I don't think Cox was ever destined to be a player who regularly turned games around, but as an aussie I just gotta admire the guy for persevering, giving it all he had, and making it to the top level of a totally unfamiliar sport in another country. He's had ups and downs but is still on the Collingwood team, though the team has had a rough season this year and gets a new coach soon. It's unclear whether Cox will be retained or have to move elsewhere. Fun fact: Collingwood is that team everybody else traditionally loves to hate, but their fans are fanatically loyal. Every sport has one!

That ANZAC day game. For Americans that don't know, ANZAC (Australia / New Zealand Armed Corps) Day is the equivalent to our Memorial Day, Veterans Day, and Armed Forces Day, rolled into one. The entire country basically stops for that game, which is always Collingwood v. Essendon, and arguably has the 2nd highest attendance of any game in the season (second only to the Grand Final). It's a celebrated thing to play your first game. It's an even more celebrated thing when you kick your first goal, as every single teammate comes over to congratulate you. You are in seriously rare company if your first kick of the football is a goal... Mason Cox, in his first touch and possession of the football, with his first kick of the football, kicks his first goal, on ANZAC Day. Very few people, if any at all, can lay claim to that. It would be the equivalent of say, Randy Moss, or O'Dell Beckham, making one of their catches for their first catch as a touchdown, in their first game ever, on Veteran's day or Thanksgiving Day. That's why the commentators said "Can you believe that an American, in his first game, kicks the first goal, on ANZAC Day? That didn't happen!!!" Because it did. and then that Preliminary Final.. during the Finals, the teams in the top 8 positions in the competition play finals. Richmond, who were the 2017 premiers (they won the entire competition) were favored to win this game, as there were only 4 teams left. The winner of this final plays in the Grand Final (their Super Bowl), while the loser is out and starts planning for the next season. Richmond also happened to have a streak of 22 straight wins at the MCG, so they were clear favorites.. you see what happened.

Cox is an average player at best but considering how far he's come, he's earned the respect of a lot of doubters. He didn't even know what AFL was in 2014 and a few years later he's out there playing professional footy alongside guys who have been playing since they were kids. Regardless of which team you support you've got to admit that's impressive. Credit where credit's due.

Yes he playing and yes it the Grand Final this week end with the Brownlow Medal and Wednesday is the EJ Whitten Legends Game that older play which some get mic up which you can hear what they say

A lot of players in the AFL played basketball as young fellas. The skills you learn in basketball transfer will to footy. Both Patty Mills and Ben Simmons were good junior footballers. They would've made the AFL. Another great reaction partner!

Is he still playing? Mason Cox was very unlucky to have not one the best on ground award for his performance in the Queens birthday clash against the reigning premiers Melbourne - 2 days ago.

I seriously respect him and his journey, the hardships he went though and the criticism, but he’s not a superstar (yet). With all due respect, he is nowhere near the best nor even the great or the good in our game (yet). He still has a long way to go, and I’m sure he’ll keep improving every year. -from a Collingwood-hating West Coast fan.
