American Hustle (Starring Jennifer Lawrence & Christian Bale) Movie Review 

A movie that wants to narratively pretend it's Goodfellas, and aesthetically pretend it's Boogie Nights. And never, ever coming close to being as good as either film.

Even with 12 Years A Slave, Gravity, Her, and Wolf of Wall Street, this was still hands down the best movie of 2013. I loved every single second of this film.

Man, I'm hearing so much good things about it. Silver Linings Playbook was the best film of 2012. This is different, but it's David O. Russell again. It must be good!

Overhyped. It felt like David O. Russell cut together a bunch of improv exercises, and then I read later that's exactly what he did, and what little plot there was fizzled. If he gets a screenwriting award at the Oscars, it's a travesty.

This is better Scorsese movie than Wolf of Wall Street. Wolf could had been a clip show of old Scorsese movies and DiCaprio movies. Definitely not noteworthy movie, DiCaprio deserved awards but this one is just grind for him.

I felt like the movie's main goal was to be likable and fun, and I don't think it's a particularly deep movie or one that the audience will connect with, and while I still liked it, I think the high high praise for it is undeserved.

As an American, I wish they would stop putting the word "American" in the titles of movies. Usually those movies suck.

I give up on What the Flick. I think they are sometimes paid to give good and bad reviews. American Hustle is the most overrated bore feast of the year. All the actors are fantastic, but the pace is horrendous. It is blasphemy to call this a Scorsese movie. Christy talks about the camera work, as in the camera knows when to push in. That is because the whole damn film is in close ups. The Wolf of Wall Street is the most entertaining movie of the year.

Even though I liked it, the biggest problem I had with American Hustle was that the plot was so damn thin which means that there's no way it should be as long as it is - it's completely about the performances. The performances are great - Bradley Cooper is my favorite - Amy Adams is fantastic too but Cooper was the biggest surprise for me. Goodfellas [and Boogie Nights, which is a more obvious touchstone for this I think] had an actual solid story plot that justifies its length. :)

I was disappointed in this. Acting and style was great but story I felt was lacking.

Saw this movie, and I was very pleased with it. Not sure what people went into it expecting or thought it was trying to be. I didn't see this in the same vein as Casino or Goodfellas. I saw it as a comedy, perhaps as they said a dark comedy, but a comedy none the less. I think it would be more apt to compare it to Oceans 11 or Catch me if you can rather than Goodfellas. If you have no wits at all and need heavy heavy exposition, please just watch 3 minute cartoons and give up movies. There was nothing complicated about this movie, and the people I went to watch it with like a few in this comment section have left me disappointed in terms of people's comprehension skills. The movie is really straight forward and simple. Almost to a fault. My only criticism of the movie is that it did stretch a bit long, and the opening act was pretty slow and kind of struggled to establish its identity. With that being said I really liked this movie, it wasn't a 9.8 like these clowns suggested. It was an enjoyable character driven dark comedy with amazing actors. I would definitely recommend it (as long as you have some brain function I guess). I'd probably watch it again because it was so enjoyable. Jennifer Lawrence shows the depth of her acting abilities, and quite frankly I think most of the cast did as well. 7.5/10

the best scene is the first scene its so funny, after that i kinda dont remember much else

Matt Atchity and I are in complete agreement here (and I was flanked by two people that loved it as well). It's a strange feeling to like a movie this much but still have problems with it. Knowing the Scorsese movies O'Russell cribs from doesn't help. It makes it easy to zero in on what's missing, and that's the lack of heft.

I didn't like this movie. It did a really bad job of explaining itself and the ending was rushed. And way too many sideboobs for no reason

This movie looks fantastic, I plan to see it. I love Jennifer Lawrence but she shouldn't be topped billed on the title should she?

ABSCAM destroyed one of my favorite Senators, Harrison Williams. He'd been a neighbor of my family in Westfield, NJ, and his son was a year ahead of me in Westfield HS. He was also the guy who led the effort to fix the original M-16, which led to chroming the chamber and adding a forward assist. Was he guilty? Probably. Did he do anything then that is not done every single day by almost every office holder in a federal or state-wide position now? Not a chance in hell. Times have changed, and now Corporations are people. Money talks and the people walk.

Jennifer is great,she's getting a lot of buzz, and I understand from a search term perspective why you would her name in the title, but no way should she be top billing for this film considering how much screen time she actually has.

People think The Dark Knight Rises is overrated? This is the most overrated movie ever (along with Gravity). It's a good movie with amazing performances, but it's a one time viewing for me. I liked The Wolf of Wall Street better

When it works well Hustle is great. My only problem is that it occasionally feels kind of unfocused.

American Hustle was really good but I don't think it's quite as good as The Departed or Goodfellas. American Hustle just didn't feel as realistic as those movies

I have a feeling that I'm going to agree with Matt more in regards to this film. I also feel like I will enjoy The Wolf of Wall Street more, but I am pretty partial to Scorsese so we will see!

Matt and Alonso seem uncomfortable with each other on the set. Matt more so!

Do I have to be American to like this film or something? I find the narrative boring and I felt myself forcing to become interested in this film because the critics rated it. The acting was good, yes, I realise that, but there's no point in good acting when the situation is average. Also, for a supposed comedy, I barely laughed once. Very disappointed by this film.

So overrated o every level. I felt like I was watching kids playing adults. No one fit. The makeup, clothes and performances all felt off enough that I couldn't suspend disbelief. I was watching them have more fun making the movie than I did watching it. Why did critics cream themselves over this movie so much?

Anchorman 2 is set in the 80s

Instead of seeing this right after Wolf on Wall Street, I viewed it immediately before, to much the same effect. (It was far overshadowed by the brilliance of Wow). I also agree with alonzo's points regarding the underlying message in that movie, whereas the other hosts didn't quite understand.

I liked this movie but I didn't love it. Completely over hyped. Jennifer Lawrence as a disgruntled wife was a big stretch. I liked Silver Linings Playbook way better!

Looks great. Goodfellas is one of my favorite films of all time, so if this is even remotely close to it, I will have a lot of fun. + Christian Bale is finally doing a more comical, insane role again. This is when he is at his best, in my opinion.

For as good as the performances in this movie are, I felt a little let down by everything else.

I was so ready to love this movie. Love all the actors and the director and even the film scorer. The whole thing felt contrived and awkward. I didn't know who to root for and I didn't care. The acting was pretty good for the most but I was not invested in any of it. I kept waiting for someone to die but that doesn't even happen. I didn't even find it funny but maybe that was because of the theater I was in.

The way I look at it is, movies don't have to have violence, sex, language or a good soundtrack for it to be entertaining to me.

That America has created the word 'sideboob', speaks volumes about repression. The Europeans must laugh in bemusement, as they enjoy a light snack of Brie and Blue is the Warmest Colour.

Matt is wrong to watch American Hustle in comparison to Goodfellas and Casino. It is not the same movie. Watch American Hustle. Don't watch it constantly thinking "It didn't do this like Goodfellas did." It really is not trying. Its not a remake.

In photos, I thought the characters looked like gangsters, not that this was a political movie.

It borrows A LOT from Goodfellas, but it is NOWHERE NEAR as good.

i liked it overall. the ending was pretty weak, but visually it really drops you right in the times. interesting to see bale as the lovable loser. jeniffer lawrence was stunningly beautiful and louis ck stole every scene he was in. great acting across the board

This is one of my favorite movies because of its energy and cast. The cast is one of the best I've ever seen.

I really liked this movie, probably the best of 2013 with Gravity (although I haven't seen Wolf Of W. and 12 years yet). I don't understand the hatred. The movie is great.

I have a question about the whole bank CD's scam bit, as this was the only thing I was unclear about when I watched the movie earlier today. I know roughly what bank CD's (Certificates of deposit) are, but I'm not sure why Elway thought the fake sheikh would want them and how they would help the fake sheikh. I'm also unsure how fake bank CD's are connected to fake and stolen art dealing. If someone could help me to understand this it would be much appreciated. Also, RIP Phillip Seymour Hoffman a true legend of cinema.

got so bored watching this, didn't go anywhere and I expected so much better.

Call me crazy - I thought Amy Adams was the only non-good performance here. Other than her fashion she was wooden. Everyone else was amazing.

American Hustle is forgettable... Really Over-Hyped !!!

I'm not going to talk about this movie, instead I'll talk about why I don't like Goodfellas. I haven't seen it for a while (about 2 years maybe) but I think it't too long, and Ray Liotta just doesn't sell it for me. I don't like him at all. I love Casino a lot more (it's actually one of my favorite movies) because it's more about the inner workings of the mob, and it has a lot more flash and character. Goodfellas takes on too much for it's own good imo. It want's to be Godfather and Scafrace at the same time, but because the story is split amongst 3 characters it sort of looses it's weight for me and doesn't let the characters develop naturally. And in that respect Scarface is a lot better (which is also oneof my favorite movies) mainly because it only focuses on Tony. Goodfellas is still a very good movie, don't get me wrong, I just feel it's a bit overrated.

I did not get the love for this movie. It was good but to compare it to Goodfellas is ridiculous. The only performance that was consistent and excellent was Christian Bale. Amy Adams was good but she didnt catch up to the complexity of the character. Bradley Cooper was OK but the weakest out of the cast. I said this once and I will say it again: What is it with the obsession with Jennifer Lawrence? Seriously. She is not amazing to me at all and her performance in this was arguably worthy of her nomination, but outstanding? No. This movie was overrated, I gave it 3 1/2 out of 5 stars.

liked it a fair bit more than silver linings playboy, thought amy adams and christina bale stole the show, Bradley cooper was better than usual too, jennifer lawrences character didn't seem like a real person, comparable to a character put on by a fake-reality tv actress like on of those real housewives shows so i wasen't to impressed by her, but i don't think it was her fault alone

American Hustle was nothing special, a 7.8 at best, no reason to ever watch it again. David ORussel is a hack. This is the worst review I have seen from this group.

Jennifer Lawrence's FAKE MANUFACTURED "I'm just a normal person like you" persona.. pisses me off sooo much. No one in her position would just simply decide to go all "normal girl" without first running it by her PR and then getting a favourable outlook. I prefer if she was just a normal hollywood celebrity, atleast that's real.

Alonso Duralde should be removed from the panel from just comparing the movie to Goodfellas. He obviously does not know what he's talking about. He just kissing Hollywood ass. This film is circle jerk of mediocrity with just big names. It's weak characters, unmotivated scenes, lack of climatic moments, and a narrative mess. It's not funny, not a good movie... These critics are just following in line with the Hollywood insiders... Please get some alternative view points, that is what makes good critical thinking.
