Young Romani-Americans are trying to blend into American culture. Alex Eli, 18, is negotiating a bride price for his future wife but he also plans to graduated from high school.
Our lost brothers from Rajasthan, India. I can understand a quarter of Romani words as we use them till today. Ek, do trin , nak shir. lal maas , gao, laklo, lakli and all that. Also Roma had Indian names till 18th century One is Panna and another is Amos Bihari, a great musician from Eastern Europe. Roma purity codes are same as us like menstruating women avoiding kitchen. In a taxi in Paris, when I said "chhora ko phone" to my wife, The Gypsy driver understood Sara Kali is also Indian Goddess.
In the UK 🇬🇧Gypsy Weddings in the Victorian Era was a Hand fasting. They returned one year and a day later to say whether Zi marry you , I marry you , I marry you , or not. Very often in Scotland 🏴.
Do you think these could be the ones that were spoken of as the noble ones or the Aryans in ancient Indian writing? The ones that came from between the black and Caspian Sea? I'm pretty young but I'm just curious. So did people come from between the black and Caspian Sea down into Northern India? Did they Assimilate and then leave? The people that are spoken of in the Vedas
@@choice12ozborne I'm gypsy/romano and we are a lot in Bulgaria we believe that we traveled and leave from India and river Ganga or ghang I'm not sure how to spelling it 🤷🏻 we traveled so many centuries. And the closest to indian language and words that we keep in Bulgaria is. Pani/water maro / bread moro/mine. Toro/your. Baba/grandfather mama/grandmother chavo /child and many other words we keep the traditions like the bride have to be Virgin and we have the almost same weddings there's a lot of gypsy all around the world but in Bulgaria we are so much and we know where we are came from
And that’s the thing about America: despite all the America-bashing, here, people who are treated badly overseas literally CAN reach out and take the opportunities here as these families are encouraging their children to do. :-) We really DON’T care where you are from; we care what you do and we honor that.

You'll find that even before Egypt was Egypt and Rome was Rome that they were multiple different nations of people before that called something else entirely. What does that prove. That nationality is a man made construct. Hell, even look back to when we were cavemen. That proves that nationality is man made.

+BadRomaMan1 also if u think the migration of Gypsies from India is a make belief, then u need some good History lessons and a DNA test or some research in the Internet if u can't afford the other two
why are u confronting me as if i killed somebody u know :D, there is something called DNA testing too u know, we just try see that every one is related to us, no problem if u don't want to believe it or not, ROM people are certainly their own ethnically, besides its not like anybody is forcing u to become Indian, as a matter of fact most wont want that :) u guys left India over 1500 years ago u guys are definitely not Indians, but i am just pointing out who migrated from where , migration theories depend on DNA testing and not on somebodies personal beliefs, every body has the right to believe in his or her own theories
Well about DNA and emigration of Gypsies, since they have among they blad Asirian Arian and very rare only found among them R1a gene thay had to live India at the time off fall off Aria, but not 1500 years ago.And sice they were present in Byzantium they are defenetly European and not Indian.
Well you don't seem to be bothered using a name that is associated with tons of stereotypes that have barely anything to do with reality and usually means you're a nomadic thief.
if dropping out in the 8th grade is the norm how do they get all of the bling? anyway, the only interaction i ever had with a Roma was when i was living in Switzerland. the guy immediately tried to talk me into loaning him my bike, he said he would be right back, he just wanted to go get the keys to his boat. i declined to loan him my bike and complimented him on the try.

I hate to break to ya but many ethnic backgrounds did that. It was the way of the world back then. The problem was, that many others let those ways go but the gypsies held onto to them longer so they developed a very bad reputation.
They are part of us. Our Lost pral and Pena. I never met a Roma in my life but understand more than half their words. Ek do trin, chora. chori, laas maas, divas, bersh and so on. Our Indian brothers. "Tati" means hot in Romani. We in rajasthan, India now loosing this. Even Sara Kali is our Goddess.
+Tony Lyko Yes I am on facebook. My email is shree709@gmail.com. Even your proverbs are ours. A Roma proverb is that while selecting a daughter in law trust your ears more than your eyes meaning look for her reputation more than beauty. I remember my dad used to say this. Also Roma lady does not go to kitchen during certain days of her periods. We do the same. You break a plate when dog locks it, my mom used to do the same. You are our lost pra and pena. No doubt. Even great Roma musician's name Bihari is Indian. His daughter was Panna which is a feminine name in Rajasthan meaning saphire.
+BadRomaMan1 you are certainly not stupid and I know Romani language has picked up many words from where Roma moved into Europe. example you call road as drost which is Greek. what about chora chori DIVAS bersh yak naak gia sov tu mhe hiv chiri sassu sussro saalo saali dai kaki kakosa tati ek do trin and so on. do you honestly believe that words can travel on their own without the humans using them.50% maybe an exaggeration but 50 percent maybe n exaggeration but we do understand your words. also realise that your words are as they were spoken in Rajasthan during 11th century and we know today's words which are little different example you use hiv for snow which is him in Sanskrit .Himalaya is home of snow.today we use barf also which is Persian. your words are those used before arrival of Muslims in to India after which some Persian and Arabic words were added to our language but yours is free from this. what about names like Bihari and Panna. what about purity codes which I mentioned before what about Sara Kali why don't you give your views on these. I am a factory owner of 63 years of age in India and have no interest in Roma except when I saw our maid of gypsy origin at home in India there after understand few words of Romani being spoken by Roma on BBC a few years ago. there after an there after an italian Roma gave me lot of words pl see his presentation on utube. also pl see on utube " Girl from Kosovo finds her roots in India" also DNA does not change so many in Europe today have the DNA of Genghis Khan which is widely reported and is embarrassing to Europeans. similarly you are DNA matches hrs even today I know a doctor in Jaipur who did such tests
I remember being a kid in Chicago, there were a lot of Gypsys that moved in on Roosevelt Rd. by Kedzie ave. they lived in what used to be small stores, the woman wore colorfull clothes and the young men dressed like the rest of us and were a little darker skin color, they looked like they could have been Mexican, I can remember every now and then the man they called the King of the Gypsys would drive by in a chauffeured Cadillac. We had an interesting neighborhood, Italians, Mexicans, Blacks, Jews, everything but most were living in there own neighborhoods. this was in the middle to late 40's. enjoy.

Bargaining over the purchase of a child bride and the ingrained rejection of Western education isn't necessarily what I'd call "progressive and favorable light". It actually highlight the huge cultural gap separating the Gipsy community from everyone else.
This is not your culture and you do not understand. Traditional Rom women want to be betrothed by mid teens. And, Rom kids forced into western "education" frequently get a 3rd rate education with developmentally delayed children - hardly an education in the normal sense.

The challenge I see as a person of Rroma descent is that if we are third generation or so and wish to integrate back into Rroma society, we are not necessarily welcome, because we are discriminated against. It works both ways. Acceptance is key to everything!
There is also a real stigma to transcend... to do this we must have courageous pioneers.. Now! Make the impression on humanity and Country.. with courage in the face of others.. realize it takes genuine effort to qualify and endure all the risks and dangers that the world has. Be wise prudent survivors. It doesn't mean running and hiding.
Does Gadjo mean the samthing as Gorger. I know Spanish Gypsy call outsiders Gacho. Im Mexican and Salvadoran and according to my father my Great Grand father was a Roma Gypsy from Portugal but my grandfather became a Salvadoran and all gypsy culture is lost in my family.
Let me share this. Progress is like 'growing to self' and that's great but don't get too away from the culture or else a person could find themselves walking about in life feeling "why do I feel this way and they don't". ;)
They look Latino (South American), Indian and Italian all at once. My husband is Italian and I always tell him he looks Indian. His last name is Romano too, after watching this and reading the comments, now I think he has Gypsy blood. And I'm Dominican, born in DR, but obviously have Spanish blood. And there are Spanish gypsies. I feel I might also have this too. It would make a lot of sense. And I have the gift, along with many other spiritual gifts and am very attracted to Indian culture. I practice yoga, but spiritually. I meditate. I've had a visitation from Krishna. I thought all of my gifts came from my African side and my Taína (Indigenous) side. But, maybe not. So interesting!
i had done my ancestry dna test and i found out that im a roma irish travelers mix god if i had known when i was younger i wouldnt of drove my family crazy by asking all the time when i was younger also im from america btw isnt life grand im so happy :)
Beautiful people still keep their genetic intact looking like their ancestors. Some times all the discrimination and abuse make a group more homogenous and stronger we need nomads tribes and archaic one to learn how to survive in the future. Human guarded patrimony they should be treasured!
They are Indians. There is this misconception that gypsies (roma / sinti) are from Romania, but they are originally from the Punjab and Rajasthan regions in India.

Many Romany Gypsies live in North America. We have, like most of our heritage, found a halfway point between Roma and Gadge culture. While I respect Ian Hancock and all of his work, I also fear that he is trying to keep us in the past. Romanipen, like kosher is an important cultural aspect that unites us and to a certain extent, divides us. We need to maintain our culture and especially Romanes but we need to embrace education, while maintaining the non sexist parts of our culture. As a half Rom, I feel that I have little right to speak but....
I had to assimilate... The Hungarian government forcibly put me up for international (code for intercontinental) adoption, so I was raised transracially White by people who are of obviously White European-descent, but weren’t Hungarian, though. I had just enough exposure to my adoptive cultures of French, Irish & German to be proud of them, but grew-up with a very limited concept of race, let alone any knowledge of own full-blooded Roma ancestry. Still, I’m grateful that got I to grow-up simply as a typical American and not some walking cliche. (I have other friends who were internationally & transracially adopted, and they grew-up with super strict sub-cultures here in the States, especially heavily imposed religious stuff; that, or they just walk around like a real racist caricature of a White Italian or something because that’s how they were raised.)

Could they have mixed/bred with Europeans ? But their culture prevents them from mixing... so I am quite intrigued how their skin tones just changed.. over time
Its not wanted of Roma to get mixed with Gadje (non Gypsies) but of course it happened from time to time. Mostly Romani Men intermarried with Gadje women. And some Roma groups like Sinti in western europe got to know white nomadic folks like the yenish people of switzerland who were persecuted too and some intermarried with this Yenish people. Other Roma groups like the Romanichals in Great Britain met the irish traveller a white nomadic folk (like swiss yenish) and intermarried with them.

I am a Gypsy, that is who God made me and I am not ashamed. The stereotypes that has plagued our heritage is still alive and thrives in people of ignorance! There are so many different cultures in the world and each culture has its share of thieves, liars, and murderers. So how is it fair that we Gypsy's are being condemned as a whole for the few who commit crimes. You who hate us I feel sorry for you. My mother passed away about 5 years ago she would have lived if her doctor would have diagnosed her correctly but unfortunately that wasn't the case. So am I to hate all white people because this white doctor did not do his job correctly? Its time to stop all the racial discrimination in America, how are we ever going to move forward if we keep looking back. How does this glorify God by casting insults and threats at a particular person because of his/her ethnic back round. By reading some of these post I can see that racism is never going to be a thing of the past.
You wonder why these stereotypes are still applied to you? How about this: Because you keep using the term "gypsy!" Instead of disassociating yourself from that term, you use it and thereby give it and its stereotypes legitimacy.
Like all peoples who settle in America, as much as they may cling to their old values, they are eventually absorbed into the mainstream culture. The mainstream allure is just too strong to resist. On the whole I don't think that's bad. In fact that's exactly what makes this country the superior country of the world. By superior I mean we are because we ARE everybody from all over the world. This creates a dynamism that can't be topped anywhere else.
Please see "Romani girl from Kosovo goes to India to discover her roots" where she is amazed by the familiar words in the markers of Delhi and the DNA results.
The gypsies are everywhere, it seems. They seem like a fascinating group of people. I like their music very much. It seems like they are in India, all over Europe, in the states, in Canada, and in Brazil. They have travelled a lot. Many of the gypsies in the states look like ordinary white people, as I have watched those gypsy shows on TV. It seems absolutely pathetic how people in Europe and possibly in the states have hated them. It is also sad how they have been treated in Europe.
+Shawn G : I'm a Euro-American with some Gypsy heritage and I haven't faced any problems of bigotry against my "Gypsyness" - I don't count the internet. Both Europe and India have been bad to us in the past, culminating in genocide by the World War II German Nazis. Today's Europe could do a better job at assimilating Gypsies, yet Gypsy bands must make an effort to become absorbed into the mainstream. It's hard to be liked when you're forced to survive by committing acts of thievery. My Gypsy ancestors ultimately did a good job, because their descendants became productive members of American society.
+shree prakash Loya : Firstly, I love India and Indians, and love having Indian roots. I must clarify my statement about India being bad to Gypsies. There are at least a couple of theories as to why the Gypsies migrated out of India. The first is that Gypsies came from the Jats (a tribe of Northern India) that were expelled from India about 900 years ago, because of religious wars. Another theory is that Gypsies left on their own accord around 900 years ago, because they were tired of being treated as inferiors in Indian society. Either way, it was so long ago as to have any relevance regarding attitudes towards one another.
+JeffGR4 they are mostly rajputs a warrier class second in hierarchy after Brahmins. no question of bad treatment to them. they were tired sold iers of the army of king Prithviraj chauhan of Ajmer India and left in 1050 west. some came south. that r still here. u can understand them. I am from north but live in south. I have a Roma maid and know their words.
+shree prakash Loya : Warrior class - I like the sound of that! Thanks a lot for that information, I always thought my Romani ancestors were considered some kind of undesirables in the caste system of India, but it's great to learn that they were actually brave, strong men that were venerated. In keeping with that warrior tradition, my great uncle (also of Romani descent) was a member of the U.S. Army's 82nd Airborne Division that fought the Germans in World War II.
One reason some Roma appear more European is because of periods of active assimilation policies to 'breed out' Roma in some location - including England, where children were removed from their families and it was illegal for Roma to marry each other. Therefore it stands to reason some Roma no longer appear Indian, or even remotely South Asian.
@@abee1559 Yes, your observation is correct! The gypsies ancestors the Dom tribe( hence Rom or plural Roma) went out from the Indian subcontinent a 1000 years ago and first settled in the middle-east. It was then that the various tribes: Dom, Banjara, Chauhan, Sikligar, Lohar, Dhangar, Kalbeliya-that had left the subcontinent began to mix with Iranians, Kurds and Arabs and there they formed the Roma people and culture! Their identity was formed in the middle-east! The tribes that had remained in India are not Roma themselves!
@BadRomaMan1djala michto😊👍 Thank you very much I am happy to learn more about our community in the United States personally I love this country I have already gone on vacation 3 times to the United States in Los Angeles Miami and New York but I have not had the opportunity to meet gipsies personally in France we have rights and aid from the French State but it is true that there are certain things that we cannot do as we want for example most of the gypsies Roma in France travel in a caravan but the French government wants us to stop circulating in a caravan so there is a large majority of gypsies who have stopped circulating in a caravan to live in a house all year round there is another thing that is complicated in France for us gypsies is that we cannot practice our religion as we want then cause United States you can speak of God or you want as you want without you being stopped by the police we in France the vast majority of gypsies Rome its ch retien evangelist it happens that we make great gathering with 20 miles caravan and a huge tent to be able to make our meeting with the biggest pastor of Europe gypsy evangelists but often the French prevents us from doing it is great gathering in the open air but the positive thing in France is that we have the same help as any French citizen for example if someone does not work or who have no money it is the French State which pays all its medical expenses and we can have a small salary of 500 € per month what is positive in France.

Even the former French president Nicholas Sarkozy is of Roma-Gypsy origin from his father side! His father fleed Hungary in 1945, when the Soviets invaded Hungary! Sarkozi is a typical gypsy name in Hungary!
Is he? What is your source for that claim? You see as far as I know his father was an Hungarian aristocrat and the family fled Hungary in 1944, returned in 1945 and then he fled to France via Austria and Germany. Or are you claiming that he is "Roma-Gypsy" because of his family name? So Rosenberg is an old "gypsy name" in Germany, does that mean that Alfred Rosenberg was a gypsy? Weiss is a very common "gypsy name" in Germany, does that mean that Vincent Weiss is of that ancestry? Or how about everyone called Wagner? Or Reinhard for that matter?

my question to all the gypsie people , why don't many gypsies look more like the peoples from this video and look european , i mean u guys are supposed to be Indo-aryans ethnically, or are some other european nomadic groups also misunderstood as gypsies, or was it because of intermixing with peoples from different parts of the world, PS: i dont mean any disrespect in any ways, i am an Indian too
+Aishik Das Its actually quite complicated because we come various castes in India to begin with, and if you visit India, you will find various types of appearences, from dark skinned to green eyed. Add in mixing, and of course, there non-Romani groups that are also called gypsies, which is why I hate the term, gypsies are not Rom they are redheaded irish travellers, that see their way life as being gypsy, not their langauge, etc.
exactly, thing is we are rom, those gazhe call themselves gypsies, just like in the movie snatch. It took me a while to get it, that these people were not rom, they were just gazhe that call themselves gypsies. My grandmother was mistaken for being black in the USA, she was that dark, while I am lighter than she was, but not close to being redhaired, although other rom do consider me pretty light.
