American Girl Doll Haul We Purchased...From a Hoarder?

The exciting part of this video? We got lots of cool things for our dolls at a pretty good price?
The not-so-great part of this video? Getting those cool things brought me face to face with doll addiction (or shopping addiction or hoarding...) and it was very sad. My father was a hoarder (of books and paperwork rather than dolls) so I have experienced the impacts of hoarding firsthand.
I have intentionally not shared any photos from the seller's public listing. And I've waited a while to post this so that it's less likely a viewer could identify the seller (we've since been in four different states, so where we got the items shouldn't be evident). My intent in mentioning the details I did share about the seller is not to shame them or to reveal their identity. It's to point out the very concerning reality that this hobby becomes something unhealthy for some people and to encourage each of us to ask the important questions about our own collecting to determine if it is problematic. I want each of us to enjoy these beautiful dolls in healthy ways that enhance our lives and if that ceases to be the case, it's time to pause, reevaluate, adjust, and maybe even consider professional help.
Thank you, as always, for sharing your time with me and for your kindness and support. It means a ton!

You should probably call child protective services if you haven’t already, and you don’t need to say publicly whether or not you did for your/ their privacy. But yeah they can help, since there was a kid living there and there were mouse droppings so it’s a health concern. They won’t put the child in care unless it’s absolutely necessary, and they’ll try to get the parents and the kid some help dealing with all this stuff.

It really is a problem. It can strain partnerships, impact children, create shame and defensiveness... we don't tend to make light of drug or alcohol addiction, but as a society for some reason we downplay the destructiveness of problematic shopping.

I completely agree re: shopping addiction. Thank you for addressing this. As the comment below says, I would also be concerned about bed bugs. I've only had one run-in with bed bugs in my life, and it all turned out fine, but it was so traumatizing that I will never, ever go into a hotel again without checking under the mattresses. I can imagine that a situation like this could have put you at risk as well.

@@bethbacarella definitely! My father was a hoarder and as a senior citizen, when he'd been living alone 4 years and had accumulated a ridiculous amount of paperwork and books (what he hoarded) it got to the point where he wouldn't let anyone in. He got bed bugs and wouldn't let someone in to treat it. The entire thing was kind of a nightmare, so we definitely inspect things thoroughly!

@@bethbacarella yep... as a child I never really thought of my dad is a hoarder because our house was never more clever than any other house I visited. Thanks for insightful intro…I always hesitate in situations where items come from less than clean environments as I fear bedbug eggs , etc. This group of items would be sold on eBay and other sites for a considerable markup. I think that it's a lot more common in the doll community than folks realise, and some of the "joking" is that "haha oh :(" kind of joking folks do when it really IS a problem. I have schizoaffective disorder, which is a very bad mood disorder. I was into buying everything that comes out. But, I had a flood in my condo and have to replace a lot of stuff at once, not related to the flood that broke. After buying the Janie and Jack items, pajamas on Ebay, and Molly’s dog for 15 dollars. I have quite a bit and am slowing down on buying for my dolls. Now, that I have realized I don’t need everything, I will have more room for the dolls that I have and their accessories and clothing. When I started collecting American Girl, I gave away all of my Our Generation dolls and clothing to someone who would enjoy them more. There were 3 dolls and probably 50 outfits and 12 pairs of extra shoes. It’s bad enough that I have to keep dolls and beds in both of my bedroom and plastic containers of items in my spare room. So, I have to go through my closets, drawers and cabinets and get rid of things that I don’t need, that have accumulated over the years. The last thing I want is rats 🐀. They are disgusting and I don’t want them crawling around on my things. Besides, they can chew a doll up. I know that I was using the dolls for emotional support and I didn’t empty my closets out when I should. So, I can relate to the hoarders. Also, my brother-in-law had a traumatic childhood. So, while he brought home an great salary, he filled his whole vacation house up and his regular house has a lot of clutter. So much so, as he can’t fix the water heater or air conditioner. He was from the country. So, he wouldn’t be afraid of of “the critters”. But, my sister wouldn’t like them. Maybe, that’s why she doesn’t go to the vacation house.
@agtakesover
@agtakesover Год назад
Thank you so much for being willing to share. Obviously these dolls serve a lot of purposes in our lives - creative outlets, emotional support, etc. And there's nothing wrong with that, but you know firsthand that sometimes things cross a line and or approach to then can create more negatives than positives. I'm glad you're finding a healthy middle ground where having fewer dolls and accessories allows you to enjoy the ones that you have more.

Hi there, i recently subscribed to your channel so im going thru your videos and i have to say i love your channel, i think its because we are somewhat around the same age, don't get me wrong i like some off the younger youtubers channels also but your channel is just a tadd more serious i guess, i live in South Africa so we don't get Ag dolls here except if one import them yourself and i really don't wanna venture down that road again its a lot off trouble and the cost of import is just rediciolous so ive found Og dolls, im not a serious collector tho i buy the dolls mostly secondhand so i can customize them, been trough a ruff time recently myself, struggling with depression and the one og doll i recieved from one off my friends had a verry deep cut in her frindge, probable stumbled into a child with a scissor, anyway it was during the time i was in a deep depression again and i started fixing up this doll, i used yarn and decided to put some long braids into the pieces that had been cut, and ended up putting some pieces of ribbon and small charms that meant something to me in her hair, she became my therapy and now im trying to make a habbit off putting stuff in her hair, it really helped me and im thinking of creating ooak dolls for people who struggle with mental health issues and just for basically anyone one who struggle with any kind off related things. I am actually a seamstress and ive made my doll the cutest little hippy outfit and the outfit really matches her haistyle now and i have to say it makes me feel a whole lot better, i know that i still need professional help with my depression but it makes me handle every day a little bit easier and im happy about that, and i really enjoy your channel.

I'm so glad you're enjoying the channel! And I completely get what you're saying about your dolls helping with your depression. In some cases the dolls can be part of the problem (with compulsive spending or hoarding, for example) but in others, they can be part of the solution (adding a bright spot to your day, giving you a healthy escape and creative outlet, for example). And I know they are no substitute for therapy and/or medical treatment when those are needed, but I do agree they can be a good additional tool to help with certain mental health challenges. @agtakesover
@agtakesover Год назад
No, definitely not dementia. Not that I'm qualified to make these conclusions at all, but as I'm thinking back on that house and the situation, it was more likely shopping addiction than hoarding. My father was a hoarder and had irrational emotional attachments to the things he hoarded. It distressed him to part with things as insignificant as a random newspaper article he'd cut out months ago with the intent of sending it to one of us kids (or even some memo about a workplace meeting...from the job he hadn't worked at for a decade). This seller didn't exhibit those signs. They had the clutter I associate with a hoarder. And the neglect of the home that can accompany hoarding. But they didn't seem overly attached to the items. Compulsive/addicted shopping definitely were at play, though. It really was sad, and I think that's more common than the doll collecting community likes to admit.
