Hi King Boomer, just watched your two reactions to the brilliant Sean Lock - first his famous "Thats a challenging wank" comment and then "Carrot in a Box" This is a bit of a long comment but I hope you'll read it all and get an insight into how loved Sean was. I had been (and ofcourse still am) a huge fan of Sean since he first came onto our screens here in the UK over 25 years ago. I was working when the news came on the radio that Sean had passed away and I had to stop work and sit down while I cried for a full 30 minutes. I went home at the end of the day and spent all night drinking beer and watching Sean's many appearances on tv, swinging between laughing my arse off and crying like a baby. You were absolutely right in your observation that all the other comedians on 8 out of 10 cats seemed to look up to him - on the UK comedy circuit Sean was known as "The Comedians Comedian." Whenever he appeared on a show such as Live From The Apollo which featured several comedians doing their own individual routines, when Sean came on the stage to do his bit all the other comedians would come out of their dressing rooms and stand in the wings to watch him - such was the respect, adoration and love that he had from his peers. His loss to comedy is a devastating one, but we can at least console ourselves that there is a huge amount of Sean's material still out there to keep enjoying and through the miracle of RU-vid and through people such as yourself, although he is no longer with us he will continue to gain new fans. Thankyou so much Boomer for your kind words about Sean and keep watching him, keep reacting to his videos and keep laughing. FYI. In the '80s there were a series of catfood ads. on British TV and they all ended with the line "eight out of 10 owners who expressed a preference said their cat prefers it". This line became a meme before there WERE memes! In 2005, Channel 4 launched a comedy panel show called '8 Out of 10 Cats' ". . . a show about opinion polls, surveys and statistics" as host Jimmy Carr said at the start of every episode. There were two teams of three comedians/celebrities, two of whom were team captains. Sean Lock was one (series 1-18) and Jon Richardson the other (from series 11-18). In 2012, as part of it's 30th-anniversary celebrations, Channel 4 did a one-off mash-up show combining '..Cats' with its daytime, 'family viewing' quiz show called 'Countdown', called '8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown'. It proved such a success that a series was commissioned, and its been running ever since. It was from this show that the '... challenging wank' clip was taken. The 'Carrot in a Box' clip was from a Christmas edition of 'Eight Out of 10 Cats', although it has made an appearance on its sister show. As others have suggested, you should see 'Carrot in a Box' II and III.

This never gets old. Sean may have passed but his comedic genius is going to be immortal.

Sean truly was a comedic genius, but even though he's gone he's still able to make so many people laugh and it's great. Also, if you like the deception of carrot in a box, you might like another great game show called "Would I Lie To You" and if you do check it out I recommend the clip of Kevin Bridges talking about buying a horse.

Last Christmas at the family get together at our house, we played "Chocolate in a Box".....ripped off completely from this epic segment. We drew out names to face each other...kids v kids, kids v adults, adults v adults to win some chocolate - it was the best and funniest time ever ....next Christmas we will do the same......thank you 8 out of 10 Cats for the inspiration

Love seeing your appreciation of dear Sean. He was absolutely brilliant in this clip, and always the funniest on that show.

There’s an interview with jimmy about Sean after he passed, talking about this game. When they were discussing doing the bit, they were mostly thinking to get rid of it, but Sean spoke up and said no, they should keep it and do it. Knowing that makes this even more epic.

Sean won it in the first five seconds when he pretended to reach inside for a carrot that wasn't there. Genius

It's 2 shows combined. They did a crossover night where Channel 4 did obscure versions of shows for charity. Countdown was the first show ever on Channel 4... In it's simplest form, it's a puzzle show making words from random selections of letters and randomly selected sum totals from random selections of numbers. It's bit nerdy formal and orderly and shown mid afternoon. The show you're watching clips from is basically that gameshow (format) with the regular guests from 8 Out Of 10 Cats - a comedy/celebrity panel show with questions based on surveys and polls... The title comes from the tagline of an advert "8 out of 10 cats prefer Whiskers" (a catfood brand). It's chaotic and funny and shown late night. So this show that you're watching clips from, the combination of 2 old shows, was just meant to be a one-off crossover but people seemed to like it. It's like a formal afternoon tea with the grand parents that somehow turned into a rave, but for some reason it works.

8 out of 10 cats is a comedy panel show based on statistics of the UK and current affairs. (Hence 8 out of 10) For a charity week they took over another show called Countdown (a game show based on maths and anagrams which is watched by the elderly and university students. Don't ask..) to form '8 out of 10 Cats does Countdown' which was so popular they just kept it running for 10 plus years now

First time I saw this my reaction was the same as yours - open mouthed amazement followed by thinking that’s the best thing I’ve ever seen. RIP Sean, you’re much missed.

The moment when John calls him out and says "if there's no carrot in here you're a genius" and Sean's seemingly genuine reaction of "no no" is amazing. Never really saw much of him when he was alive, but God he was funny

Sean Lock was an absolute genius comedian- the way he conjures images and his child like love of being inappropriate and saying exactly the wrong thing at exactly the right time made him my favourate comedian. The RNLI is a charity (Royal National Lifeboat Institute) that often collects money for lifeboats- so it is held in high standing, which is why saying he embezelled them is so wrong/funny.

Funny thing is when they pitched the game both Jimmy and Jon didn’t want to do it, said there was nothing in the segment (no comedic value) but Sean said they should do it, convinced the other two to do it and this was the result, Sean made it hilarious, you definitely need to watch some of his other stuff

Sean was an absoloute legend. He had a Sitcom with the now Marvel famous Benedict Wong that never got recognition. He wrote jokes too for Bill Bailey. There was a great 8 out of 10 Cats does countdown. James Cordon was on. Alcholism isn't funny, but the mistake of putting real booze was presented as a "mascot" James got wasted on air and Sean, also... Gentlemanly tipsy turned into his Dad. They never air it anymore, but on the night it was hilarious. Takes of a panel show have a lot of breaks. Where the crew adjust mics, reset cameras, reapply makeup etc. In fact when a panellist gets up or walks over or off, it takes a 5 minute break to reset... Anyway, so the bottle was serrupticiously getting lower. James started clutching the bottle and slurred. Jimmy said something like "ok James can we make an anagram of what you just said?" Sean stepped in, defused the whole thing. Something like "I like parlour games. Fun aren't they eh? Till someone loses an eye huh yur." Something like that. The audience roared and Corden drank water the rest of the night. Have you watched Never Mind the Buzzcocks? The Early Years? Golden TV. Mark Lemaar, the host who co-wrote with Sean was bloody brilliant. Subsequent series just made it a farce, but that early series was amazing. It's basically a pub quiz for Dj's and comedians. Guest stars are actual musicians (or used to be) and everyone has fun. Pete Burns was the turning point, but it was hilarious. After Burns, the show became "poke the stick." Jedward was the bullet that killed the racehorse. Phil "Pretended" to walk off.

I was criminally late to watching this show regularly and missed out on a lot of Shaun but I saw enough to appreciate his genius. A naturally funny, charming guy whilst not giving a sh@t.

There's a massive rabbit hole of Sean Lock to dive into. He had a sitcom back in the 90s, he was on panel shows (like the one you just watched) basically every week for the last 15 years, he's done numerous stand-up specials. This is merely the beginning of his material. He was brilliant. Such a unique mind.
