The Republic of Ireland isn’t actually in the UK, Northern Ireland is :) Also, interestingly, there is a debate as to whether England should have its own national anthem cos it doesn’t. England just uses the UKs God Save the Queen. The options for an English anthem are ‘Jerusalem’ (my fave), ‘Land of Hope and Glory’ (also very fun), and ‘I Vow to Thee, My Country’

@fintanoflaois70
@fintanoflaois70 3 года назад
Technically she's correct, the national anthem consists of the four verses of The Soldiers Song/Amhrán na bhFiannplus the chorus, but usually we use the abridged version by using the Chorus only - that's not unusual there's extended versions of several national anthems, including God Save the Queen. Also, the original version was The Soldiers Song which was written in English by Peadar Kearney, Amhrán na bhFiann is just a translation, and it's the English version that they state owns the copyright for, which technically is the national anthem.

Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau was composed by father and son Evan James and James James in 1856. The original title was Glan Rhondda, meaning Banks of the Rhondda if I remember correctly. It reached national acclaim in 1858 when it was performed at the Llangollen Eisteddfod (which is a festival held every year to celebrate Welsh culture, food, crafts, language, arts and more!) I think it was created when the writer's brother asked him to join him in America to start a new life and he pretty much didn't want I don't think, he must of loved his country too much! (though I don't think it has anything to do with us being sea farers in particular I think it is talking about the sea that cuts us off from a lot of the world but I could be wrong). While Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau is sung at national events and sporting occasions and universally recognised as Wales’ national anthem, it isn’t actually legally or officially known as such - which is the case for the majority of anthems in the British isles. It has also been called the extra man I believe, blamed for making other countries loose against us in sports events such as Rugby as it unites the crowd and allegedly broke the focus of the other teams. Last little fact is, is that song is one of the first known recordings of the Welsh Language. Hopefully this gives you some background into our culture. Also I don't know of welsh being sung in opera as I believe that it is mostly Italian though I do believe it could've been used in an opera somewhere, most likely by Welsh Fathers.

8:30 Just because a language uses the latin alpabeth doesn't mean that the letters always have the same sounds. That includes english not matching the original sounds in some cases. This means that when learning a language you have to learn the sounds of the local albabet too. I suspect that the letters *do* match up with the letters in Irish, although I don't actually *know*.

England on its own doesn’t have an official national anthem but we do have an unofficial anthem we use at the Commonwealth Games and occasionally international Rugby matches. It’s called Jerusalem (And did those feet in ancient time). You should definitely give that a listen! You missed NORTHERN IRELAND - the fourth part of the UK. Their anthem is Oh Danny Boy. A couple of things. 1. God save the Queen is the anthem of the UK. The National anthem of England is actually the hymn called ‘Jerusalem.’ 2. The Scottish national anthem is called Flower of Scotland and it does have lyrics, the lyrics tell the story of the first Scottish war of independence. 3. I am a bagpipe player and we do get to breathe 😂. The way it works is that when you blow the air is filtered into the bag and the reed that actually makes the sound. When you need to take a breath, you squeeze the bag and the air reserved in the bag is filtered into the reed so the sound and your fingers keep going while you take a quick breath. The Scottish national anthem actually does have lyrics but I would say they match the vibe you got from just the instrumental. Also not sure about football but at Scottish rugby games the bagpipes are usually there for the anthems, I would also say hearing the welsh sing their anthem in a full stadium is one of my favourite things, it sounds beautiful

The Scottish anthem is called "Flower of Scotland " and is both a celebration of the victory over the English at the Battle of Bannockburn in 1314, and a lament for the many Scottish soldiers who were killed during the battle. Hence why it may have sounded sad in parts.

The letters don’t match the pronunciation in *English*, they match them perfectly in Irish though 😉 Same as Welsh uses the Latin alphabet (just as English does) but that has separate pronunciations from Irish and English too. In terms of a call to action song you should check out the French anthem...

God save the Queen isn't the only british song that has an American equivalent. The current American national anthem is just the lyrics of a poem put to the music of a drinking song called "To anacreon in heaven" which is about a gentleman's club.

The bagpipes has 4 'parts' the pipe you blow into that fills the bag with air, the bag is held under the elbow and squeezed to release the air. There are three drones that give the fixed pitch 'wailing' sound. And the chance that is played like a penny whistle to give the tune.

The welsh (especially the men) have a reputation for being excellent singers particularly in opera and choral music. I think the language and the Welsh-English accent contributes as the vowel sounds are good for classical singing. The welsh men also have a long history of mining and the miners would have choirs and sing regularly. (Similar to how black Americans tend to sing well due to the history of work songs and gospel choirs.)

Opera is quite often in Italian! Opera is the style of singing which makes the pronunciation sound the way it does :) - also, Wales used to have a monarchy but the English came along and conquered us in the 13th century. The UK is a democracy 😅 I think the word you were looking for is the US is a republic, the UK is a monarchy - they’re both democracies. (As a side note, I think the UK should be a republic, I’m an anti-monarchist 😂 it’ll never happen tho cos the Royal Family is so intertwined with *everything* in this country that it would be too complicated to separate the Monarchy from the State)
@tommay6590
@tommay6590 3 года назад
A monarchy is quite the opposite of a democracy, since in the former the sovereign is the monarch I.e. the single human being, while in a democracy the demos, I.e. the People making up the nation, are sovereign. In the case of UK the sovereign of the monarch is limited or restricted by historical developments, e.g. Magna Charta or the bill of rights. Nowadays the political systems of the UK includes democratic elements, but that does not make it „a“ democracy.
