I think it's the title of the video that the actual uploader named it...literally just that uploader's personal opinion, it's not like it's based on some survey or anything I myself WOULD describe it as the most "British" sketch... so people learning English might find it interesting; (and anyone who likes language in general as a topic, like Stephen Fry's "Language" sketches in A Bit of Fry and Laurie)

Some context: I absolutely bloody love this sketch, I reference it all the time, and I think it's definitely up there as one of my favourites. However, it's quite different from a lot of the other sketches that often get labelled as the best of Python, and that's partly because this sketch comes from an episode in the fourth series of the show, which was the only series not to feature John Cleese, who was busy working on what would come to be known as the legendary sitcom Fawlty Towers (he has a writing credit in collaboration with Chapman). The Pythons also took a year off from writing/filming Flying Circus in order to make their first feature film, The Holy Grail, which came out a year before series four aired, and they were blowing up in the U.S. at the time. Some of the most surreal, unhinged Python episodes and sketches come from series four, and it's also worth noting that Chapman, who had been an alcoholic for years, was particularly difficult to work with and produced very bizarre material during this time, although a lot of the surreal content is attributed to the duo of Palin and Jones. It's the Bitches Brew of the Python TV pantheon. So series four sometimes goes a bit underappreciated amongst some elements of the Python fandom, and I have to imagine that apart from being someone's personal opinion, calling this sketch the best ever has as much to do with highlighting a sketch that more people may not have seen as opposed to the ones that have been seen/performed countless times in the history of Python. Like I said, this sketch and this whole episode is some of my favourite Python comedy of all, but I totally get why some people might think it's a let down after the title promised so much. Also the introduction of Palin as the pilot is a call back to an earlier sketch in the same episode which many people would miss if they hadn't seen the whole thing. Also good lord I just love that Gastly lamp so much.

This is actually one of my favourite sketched, even though it’s from season 4 - which is of a significantly different style and quality than the first 3 seasons. John Cleese wasn’t in s4, because he realised that it was already becoming derivative and repetitive. In season 4 the episodes tended to have much longer sketches and stories compared with the other seasons. My favourite bit of this sketch is the staff standing stiffly in the background, with their surreal uniforms (Mao suit, dark glasses etc.)

Carol Cleveland (born 13 January 1942) is a British-American actress and comedian, particularly known for her work with Monty Python, looked like her, the tinny aversered debutant. Her comedy acting skills brought her to the attention of the production team of Monty Python's Flying Circus. She appeared in 30 of the 45 episodes in the series, plus all four Monty Python movies. Cleveland has contributed to many post-Python projects including the Concert for George (Harrison) and Not the Messiah (He's a Very Naughty Boy). She has also appeared in many documentaries about the group's history, including Monty Python: Almost the Truth (Lawyers Cut).

I'm of an age where I watched this all first time around. It was on the 'second' BBC channel, late on Sunday evening, prob. 10:30. ( Remember, this was when TV shut down at 10:30 -11:00 pm, if you can imagine that, & only 3 channels, no video. ) Parents had already gone to bed [ to do whatever it was that parents do, when Junior is safely downstairs ]. It was a perfect arrangement. And the kids would arrive in school next day, armed with whatever had been the Python theme the night before. I can well remember sitting in morning school assembly, as gentle choruses of 'Spam, spam, spam, spam ...' would ripple up & be suppressed. Nowadays, people gladly talk about 'water-cooler moments', but for many of us, these truly were our moments. And they never fade.

The 'Pythons' had a fairly 'scattergun' approach. But, unlike modern stand-ups, with clubs etc to test & refine their material, they could only haul it up the flagpole, & see what happens. There are some gems. Some is frankly dross. Rose tinted glasses. There are a few bits of the dross that were picked up by equally talented comedians, & polished into shining jewels for themselves, by their own talent.

It's more of a satire of that endless stream of soapy dramas that periodically come out of England. Upstairs, Downstairs was probably the one that inspired this sketch. Downton Abbey is a more recent one that ran from 2010 to 2015. The British have nostalgic feelings about that period between the two World Wars when the Empire was still intact and the aristocracy ran the show.

The thing with Python is that their humour is strange, and to watch it these days you have to do it with the mindset that this was something that was done back in the 60s. I was a teen in the 90s when I first came across them and I was completely mindblown because this was nothing like anything I had seen before. These days with the internet everyone is exposed to all kinds of silly and nonsense humour, so Python doesn't have the same effect it used to have back in the day. Also, keep in mind that a lot of the humour in the shows you watch is done by people who grew up watching and idolising Monty Python, so a lot of their humour is heavily influenced by them as well.

What idiot called that their best ever sketch? pretty average I'd say (still liked it though). Generally Python is a cumulative effect, where you find yourself getting sucked into their own strange universe; it's a comedy technique that's always been around to some extent but they perfected it & took it to new levels. I always found that I'd end up feeling vaguely dissatisfied after each episode, that it wasn't as funny as the last one, but during the week the sketches would keep replaying in my head, getting funnier & funnier, till I was gagging for it by the next episode.

Your job is to make sense of it. Good luck. Sorry, it's just lunacy, and if you don't laugh at lunacy, you may well be a lunatic yourself. "The best sketch" is of course down to the individual, but this one shows how the upper-classes may have had so much time, they couldn't engage in any worthwhile activities. The Monty Python Team had so much contact with the upper classes through University etc, they knew how to take the piss. My hint is that if you ever feel an attack of sanity, then Monty Python may not be for you.
