That's what I loved about training with Sifu Carl Totten. He made very "difficult" Kenpo technique look and apply easy!

Excellent, this is why I like the art of Kenpo. Very effective stuff and sudden forceful movements to attain control over the opponent. Cause him pain and you will gain his respect. Also like how he is doing these techniques on a bigger guy that is most likely how it will be on the street. This isn't for the ring where there are weight classes. Also love that first lesson, especially that mid knuckle to the arm pit 😁

Thank you for sharing. Sort of deja vu for me. As David mentioned, it all depends on level of execution : timing, techinicality, angles used etc. Anyway, to make any of even these tecniques to work in real situations needs 5-7 years regular training, from techical training to free sparring, with a competent teacher plus training partner, who can take it. You need to take hit too. Anything else done or said is bullshit. You learn fighting and self defense only by fighting, combined with controlled hard training. I liked this old school stuff✌️

Couldn't agree more. Old school styles and traditional martial arts can not only work but can be very effective. But regardless of what critics might say it comes down to two things - you have to have good training and approach it the right way and a good teacher. And lots of sparring and experience is definitely needed. And it doesn't happen overnight. It takes years of training to get really good.

You hear a lot of criticism and trolling of "traditional" martial arts coming from sport jujitsu and kickboxing practitioners these days but a significant percentage of that criticism is coming from a place of ignorance and inexperience. From personal experience, when techniques like these are applied by high level black belts against a REAL resisting opponent or attacker the speed and power is extremely impressive, extremely impactful and effective. As a relative novice (I was a purple belt in this particular system) I once "fought" a 3rd degree black belt who was the main student of an original Parker Kenpo practitioner - himself a 7th dan sensei. I was a good and experienced street fighter (typical in my neighborhood). Long story short, I've never been hit so hard and so often, never seen someone move so fast and elusively, never had my punches bounce off hard as steel flesh & bone without effect like that before or since. Dude was like a monster. My strikes did nothing, even when I did rarely make contact, and his were like getting hit with metal pipes. I put up a good fight because fighting for me was not play, but this guy and his years of practice was far beyond anything I could have imagined. That experience and that knowledge is what the trolls are missing.

You are so correct in your assessment of what really happens . Thank you for putting it in the terms that most people can understand .

@@craigmason2260 well said. I try to point out these same things but the trolls never seem to understand.

Excellent points and well said. They are most definitely ignorant. I have trained in the American Kenpo style as well as Lima Lama and the Tadashi Yamashita style of Karate. They all have the fast hands and hard hits along with some grappling and joint locks/breaks. All very effective techniques and movements. But you have to experience it from a high level teacher. I have known several experts and they were all very impressive and honestly there isn't much you can do if they wanted to hit you. It's almost impossible to do anything to them, there is no defense. The speed and power they possess is extremely formidable. And their skill is very advanced. The old school jujutsu, the Japanese style not the BJJ style that a lot of people train in today, is deadly too and has proven itself on the street many times. Also Kung Fu San Soo is a very good one, although I have never trained in it I have watched many video tapes of it and took a try out class one time. Also known in the military special forces units ( such as the Navy SEALS ) as SCARS or SAFTA. These trolls don't have a clue to what their missing. But they don't know what their talking about. They just repeat the things they heard from the internet like a human parrot and speak only from their very limited experience.

Thank you for using a taller opponent in your demonstrations, most demo's are done with a much bigger Uke and smaller Tori which is not always the case on the streets. Depending on the size of the opponent one technique may not be ideal but another.

I know your post is old, but in case you get notification. I originally learned an offshoot of the Tracy system (TraCo). The techniques basically track; however, the Tracy Brothers reorganized and renamed some of the techniques. For example, in Tracy yellow below belt There are Bearhug I, II, III and IV each with several variations. IKKA Orange Belt Striking Serpents head would be Bearhug III Free in Front B; Crashing Wings would bearhug I Free in Back A (i think.) There are some differences in how some of the techniques are performed and some techniques are learned at different belt levels.

Wow! Ive been in Kenpo since 95 and have NEVER heard of this man! He is REALLY GOOD and I have very high standards when it comes to American KENPO. Unfortunately I missed Mr. Parker but Mr. Dennis Tosten trained me and promoted me to 2nd Degree. He was promoted to 7th Degree by Ed Parker and used to come to his house when he was on the East Coast.

How long did it take for you to learn all of these techniques? And can it be data overload?
@zalsat16
@zalsat16 4 месяца назад
Like anything worth doing, it does take time to learn and perfect the techniques. How long would depend on the instructor and the time you could invest. I started in high school and was obsessed. At the dojo 6 days a week, private lessons 2x/week. You learn the techniques in private lessons. I'd spend most of my time at home practicing. I advanced very quickly. Even if you don't have that kind of commitment (you know, a person with a life! lol) It doesn't take as long as you'd think to LEARN the techniques and perform them effectively. The nuances and depth that Mr. Fredericks had (along w other high ranking black belts) take may years. IMPORTANT NOTE: In the Parker System : Starting at 1st deg Brown the student relearns the techniques for Yellow Belt, at 1st deg Black, student relearns Orange techniques, etc. The difference is that more nuance is learned including various extensions to the basic techniques. Mr. Fredericks breaks down the specifics including extensions in his videos. Most don't do that.
