the events in the prison are based on a real rebellion that happened in 2002 in Rio de Janeiro, changing few things in the film to what actually happened, Fraga is based on Marcelo Freixo, a politician from Rio, and Captain Nascimento is based on in a former BOPE police officer Rodrigo Pimentel. In real life they are friends. Freixo helped BOPE in real-life rebellions.

man BOPE is the last thing they use to try to solve a problem, BOPE doesn't come to arrest anyone, it comes to put an end, you know, so that's what he says in the movie "he did what he learned at BOPE" and I agree , a bandit is supposed to be dead so they don't disturb the lives of good people anymore.
André is the first name and Mathias his surname. His full name is André Mathias. Generally MP (BOPE) soldiers use the last name as a "name of war". By the way, the BOPE symbol doesn't mean "death" but the opposite: the REAL meaning is victory over death.
5:41 the guy in purple shirt is a polititian named Marcelo Freixo, the character of Fraga is based on him, i've watched this movie a few times already and only now i've spotted that lol
Ele fez parte do BOPE
In the university class scene, the guy is simulating a professor and popular Brazilian politician, he's the first guy watching the class. In the movie the name is Fraga, but in reality the name is Freixo.
This riot in a maximum security prison really happened, in 2002. It was led by the biggest arms dealer in Brazil "Fernandinho Beira-Mar", and he killed rival faction members and charred the body of another boss, "Uê". And so that event inspired the film.
Here in Brazil a lot of things go inside the jail, hidden in food or objects that friends and family give to the prisoners, everything is searched, but they always manage to hide it very well, most in the jail even have a cell phone (simple with a button) that sneak in
Fun fact: At 5:41, is Marcelo Ribeiro Freixo, which is a Brazilian politician and teacher. He is a federal deputy for the Brazilian Socialist Party, and was formerly chairman of the Defence of Human Rights and Citizenship Commission on the Rio de Janeiro Legislative. In "Tropa de Elite 2", history teacher Diogo Fraga, played by actor Irandhir Santos (left), was inspired in real life by Marcelo Freixo, currently a federal deputy. In the film, in addition to being a teacher, the character Fraga is a human rights activist and becomes a state deputy and president of the CPI against the power of the militias in Rio de Janeiro.
Right now Brazil's got the 3rd largest number of imprisoned convicts in the world (US in 1st place, China comes in second). And this has solved shit. It's just getting worse. The elite doesn't solve the cause of the problem because they need this problem to exist so they can keep selling their "solution". Let that simmer in your skillet. That being said, you do an awesome job with your reactions, homie. Stay strong.
Thank you. I know it must be hard to live that way. If the bandits live the same way then that means it’s not just the bandits that are wrong the same people that are supposed to protect you has some accountability
Both Nascimento and Fraga are real people that inspired thos roles: Marcelo Freixo (a left wing politician and human rights activist) and Rodrigo Pimentel (a former captain of BOPE). Both of them appear in the movie. When Fraga is giving a lecture in university @5:41 it shows 2 guys in the 1st row. The one with a brown T-Shirt is Marcelo Freixo. When Capt. Nascimento walks in the restaurant @25:15 the guy the says 'well done' in a blue shirt is Rodrigo Pimentel. In real life they are friends but have an opposite opinion about public security, law no drugs, police, etc.
32:13 that place is a 10 minute walk from where i live, it's the actual bope building where they deploy from when i walked into there the 1st time, there was a painting on a wall of a bope soldier pointing a gun at whoever walks in, that scared the shit out of me lmao
O maior problema do Brasil é a corrupção e o crime organizado.
33:26 » you have to choose a way to solve the problem. the baby would either way be killed in front of the father/mother if the trafficking didn't receive money for the rent or anything else like that // it's a WAY more complex dynamic than you would ever think
Like aqui para ele ver. Like here for him to see. Human rights here in Brazil generally benefit criminals. 1. The police can only shoot an armed bandit if the bandit shoots the police. 2. When a criminal is arrested, there is a custody hearing, which asks if the criminal was mistreated and, if so, whether this could have psychologically affected the criminal. This can even lead to the arrest of the police. Among other things. Usually people on the left defend "human rights", but for me and most people here (I believe), people want the bad guys to at least be arrested and serve their sentences. And if a bandit is armed to the teeth, he has to be executed without first having a bandit action. When Colonel Nascimento enters the restaurant and the population applauds, it's because the people want what's right, a bandit in jail and an attempt is made against someone's life, dead.
bro, in Brazil a large part of the population is afraid of being robbed every day when they go out to work, imagine working hard for months to buy something like a car and a criminal comes and takes it away, and the worst part probably won't even be arrested and If it's difficult to spend more than 2 years in prison, they kill because of a cell phone, there's no mercy, so that's why the applause scene. and when the scenes in the favela are relaxed because the police are well trained, 99% of the deaths of innocent people in the favelas are blamed on drug traffickers, but the media reports it as being committed by the police when they have no way of knowing, and when a police officer kills a criminal at media portrays as innocent
25:07 The reason the people were clapping is because Brazil suffers alot in the hand of the drug dealers and criminals. And with all of this suffering we get a little bitter, so Nascimento was a like a hero. It is something so accurate, any brazillian would understand
This film is about BOPE in the early 2000s. Try to see about them now in 2023. Simply, the best police force in the world. They are fearless and very good at what they do, they are the ones who put terror into organized crime in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. But they weren't always that good, not when it came to rescuing hostages. There was a case in 2000, on a public bus in which BOPE failed to rescue the hostage who died. Since then, there has been a troop dedicated to rescuing hostages within the Special Police Operations Battalion. It is an incredible police force, which was initially trained by the Amphibious Commandos, which are the special forces of the Brazilian Navy.
the guy that got shot was one of the cartel's head, so for matias it was a chance to eliminate the bad guy, fraga was trying to solve the rebellion situation peacefully and matias saw it as taking his chance away
People applauded him in the restaurant because the Brazilian population can no longer take the violence of crime, he was promoted for the same reason. So when a policeman kills a bandit he is like a hero, fuck human rights! We want rights for the good people and for banditry to rot...
This riot at the start of the movie is based on a true event. It happened in 2002, in Bangu 1, and it probably worked out just like the movie showed. The members of the faction Comando Vermelho invaded the other gallery, which was reserved to it's rival, ADA. The boss of the other faction was killed and his body, carbonized.
The major difference is, in the actual event, there was no execution by the BOPE. The criminals were arrested, and, as far as I'm aware, no one was shot by the police.
A verdadeira vítima, nunca é reconhecida.
yes i live in a favela. When there's shooting, that's how it is. The noise of war is horrible. The helicopter is called an eagle and it passes very low. It's very noisy and we feel the house shake.
Boy, in Brazilian jails, inmates have everything, they spend a lot of money to have a cell phone, a penknife and anything passed by the jailers. There was even a case last year (if I'm not mistaken), of a prisoner doing tiktok inside the jail, hahahaha
