Are you confident in your ability to diagnose American foul brood? In this video, Emma Walters from Cornell University describes this bacterial infection, why it should be on your radar, how to accurately diagnose it, and what to do if you find it.
This video is a collaboration between Cornell University and the NYS Department of Agriculture and Markets. Its creation was possible through a USDA grant provided by the Plant Protection Act- Section 7721.

Ohhh, I'm so glad to see another video from you! All excellent as always :) I'm so happy to say that I haven't come across AFB or EFB for many years.

Wow. AFB is still out there. I haven't heard about regular old bee diseases in decades. When I was beekeeping in the olden days (as my kids the 70s), AFB was the real bugaboo.

This is a very informative and useful video and good use of views of frames, but one thing I do suggest is that the bees should be shaken off any brood frame when inspecting for AFB. It only takes one cell to be infected for the diagnosis so each cell must be visible.

I always enjoy your videos. You do a great job of clearly explaining things and offering a very concise detail of what to look for. I can’t wait to see future videos of yours. A year ago as I was putting my plan together to get started in beekeeping. I used your videos over my first year as a great resource when I had questions. I hope in the future you’ll do some videos on queen rearing. I know you’ll give me a great explanation and great video to accompany your lecture. Thanks again for your great insight!

Thank you you’re a wealth of knowledge. I have a leaven hives and two of them about a week ago absconded. I just went through a few of the frames and some of them are perforated I can’t determine whether it’s American fell through or not because when I do the matchstick test it’s not Ropey.

Hi Robert, do you have any photos of the brood issues? If so, you can share them with us at dycebees@cornell.edu and we can take a look at them. You can also get in touch with your state or provincial apiculturist to arrange to have an inspector come to your operation to identify the disease.

When you put a matchstick into a capped cell and you get white liquid coming out, what would that be. Thanks.

Would they still have a smell if the hive absconded and left behind a lot of brood?
@dycelabforhoneybeestudies4833
@dycelabforhoneybeestudies4833 3 года назад
Yes, it's the decomposing brood that causes the smell

Thank you. I did a little research and looked a little further into the combs of the absconded hives and determined it’s not American foulbrood.

AFB is a disease of the Brood so not with the disease but it can be contaminated with spores.

Very informative video. One question I have is there an unusual odor that one can smell through the top vents? I have had one hive die out already this fall and it had a very high mite load which I was unable to get under control. There was a good amount of dead brood in the cells which I gather that there simply was not enough bees left to look after them. There was a smell coming from those frames that is kind of hard to describe. I have frozen those frames so will start checking them keeping in mind the info you presented here.
@dycelabforhoneybeestudies4833
@dycelabforhoneybeestudies4833 3 года назад
Yes, if the infection is moderate or severe there is usually an unpleasant, rotten odor. In your case, inspect that dead brood and look for the symptoms we covered in this video. Is it mucousy in consistency? Is it caramel brown in color? Is there black scale laying on the bottom of some cells?

Another great video and another great reason not to waste your money on the Cornell Master Beekeeping course; everything you get in the course they make available for free! Although the course does lay things out in order it is certainly not worth $600 -$900 dollars!!!

great info but basically it comes down to more big brother controlling everything we do. if a person has brains enough to have bees. they have brains enough to watch for diseases.. How long before people will be tested before they can have bee hives on their land.
