Assam is lovely malty tea. Yorkshire is a realy good all rounder. Knackered comes from historical use, when a horse becomes too old or exhausted to work it was sent to be destroyed at the knackers yard. Knackers is also a colloquialism for testicles.

Speaking of tea, does anyone else remember Brooke Bond Dividend tea? It came in an orange coloured box and had a detachable stamp on it, you took the stamp and stuck it onto a card, when the card was full it had a redeemable value of 10 bob. This was 1950's early 60's.

Cream Crackered is unfair. It's a slang term for a slang word. 1000000 points for effort. Yorkshire Tea.
@stevet7695
@stevet7695 2 года назад
Not dahn 'ere mate. Cream Crackered has always meant knackered. Knackered is not slang being the past tense of the word knacker which has been in English since the 16th century. Although having had several meanings over time, in the 18th century it could refer to a worn out horse as the "knacker" was the horse slaughterer. So the word also came to mean tired or worn out. Cockney rhyming slang originated in East London in the early 19th century as a form of code preventing eavesdropping in response to the formation of the Metropolitan Police in 1829. Cream Crackers were first produced by William Jacob's bakery in 1885. It is believed the term was adopted around 30 years ago as rhyming slang no longer serves its original purpose but is now used solely by Lunnerners to confuse American tourists.

Pg tips, knackered comes from when horses were put down, they were taken to the abattoir or knackers yard, and the horse was knackered and it became common phrase for tired. I was told off by my English teacher in the early 80s for using it to describe how I felt after a race.

Fun fact 1938 the first ballpoint pen. 'Biro' was the name of the inventor, László Bíró, a Jewish Hungarian journalist. Frustrated by the inconvenience of fountain pens, he wanted to make a pen that used quick drying printers' ink. The ink would be delivered to a ball bearing point and would write dry without the need to blot.

Reputedly comes from the Countess Grey in Howick Northumberland, because the water there was 'hard' (had a lot of limestone in it) someone thought that it would be good to counter it with a mixing with the oil of bergamot. You can visit the delightful Gardens of Howick Hall and drink tea in the tea rooms there, they also serve the most amazing home made cakes. The Hall is still a family home, so you cannot tour the Hall itself. The Earl Grey was actually Charles, the 2nd Earl Grey, and was the British Prime Minister in the 1830's.

Skint: also “Boracic” (rhyming slang, “Boracic Lint”=“Skint”). Boracic lint is/was a medicated bandage, absorbent cloth, but impregnated with Borax, an antiseptic. Ta does mean thank you, but interestingly, “ta-ta” means goodbye, while ta-tas” (as in “We are going for ta-tas”) means a walk. “Bog standard” and “Dog's Bollocks” both come from Meccano, which once came in two versions of the kit: “Box Standard” and “Box deluxe”. Bog standard is a fairly obvious derivation, while with “Box deluxe”, you just have to reverse the initials, to ““Dox Beluxe”, before it becomes clear. Laszlo Biro invented the ball-point pen. Although it is now a brand, we call all of them biros after him. Bic is a French brand of biros, but we never use the term generically, because it is French, and nor should the US, because everybody hates the French. Co-operative Indian Prince Tea.

Your derivation for bog standard doesn’t match the entry in the Oxford English Dictionary, which says its derivation is uncertain. I think your explanation for this and “dog’s bollocks” is folk etymology, and probably incorrect.

Many people fail to understand that Rhyming Slang can and will be encountered all over the UK. Cockney Rhyming Slang is just a version of the slang that became common parlance in one small part of London at one time. But other or alternative versions of rhyming slang can be encountered almost everywhere in the UK. English as spoken in the UK is an extremely flexible and no people in the world are more skilled at mangling the English language than the British. One might even describe it as an attempt to confuse the enemy, be they upper-class numpties, non-natives and even fellow countrymen who hail from another part of the country. ;-)

To answer the specific question as to 'brand', I'd probably say Whittard or Twinings, but I think he perhaps was leaning more towards meaning 'type' with mentioning breakfast teas and Earl Grey. One type I would suggest is Assam, which is quite strong and malty. The other is Russian caravan, which is again quite full-bodied but this time slightly smoky (due to there being some lapsang souchong in it). With the word "Ta", it's also used extensively in parts of the west country as well (eg Gloucestershire, Somerset etc) and probably into south Wales also
