For a list of the materials we used for our various US History units, you can check out this blog post which lists all the books and resources as well as approximate ages and grades for each resource. I share a few thoughts on each resource as well.

This unit was a special request from my 13-year-old son in the fall of 2019. We had only recently completed a more extensive US History unit in 2016 which included several pockets of American history. We completed these smaller units, but didn't get through all of them the first time in 2016. While we usually do our history units in the winter when we do a lot more reading, we chose to do several mini units at the start of the school year. This took quite a bit of planning and a lot of staying on task to complete the work we set out to do. In addition to some nature science units (Whales and Sea Turtles), we completed 3-4 history units in just 5 weeks! Usually our history units last twice as long for one unit! But I'm actually really pleased with the outcome and wonder if these smaller more intense units are the way to go.
For our small American Revolution unit study which span only about 20 years of US history, we read some read alouds together, I assigned some reading material to my son and we scheduled just a couple big projects that actually took longer than the unit. But that's okay. My son ended up working on his knitted sock, hat and weaving project throughout all the fall units.
Check out the blog post that accompanies our American Revolution Unit Study.

So I was looking for books for my up and coming kindergartener on America history. I remembered specifically one of the first books I selected from the library at my elementary school on my own the picture book series. I specifically remember that those books somehow inspired my love of biographies and history. I was not even going to try to figure out the title or make of the books but when I saw this video I was estactic!! Thank you for sharing these hopefully my child enjoys them as I did. Jazak Allah Khair

This will be my first time homeschooling (on my own, without a certified teacher overseeing me). My kids are now in 2nd-4th grade and I'd like to do history altogether, but I'm not sure at all where to start! I fear being repetitive for my older one and fear skipping info for my youngest. Also not sure what span of time I should cover per year. AHH! PLEASE HELP! lol

Don't fear! You are your child's best teacher! Maybe some picture books for both your 2nd & 4th graders and add some additional chapter books for the 4th grader that go a little deeper into the subject matter? Some people start with ancient history and go through to modern times, but it may also be helpful to start with a history of the country your children are most familiar with. Take note of what they respond well to and head in that direction. You got this!

How much time during the day do you spend reading out-loud? Fiction and non-fiction? Just curious :)

I like to aim for an hour, but that's not consistent. We read more in the winter and less in the spring and very little in the summer.

Do you do any units on the First Nations?

Yes, only one, but I haven't released it yet. It's coming up, but I don't know how good the resources are now that I'm reevaluating my content.
