To be precise this Carrefour has old cash system. Most markets today switch to weight in the cashier station, so you don't need to go through inconvenient manual weighting. Increasing number of shop also has automated sell stations.

They don't really have vegetables in Polish cuisine haha they do. Most of the traditional, home cooked dinners that you get at an average Polish household consist of some protein (mostly meat), potatoes and a salad (surówka or sałatka). Moreover, Poles love soups and a lot of vegetables go into those, too. So yeah, I kind of disagree :D

Żabka is emergency shop - many people in Poland this shop a shop of the last need. You go there just because you forgot something and any other shop is closed. In Biedronka you have put loose stuff on scale, but in lidl scales are build into the cash registers, even those self-service. Cereals in Europe generally are less sweety than in USA cause of legal regulations that banned certain ingredients.
Each self-service cash register in all of Biedronkas I've been to has scale built in, basically u either scan code or weight on a scale and pick what u've weighted. The part that u put already weighted or scan products also has a controlling scale which causes notorious problems with buns and breads that in reality are usually heavier than their system expects. Please don't spread misinformation about Biedronkas here ;).
It's a good shop, if you want to buy cigarettes and a 4 pak of beer that's on sale and maybe a back of chips with it. For normal groceries, it's the last resort.
It's alcoholics' shops first and foremost. Normal people don't really buy anythng there. I only got there for energy drink early in the morning or for their 'bagietka paryska'.

By European standards, it's large. For comparison Paris, France, is 3 times smaller (of course, Paris has much larger population). And Seattle, WA, USA, covers about 80 square miles.

Yeah, there is fantastic bread in Poland. But not the one in supermarkets, which is being made of deep frozen dough on a mass scale. You need to look for more traditional bakery to be able to taste traditional products. Also in case of meat you can definitely find something of better quality, but it will be much more expensive.
you really seem to have never tasted western breads. They taste like cardboard compared to polish supermarket bread. So it is no wonder he likes the supermarket ones.
Not really with this meat. I have smaller market Top Market and meat there is fresh, not packed and very, very good and cheaper than in Lidl or Biedronka. You just need to find good place.
20 minutes by bike - only in old center, center of Cracow. Other places outisde center "Śródmieście" you would ride 1 hour by bike and still not reach the end
There are 3 reason anyone goes to zabka: 1. Its the nearest thing/emergency 2. You want to eat something (hotdog etc) and optionally also shop (optionally, could be just coming in just for the dog) 3. Main reason: they, unlike most shop, are open on sundays (due to a legal loophole, as most shop have to be closed on sundays unless the person working is just the owner) So yeah its just an emergency shop, lol

Honestly, I wouldn't dare to eat bread which could last for longer than few days because it would mena It was packed with chemistry up to the roof, that could be really harmful. This is the product that you buy only fresh in Poland because this is the only proper way how the bread should be eaten. You even would not find in Biedronka or bakery bread that wasn't made the same day.
You don't really know what you're talking about. Real bread with good ingredients, made honestly, on sourdough, according to old recipes will last up to two weeks. It is the chemical, poor quality bread that quickly becomes hard as stone.

IF you want good bread go to bakery. Supermarket ones are only acceptable.Even brand bakeries like „buczek” or „aviteks” in Kraków have much better bread

I don't buy food in the supermarkets anymore, only necessary stuff, i usually go to place where local farmers sell their products (vegetables, fruits, meat and even dairy products), is so much better than products in the supermarket and often cheaper/same price, only bread are more expensive but they are much heavier than from store.
Tak tylko powiem, bo jestem ze wsi i w życiu nie kupiłbym warzyw czy owoców od "lokalnych, świeżych dostawców" (chyba, że bym ich zweryfikował). W sklepie przynajmniej są jakieś regulacje i koleś może sobie narobić kłopotów sprzedając przeładowane chemią jedzenie, a prawda jest taka, że nagminne w szczególności wśród mniejszych rolników (przynajmniej skąd ja pochodzę) jest nadużywanie chemii. W mojej wsi sam znam kilku takich, którzy pryskają ogórki godzinę przed zrywaniem, 5-krotną dawką, to samo z ziemniakami i innymi warzywami. A potem jeżdzą i reklamują się, że sprzedają "od prawdziwego, lokalnego rolnika".

In Poland I would recommend shopping at Lidl more than Biedronka or Żabka, the quality of pretty much everything at Lidl is way better in my opinion and it's also way cheaper
Just a heads up - the bread in all these supermarkets is made from frozen dough and uses preservatives. It's not good. If you want to try some real, fresh, tasty Polish bread, go to a bakery (Grzybki, Galeria Wypieków, etc.). The difference is substantial. There's nothing better than a fresh, warm slice of bread.
Niekoniecznie, chleb fitness w biedrze jest moim ulubionym pieczywem, i jest tak jak powiedział spokojnie nawet po 3 dniach jest OK a skład ma super, polecam! A taki świeżutki z pieca, taki chrupiący, taki cieplutki .... OMG...

Great movie, and the sun is finally shining. If you want high quality bread you have to buy it from a bakery. Vegetables are best at a classic market. Did you manage to get to know Krakow better? The churches and the old town are wonderful.
I went to the Carrefor in Kracow in the mall there, stocked up on the liquor to bring home, and to enjoy in the hotel room as well, LOL. Loved Zabka, literally they are everwhere and so convenient for quick snakcs, drinks, munchies for the hotel room, I love Poland, another underrated country (which is best because it keeps it from insane traps) regarding the cheese, milk and dairy, they know what organic is all about. better quality of foods.
most of fermented milk products shouldn't contain any lactose, unfortunately they do it may be better than in USA but depending on the level of your intolerance you may still suffer after eating a cup of yogurt

If you don't eat much bread you can put half of it in the freezer. My aunt don't eat much bread and she store it in freezer and just take out 2-3 slices at a time.
If you're lactose intolerant try goat chees and milk. Bread is better in proper bakeries than in Biedronka. We have lots of vegetables in the Polish cuisine. You probably haven't tasted many home made meals yet. ;)
6:11 supermarket bread is not the best quality and does not even come close to proper polish bread from a bakery. In supermarkets, they get frozen pre-baked bread (with artificial add-ons and preservatives), which they finish off in the ovens in store, hence the scent of freshly made bread (that makes you hungry and want to buy more), but as you say, if you don't eat it the same day, it goes stale quickly. If you go to a real bakery, they bake the bread usually at night or very early in the morning from natural ingredients. This would last a week but don't keep it wrapped in plastic bag.
If you wanna buy really really fresh meat or fish come to Makro or Sellgros. These are market where restaurants and shops make their shopping and usually you need a special retail client card but you can get this also for a private use just ask at the customer service desk before starting shoppig. Anyway they have the widest selection of products (these makrets can be very huge) of all different cusines. You maight be able to find all "fancy" products like duck, rabbit, boar meat. When I want to make sushi I use fresh salmon or tuna only from them cause they really always have the most fresh products. Problam may be that this markets are usually on the far suburbs of the city. You wont find them in the center.
I have legit never seen this biedronka be this empty after 5pm. And i lived there for like 5 years to study. This one was known for being a mess and always full - must have been cause of summer break.
As @OmniSzron and others said earlier - bread in supermarkets isn't that good. It's fine, but if you really want THE bread go to the bakery or find a free stand with local products and ask for "chleb na zakwasie". Those are usually priced by weight not by piece, and with the first bite you will understand why. Those are really really dense and satiating units, with much longer shelf life. Try those and you will consider reheated frozen dough an edible sponge. One two "kanapka" with butter and sliced fresh tomato for breakfast and you're ready for some action. Same story with meat - you're into cooking (like me) so definitely go to the butcher for a better quality. I can only speak for me and my friends but there's a pattern to do most of groceries in supermarkets because of pricing but meat, veggies people tend to prefer those local shops/stands. Go to the bazar and spend some money there, you won't regret it.
What do you mean we don't have vegetables in our cuisine? What do you think all the slavs you like are made of :D? All the most popular national polish dishes are made predominantly with vegetables. Pierogi, bigos, barszcz, gołąbki etc. And it's very rare for polish people to eat any kind of meat without a slav or some kind of cabbage salad. It's part of the culture. Polish people are pretty much cabbage addicts :P.
one tip, don't buy whole chicken in biedronka, it often is poorly sealed due to its shape and spoils even before reaching your house or even cart, biedronka leaves it out like it's no problem. I'm talking from my own experience.
you should try bread from small bakery, there is huge difference in bread quality from biedronka and normal bakery and its not going bad as fast as theirs
Jez you used one of the weirdest biedronka in Kraków to show it off. It is really close to the biggest campus in Poland (campus of AGH). It is tiny and has a slightly different range of products that are more desired by students. Great shop though. If you need better quality, you need to go to a specialty store. There are a number of fish stores, meat stores and bakeries around every corner.
If you are still in Krakow try to find Bacówka! One is in Galeria Krakowska, ham is there so awesome, like this supermarket ham you got will get goes after eating ham from Bacówka😂 the price per kg will be quite the same, off course you can get more pricier ham there but oh the taste! Try the beef ham it’s delicious! Other much better option than the packed ham from biedronka is the ham from the meat counter in carrefour. Another good place to shop food is Stary Kleparz, it’s behind plac Matejki, next to the academy of fine arts. You can find a lot of local made foods there like cheese and kiełbasa. We leave two streets from there and shop not as much as we should do there😅 ah and bread! Next to start Kleparz you can find the bakery Piec, try the bread on the sour base it tastes like the bread our grandmothers made! Biedronka is fine but that will make you just crave bread! Try it with butter and a little bit of salt, this is how our mothers and grandmothers ate it, it’s perfect. Have fun!😊
When it comes to stores in Poland, in Biedronka and Lidl (and even in Żabka) you can have discounts and promotions on certain products (or even a price discount on the entire receipt) if you have an application - something like a loyalty card. A useful thing, I recommend it. PS. Your "Good morning" in Polish sounded nice when you entered Żabka. Could you say something in Polish more often in your films? Regards :)
I buy almost all needed products (especially vegetables and fruits) on the bazaar. The quality is much better than in supermarkets. I buy bread in little bakeries and meat in local, trusty (and tested) places. So basically, I try not to buy food in the supermarkets. Maybe it's cheaper there but the quality is lower. Unfortunately, the supermatkets are taking over the market and the local businesses are being closed all the time. I try to support the latter ones but it seems to be futile...
Wes, since you are lactose intolerant, older cheeses have less lactose, fresh cheese like mozzarella has more lactose. Also lactase enzyme pills work really well.
I miss visiting Poland, tbh Im scared of taking a flight over there since Russia had several times cancelled out the GPS system over Östersjön several times now. I highly recommend Gdansk & Sopot🏖️. Great video😊
I remember tge 80's Once we got meat on the market. No cooling. Not packet. Flies laying eggs on the meat. Also you got the chicken with all the feathers. Yes I know how to pull chicken feather out and that you can burn the rest of the feathers with fire. I have only been in Poland for vacation during my childhood, so those stores feel very wierd for me.
This is not a farmer's market. 9 out of 10 times, It is a regular shop that is sourcing all veggies and fruits from a local wholeseller market. It is not bad but it is a common miscoception that you support the farmers if you buy from a fruit/veggie kiosk instead of a shop. For most of the time, you aren't. It is possible, though, to see people selling fresh vegetable stright from a truck or a simple stand stall, but that usually happens in smaller cities, maybe outskirts of bigger ones
If you like tea, try specialty shops like Five o'clock (there's one in Galeria Krakowska and one in the M1 mall, maybe there are some other locations, too). You'll get a great selection of leafed teas from different regions, much better stuff than in supermarkets.
Self-checkout counters have built-in scales, so you don't need to weigh items somewhere else. Just place, for example, the carrots on the counter and select from the menu what you've bought.

I didn't realize they're ok with you putting multiple different veggies/fruit in the same plastic bag, if you put all the price stickers on it. But it's irrelevant, since the better way to save plastic is to bring your own reusable bags (usually mesh bags, so they don't weigh too much).
Buy unprocessed products in local shops, they are of much better quality (usually). In Poland we also have local markets or market halls, where you will find all local products in one place. Something you won't find in the supermarket is, among others, home-made sauerkraut or low-salt cucumbers.
If you buy bread in some local bakery, it will be much better than supermarket one and usually will be good to eat for whole week. Supermarket bread is much more processed, and usually deep frozen before they sell it. Local bakery is a bit more expensive, but less processed, especially sourdough. And regarding to Auchan and weighting products. It is much easier than in other shops, as price tags have little number in bottom right corner, it is the same number of the article that you can also find on scale, so you do not need to search through pictures, you ust find correct number. In Kaufland they put products in alphabetical order, but in polish of course.
This bread that you buy from discount markets is processed before (prebaked and frozen and baked again in the shop), that's why it is cheap and it is not so good for you, believe me. When it's fresh, it's crunchy and tasty, but one day later it's dry and uneatable. Real polish bread needs the sourdough to make it and would cost about 10-15 zlotys per loaf, but it can last for about a week and still be quite good. It will be still quite humid. All this ready to eat food in these markets should be considered as a junkfood. If you want to stay healthy just avoid. Of course it can be tasty, but you should consider it as an last on option to choose, just in case emergency, last available food etc. If you want a good quality bread, just go to the local bakery, there is still plenty of them, and they offer a big variety.
Nie mam takich problemów z pieczywem z Kauflanda czy Lidla. Parę dni temu kupiłam pieknie wyglądające, staropolskie bułki w pewnej niezbyt taniej piekarni i na drugi dzień były jak guma, totalnie niejadalne. Wszyscy strasznie demonizują pieczywo z odpieku, ale ono wcale nie jest aż takie złe. Na pewno lepsze niż pieczywo przemysłowe sprzedawane w mniejszych, lokalnych sklepach, w szczególności te krojone chleby w plastikowych opakowaniach.
Like other people mentioned, i do not recommend buying bread in these supermarkets. Better go to bakeries or try quality shops like FRAC, if you have one near you.
We eat many vegetables. Some are hard to find in any other country, like the horseradish,parsley root, celery root, beetroot,sauerkraut,salted cucumbers and turnip cabbage, sorrel.
do you have problem with unrefridgerated eggs? Some Americans do not trust them. To be honest, I do not really trust them and prefer to buy them in shops where there they put them in the fridge.
Lidl and Biedronka are the cheapest, and they have good products, of their own brands. If you like sweets, Lidl has good dopes of sweets from common brands (Mars/Kraft/Ferrero etc.) for a half price.
With the bread is the opposite what you think. Polish bread is very good as are breads in most of Europe. It is the USA that's famous for **not** knowing how to make a plain bread (and cheese for that matter). You make great meat stuff (honey ribs I had in Kirkland, WA were the beast meat I've eaten in my life) but have no clue about bread and cheese.
couldn't agree more on Biscoff, I didn't even know they sell them in Poland, I tried them when I was in London a couple of weeks ago and my friend told me that I can buy them in Poland. It is a shame that you live far away from Auchan, great shop , I have one 6 minutes away.
Next year I go retired and move to Poland. I'll live full month for money I'd pay in NYC for Medicare. It's cheap country for living. No mention safe. Only gas is more expensive, a lot. But car insurance is 1/10 what I pay in NY, so I'll be even.
@WheresWes you can freeze bred in freezer. I usually buy the same bread you pointed - "fitness" is the best one. Just cut in half and take a peace out 20-30 minutes before using. Half is ok for 2 meals so one in the morning and remaining for supper. Never buy already minded meat (unless they mince it when you are freshly) otherwise you never know whats inside. Another tip. dont buy meat in biedronka. Yes its cheap there but their meat is full of chemistry. Wow, you spend a lot for groceries. For me + my gf we spend 200-250pln per week in total.
You should go to Lewiatan - Żabka is not that good XD Things are definitely more expensive especially ever since the war in Ukraine started. Regarding food: you should definitely try pierogi. As well, we have local grocery stores pretty much at each corner - they are just like the Delis in NYC. But for real - instead of Biedronka go to Lidl and especially Lewiatan - both are cheaper. As well - get yourself a frequent customer card for each store - this way you’ll get discounts which can actually save you a great deal of money Regarding meat: the best is in Mogilany - you can take the bus from Borek Fałęcki - 275 or 245, and go there Regarding veggies - there are actually quite a lot of them in Polish cuisine, but you need to look at the recipes, and not necessarily in the restaurants
