At first we may seem cold and reserved, but if You show respect to our history and culture and learn at least some basic phrases in the beginning, we will appreciate. And we are NOT part of Russia. Most people from the west usually confuse us with the Lithuanians our Southern brothers. And we're both in Baltics, not the Balkans.
Visited Riga in November. We loved it so much we have booked to stay again, So clean and beautiful ,We found everyone friendly and love the food , Its an amazing place, we also love visiting Lithuania,

Many people think latvians are russians while many russians never even heard about it 😂. The fact many latvians speak russian is because they are multilingual. The most latvians speak english as good as dutch people and sometimes you'll find someone who speaks german. And yes, there are living many russians like hispanics in America
That about prison in Liepāja is total blsht. It has nothing to do with ww2 and being like nazi prisoner. It is about being KGB prisoner and be treated like russian GULAG prisoner.
