to do it so late in the batting order, world cup match as well as half a dozen other records broken. He also did it while cramping up and injured. At one point ay was stopped while he was collapsed on the ground cramping up as others have mentioned already.

They call him The Big Show, greatest one day 50 over innings, there are 3 forms of cricket, Test match can go 5 days up to 2 innings per side, one day international 50 overs per side, T20, 20 overs per side. Over the fence or boundary is a 6 even if it hits the fielders hands or body, along the ground if it goes to the boundary is a 4. Even if it hits the fielders hands. You can't catch the ball if your feet are on the ground over the boundary, you can jump in the air, parry the ball back into the field of play then you or anyone on the fielding side can catch it.

So the reason it was the great ever was the context. They were almost certain to lose when Cummins came in at 7/44. If they had lost they may have not made the finals. Then he started cramping and couldn’t move his legs. There is probably no other batsman who could have played those shots without the movement of his legs.

Maxwell wasn't "calling his shot(s)". In cricket there's a "sightscreen" behind the bowler, and for white-ball cricket it's a black screen. This is to allow the batsman to see the ball clearly from the bowler's hand. If there's someone standing in front of the sightscreen, then the batsman will signal for that idiot to "get out of the way you moron". Another similar signal is to request for the sightscreen to be shifted slightly. So essentially the batsman was saying "hey, there's a problem that needs to be fixed before I'm ready".

Best to check out a clip about the rules of the game first otherwise a lot of these highlight clips don’t make much sense. 4 runs for a ball that bounces before the boundary rope. 6 runs for over it. Used to be over the fence but obviously it’s too dangerous for players trying to stop the ball before either happens. Watch 40 best catches too afterwards. T20 is the quickest form of the game. 20 overs of 6 balls (10 from 1 end 10 from other end of the pitch. One over from 1 end then 1 over from the other. This performance was particularly brilliant as he was suffering from India’s notorious heat and humidity. Usually over 100F with high humidity. Suffering from leg cramps here which his hitting even more impressive. Amazing timing and strength to hit 6’s with just a flick of the wrists. Need strong forearms to achieve it. T20 games last 3 hours. Australia beat the odds in winning the recent World Cup in front of the most frenetic cricket supporters in the world. 125000 Indians were there. It was groundbreaking. One for the ages. A lot of strategy in forms. 5 day Test matches and one day 50 over each side games. Watch rules clip next to understand the rules. Then the rest will fall into place.

Did really well after falling off the golf cart a week earlier, best ever in the 50-over format, or one day international Test Match takes 5 days . Usually, an opener or first drop can make that score but its un heard of that far down the order of 10 batsmen. That innings was responsible in the end a weeks later for Australia winning the World Cup after losing its first two matches. Over the boundary on the full is a SIX before the boundary then hitting rope is FOUR , the rest you have to run between the wickets . Only way over the barrier to catch is if your in the air and knock back in field to catch yourself or another fielder, If feet touch the barrier or the ground no.
