I'm a Head Chef, I lived and worked in the UK and London for some time. The food in London is some of the best in the world in terms of major cities and Michellen standards. It's fairly common for Americans to complain about British food because they're used to a much higher sugar/preservative/additive count in their food. Many of the commonplace artificial enhancers that are widely used in the US for cost reasons are banned in Europe. Originally however, the concept dates back to WW2 British pubs are amazing, the alcohol content of the drinks is also significantly higher than in the US.

Having visited the US many times, I find it hilarious that most Americans seem to believe that English food is terrible. For a start, the majority of them have never even been to the UK. Second, they are confusing size with quality (most restaurant helpings in the US are far too large).
@danielleporter1829
@danielleporter1829 2 года назад
And some Americans still believe the old stereotype that American WWII GIs came home saying that British food isn't good. When in reality, over the last two decades chefs like Marco Pierre White, Gordon Ramsay and Jamie Oliver ( I know he's a bit of a lightening rod of controversy sometimes) have made a name for themselves stateside and by doing so, elevated British cuisine. Darren McGrady who's a former royal chef has a catering company in Dallas and a large following on RU-vid.

And people around the world do refer to the US by its shorthand names the US, USA and America more often than the United States. I didn't refer to myself as an American in some kind of superiority way, I am what I am, I'm an American, just like a Mexican who was born and raised in Mexico is Mexican, someone born and raised in Toronto, Winnepeg , Vancouver, Halifax or Montreal are all Canadian or if someone is born in Cuzco, Peru and anothet person is born in the capital of Lima, they're both Peruvian.

Scotland is a sovereign nation, recognised as such by organisations such as the UN. Check their website if you don't believe me. Scotland retains its own legal system, established church , education and Police force, and that is written into the Acts of Union. It is also the only one which consents to the Monarchy. The Queen does not wear the Crown of Scotland (older then that in the Tower of London), but is offered it at the opening of Scotland's Parliament. She lays a hand on it in acceptance. The British food thing is such a misconception! Having lived in both countries trust me the food in Europe and the UK is more than fine. It’s not just English Breakfast. There’s ~ 20,000 restaurants just in London alone, along with plenty of Michelin stared. The theory that British food is bad is a hangover from WW2. Having lived in NYC and the US the thing that strikes you is how modified the food is. Like chicken breasts are twice the size but plummeted up and taste like rubber, then the plastic cheese, fried everything, super-sizes, crap soft drinks. My NY colleagues would think they’re eating healthy by buying a ‘salad’ with disgusting gloppy dressing and all sorts crap meat and fried stuff added to it. I don’t mean to bash them as they’re lovely people, but just so morbidly overweight.

The dim view that especially Americans have on British food is still based on when IN THE WAR we had already been fighting for 2 yrs !,when the GI,s came across the british were on RATIONS, the GIs had NO idea that we were having to live on them!!!!!!! My parents had a corner grocery shop in a very small village near a camp that they were billeted inand one day a couple of them came in and watched customers pick up their rations,1oz marge, 1lb pots, etc etc,when it was their turn one of them asked if that was a daily ration,my mum told them " what do you mean ,daily ration?,thats their WEEKLY ration", the yank replied ,"gee,we,d no idea,I must write home to the folks". Rationing in this country DIDNT fully end until 1953! It was a long haul back from 5 years of war a concept america has never had to deal with.

Around the same time, my dad was sent on a business trip to Dublin. One of the reasons many of our police forces still have mounted officers is that it encourages the public, and especially children, to see the police as approachable and friendly.

Regarding the policing - UK police are trained to follow the "Peelian Principles" of policing by consent. While these may have faded a bit over the years, they are a core part of how we have effective law enforcement without an implicit threat of violence. 1. To prevent crime and disorder, as an alternative to their repression by military force and severity of legal punishment. 2. To recognise always that the power of the police to fulfill their functions and duties is dependent on public approval of their existence, actions and behaviour, and on their ability to secure and maintain public respect. 3. To recognise always that to secure and maintain the respect and approval of the public means also the securing of the willing co-operation of the public in the task of securing observance of laws. 4. To recognise always that the extent to which the co-operation of the public can be secured diminishes proportionately the necessity of the use of physical force and compulsion for achieving police objectives. 5. To seek and preserve public favour, not by pandering to public opinion, but by constantly demonstrating absolutely impartial service to law, in complete independence of policy, and without regard to the justice or injustice of the substance of individual laws, by ready offering of individual service and friendship to all members of the public without regard to their wealth or social standing, by ready exercise of courtesy and friendly good humour, and by ready offering of individual sacrifice in protecting and preserving life. 6. To use physical force only when the exercise of persuasion, advice and warning is found to be insufficient to obtain public co-operation to an extent necessary to secure observance of law or to restore order, and to use only the minimum degree of physical force which is necessary on any particular occasion for achieving a police objective. 7. To maintain at all times a relationship with the public that gives reality to the historic tradition that the police are the public and that the public are the police, the police being only members of the public who are paid to give full-time attention to duties which are incumbent on every citizen in the interests of community welfare and existence. 8. To recognise always the need for strict adherence to police-executive functions, and to refrain from even seeming to usurp the powers of the judiciary of avenging individuals or the State, and of authoritatively judging guilt and punishing the guilty. 9. To recognise always that the test of police efficiency is the absence of crime and disorder, and not the visible evidence of police action in dealing with them. www.policesuccess.co.uk/blog/what-are-the-peelian-principles

This wasn't somewhere really rural, not like Cumbria or Lincolnshire, just Surrey - where the towns "really" seem centuries-removed from the villages, farmland and green-belt land which separate them - and these Americans were repeatedly marvelling at the fact that nowhere in America looks like this...except maybe in northern states like Maine?!

Also regarding the food. My first visit to the US was on attachment to a US army unit for an international exercise. When we NZ ers came to our first breakfast we all ignored the plated of cake and sweets etc and just took small (by comparison) helpings of bacon and eggs. When this went on for several days the head cook asked what kind of cake we preferred and was flummoxed that we didn't eat that for breakfast. We also gave up on the toast (which we requested instead of the sweet toasted bun things we were offered as the bread was, you guessed it, sweet. US bread has six times the amount of sugar in it than we have here. Overall the culinary experience was illuminating and my visits since only reinforce my first impression. Summed up as sugar, fat, cheese and beef. Frying being the preferred option where possible. Tasty, if you have no discernable palet and certainly not healthy as mortality and obesity rates confirm.

For chocolate, it's all about legislation. In the UK, to be called Chocolate, it needs to have at least 20% cocoa solids. Whereas in the US, it's 10%. Then everything else is based on how they want to flavour it, like palm oil, sugars etc. They both also mostly remove the cocoa butter to sell it on for more cash money, and thus have to add more sugars to sweeten. As an aside, somewhere like Hotel Chocolat have 40% cocoa solids as a standard, and they do not remove their cocoa butter. Which is why it tastes so different even from cadburys.

The thing to remember about British weather is that you can have anything! If you are lucky, you can have two weeks completely sunny. Heavy rain is not so common, but it does sometimes happen. Light rain and showers are more common. And the temperature can change by up to about 10 degrees Celsius from one day to the next. So if you come in the summer you need a packable rainjacket and a jumper to put on if the weather changes Another thing is that you don’t need to drive to get around. Most places have public transport, although it does get scarcer in the countryside. But, for instance, you could get a fast train from London to York (a beautiful city). If you want to see the Saltaire World Heritage site, you can get there by train from York (changing at Leeds). And the Yorkshire Dales are accessible by both the Settle-Carlisle railway and buses from Skipton (which has regular electric trains from Leeds and Bradford, and the Settle-Carlisle trains stop there too). Even the Highlands of Scotland has train services (for instance the railway from Glasgow to Fort William and Mallaig is very scenic). The thing about travel is to think about what you’re interested in, and then find out what’s available in the country you’re travelling to. Being an engineer, I am interested in all sorts of technology, especially associated with transport. So when I’ve been to the USA, I’ve visited USS Constitution, the Intrepid Air-Sea-Space museum, U-505 in the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago, the Georgetown Loop Railroad in Colorado, the historic ships in San Francisco etc. I am also interested in art, so I have visited the Metropolitan Museum in New York, the MoMAs in both New York and San Francisco, “Cloud Gate” and the Art Institute in Chicago, etc.

As a brit, I can't stress enough, how much London is a huge Tourist trap, don't give me wrong, London is ace as a day or 2 out, but I can't stress enough, travel or stay OUTSIDE London, try Oxford, or Cheltenham, there are many beautiful places around an hour away by road or rail, that have much much friendlier, beautiful and reasonable stays, not to mention cheaper, London is pure tourist based, and costs a BOMB! Go out to the countryside and the views are fabulous and worth it! Visit pubs, there are a few franchise pubs like Marstons, or Banks, or Harvesters pubs that offer great food, for excellent prices, like 2 for 1 offers of mid week specials etc, they still offer great drinks too but is much more friendlier on the wallet! Don't be fooled by London, you can easily burn hundreds if not thousands of British Pounds on food and events there, where for that kind of money could see u treated like a 5* king around the outer areas of the capital with just as much if not more bang for your buck, not to mention leave you speechless and more involved with the culture, we love to have people visit

@stevetheduck1425

This is also why the countries of Scotland, Ireland and Wales are greener than England. The islands and bits close to the sea 'trip up' the rain and it lands there first. Down in the South-East it can get pretty dry and hot, with the South-West getting both: warm weather due to the Gulf Stream, plus storms and rain. ;-)

The "bad British food" stereotype as many have mentioned originated from the experiences of American GIs stationed over here in WW2, but to be fair I think it persisted into the 1980s. Back then, any hint of garlic or onion would have been grounds to not eat due to the effect on breath, any kind of "heat" from chilies was not acceptable and vegetables were essentially "nuked" to death. In the 1990s though, there was an explosion of (a) ethnic food becoming popular in the UK, (b) more modern cooking shows on the TV than the traditional fusty frumpy ones of the past and (c) a bigger eat-out culture. The UK now has some of the best international food in the world, even though it's own indigenous cuisine is not world-beating (although there are very good elements). The "bad British teeth" stereotype is only partially true nowadays, and it's a question of what you consider to be bad. As others have said, objectively dental health in the UK is _better_ on average than in the USA, where there is clearly a lot more sugar in the diet even than in the UK. However, it is the case that we're not quite so much into cosmetic dentistry as the USA is, although that is changing. It's very obvious that almost all American teens get their teeth straightened out into an almost unnaturally perfect way, and that British teeth by comparison are often a bit more crooked. Is it _bad_ teeth though? I don't think we have more people with teeth rotting out of our heads than the USA does, but I don't think we have quite so much straightening on average.

@@grahvis That's the thing though: they might have _known_ in theory that it was not right to nuke vegetables, but somehow they often still managed to do it anyway. Perhaps you were fortunate to escape it but I bear the "scars" ! (yes, slightly over-dramatic but you take the point). To take the example you gave, many people in Britain absolutely hate cabbage and won't eat it purely because of their youthful experiences with overboiled cabbage which as you know smells fetidly soapy. However, cabbage can be wonderful if it's only very lightly cooked but some people are so traumatised by nuked cabbage that they refuse to try it even now when people do cook it well.

As some have mentioned the 'bad food' is an old stereotype from WW2. There were some foods that weren't available (anything that came from overseas etc) plus there was rationing (eg 1 egg each per month!) into the 1950's so people had to get creative & there were many 'mock' versions of foodstuffs, some of which were probably not good. Once recovered from that time period food is plentiful so a much better standard & quality. 😊

Belton House near Grantham is well worth seeing too. My home town of Boston is home to St Botolph's Parish Church. It has the tallest church tower in Britain. Its nickname is 'The Stump', as a spire was going to be put on top of the tower, but it never got built. The Pilgrim Fathers' first attempt to sail to America was thwarted in Boston, and Bradford and Brewster were imprisoned in Boston's Guildhall. The county of Norfolk is very picturesque, especially its north coast and the Broads.

Mind your P's & Q's is nothing to do with politeness or Queues. It's refering to lowercase p's & q's. It's from manual composition typesetting. The metal letters are mirror images so when you ink and print them they come out the right way around. The letters were stored in Boxes in two stacked rows in alphabetical order. The top row was Capital Letters aka Upper Case Letters, and the minuscule letters in the Lower Cases; hence Uppercase and Lowercase letters. If you're not paying attention to your work, the worker (called a compositor) could easily grab a 'q' instead of a 'p' and when they read their finished frame of inverted text (compositors only read their work in mirror image) your brain doesn't notice the mistake until you've printed the proofing page, and then it's a real pain and time consuming to dismantle the bolted tight frame to correct your mistake. So mind your P's & Q's means pay attention to what you are doing to avoid mistakes.

Food was scarce, during WWII. Everything was rationed or in short supply and it was dreadful. My granda worked at Newcastle Central Station, during WWII and a train came through, carrying GI's. There was a welcoming committee for them and the 'women' had made 'iced finger buns' - just a sweetened, hot-dog shaped bun, containing a meagre scattering of currants and sugar icing on top. To the Brits, these were luxury items. The GI's said "No, thank-you", or took one bite and discarded them. There were trays of them, going to go to waste, because the folks who made them were not allowed to take them. However, the rear carriages held Italian POW's, on their way to Scotland. My granda told 'the women', who ran down the station and threw buns through the barred windows, to "other mothers' sons" - as my granda, said they put it. A Scottish sergeant, one of the men guarding the prisoners, told them to 'stop feeding the prisoners!'. My granda tried to reason with him, but 'the women' told him to "Haddaway and shite!", bundled him and my granda, out of the way and got rid of their 'luxuries' to more appreciative customers. Because of the war and the rationing which continued, afterwards - lasting until 1954 - the British got a bad rep for food and deservedly so. Even after rationing ended, it took quite a while for people to change their ways. We were used to being 'food poor'. My mother could make half a pound of mince feed the seven of us! It disturbed her, for a long time, at how much butter we would put on bread; how much cheese we ate and the amount of food on the plate for a 'Full English Breakfast' - "That's over two week's of rations on one plate!". It took until the 80's before she started to relax. Well, the war and rationing were a long time ago and fewer and fewer people remember it. Those who spoke about how bad British food was, spoke a truth about the past, but it's a myth about the present. The food here is great. Come and try it! :)

I really like Wolters World I loved his video a few years back on Jamaica. Anyway, being British myself and from London, what our friend doesn't realise is that he is in central London the tourist part of London, being zone 1 where the very wealthy live, large businesses and all your top designer stores, fancy hotels, museums, Buckingham Palace, Kensington Palace, Harrods, Royal parks, tourist attractions etc. etc so of course everything is going to be nice. Also falling under zone 1 is the City of London where many businesses, corporate firms, law firms/international law firms, courts and financial institutions and such alike (too many to mention) operate their businesses from especially in the Square Mile (that basically runs the country, that's the financial heart of the country where the money comes from and businesses who cannot afford the office spaces in the city anymore or refuse to pay it or want more for their money have moved and more are moving further up the river over to Canary Wharf the East side of the River Thames into zone 2). Having worked in the City of London for many years it is kind of civilised with a lot of politeness (not always in the office), but when you step out of that into the suburbs things start to change. Zone 2 is mostly OK, still bordering zone 1, but then when you start going into greater London the more real life suburban areas like zones 3/4 where a lot of people live and commute into the city and central London for work and also from zones 5 and beyond, into the Kent, Surrey and Essex countrysides, southwest and north of the country and beyond as far as the coast people take various rail links into central London and the city. People in a lot of the suburban areas do not queue like he said, especially not at bus stops anymore which is annoying amongst other things and some people aren't polite at all and neither are all the policemen, although you will find some helpful and polite ones. Out of a lot a lot of the western countries, England is one of the more sophisticated in my opinion and I'd also say Paris. Thank goodness we don't have police with guns here like you do in the States who are trigger happy. We have special units who carry, like the Met Police's SCO19 and Authorised Firearms Officers (AFO) who deal with firearms incidents and then there's Specialist Firearms Officers who are usually trained to a higher standard than AFO's because they are required for besieged premises or terrorist situations etc. There are a few gun incidents here, but they are usually illegal guns carried by criminals. It's not a bed of roses here, we have other serious problems. Just exercise wisdom like you would if you were in the States or any other country in the world, just don't get too relaxed and let your guard down completely and take silly risks. The food in the UK is generally nice, but you also have some terrible food here, but it all depends on where you eat and what you eat and your budget. You can get whatever you want here and it depends on how deep your pockets go, plus don't forget, we are quite a melting pot of cultures so you can eat many different foods from all around the world here in the UK. That's enough for now, just a snippet of information or I'll go on forever. Blessings & Peace!✌🏾

It's always a safe bet when you first meet someone in UK to ask them if they live locally. From the conversation thereafter you'll soon find out where they come from. As a Cab driver in Edinburgh I find Americans to be very inquisitive and eager to learn. Same as I would be abroad. As for guns, most cops are unarmed (aside from tasers and maybe pepper spray). I'm Welsh from Swansea, although I now live in Poland, but I'm very proud to be British. There are separatist movements with Plaid Cymru, YesCymru and Propel back home in Wales, the SNP in Scotland and Sinn Fein in Northern Ireland, but the majority of us from Wales don't want independence. And those who do are mostly from North Wales anyway. I can't speak entirely for Scotland, but every Scottish person I've met doesn't want Scotland to become independent either. Northern Ireland is a bit of a complicated matter because there it's religious. The Protestant population there are majoritively unionist and the Roman Catholic population there are majoritively seperatist for either Northern Irish independence or a United Ireland. There are exceptions, but that's how it is overall. Plus since the Good Friday Agreement of 1998, Northern Irish residents can choose to be British or Irish citizens. But whether or not we from the non-England UK like being called "British" or not, we still know that we are because we're all part of the United Kingdom. It's more about acknowledgement and who you are. It's also not helped by the fact that Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland are devolved, so it gives separatists in those parts of the country the excuse to push their sad little pro-independence agendas though. 🙄

Nope. It literally means pay careful attention to the lowercase letters p and q so you don't mix them up. It's from typeset printing where you had boxes of inverted letters in 2 rows in alphabetical order. In the top row were the capital letters and in the bottom were the miniscules, that's also why we now say uppercase and lowercase letters. A mirrored p is a q and a mirrored q is a p and the cases are next to each other in the row. If you were not paying attention in your work and rushing then you could easily grab the wrong letter and not notice until you'd built a whole page of text, screwed the frame tight and printed a proofing page. It was then a lot of work to go back and fix your mistakes. So mind your p's & q's means pay attention to what words you are using.

the only cultural shock to any USA citizen is that you don't carry a gun!

While i agree with your comment, I question what he would gain from doing so. Like if were to visit say, Chicago and go to a gang controlled ghetto - might make an interesting vlog but wouldn't encourage others to follow my steps!

@@Interdimensional27 He would see the real culture of our people, the good and the bad, warts anaul. The people of the rough areas of Britain were once the backbone of this country, and we can be again and we are not really bad. There is good and bad everywhere.

Here we are today in windy England ? Strange how the clouds aren't moving and people are walking around without a coat !.The rainfall in New York is heavier than it is in England .British food is some of the finest in the world but you would need to judge it for yourself . Wolter talks some rubbish at times .

Being a British citizen and watching this is rather hilarious😂 we take the history for granted, it’s too normal for us😂 the pub is special place for us. It isn’t just a place to drink it’s a second home🤷‍♂️😂

As a person identifying as scottish due to both parents being born there and moving back there at 12 years old. I would say that no I would not be offended at being called British. But I do identify as Scottish. Unless filling in a form etc where I don't mind if that's the only option. It is however to call Great Britain England. But I will say (hope this doesn't go too far) that English people are not aware that we get offended by that as it is a union of countries. Hope this helps. Love the vids

And to add. I am happy to be British. Just offended at Americans and English thinking England and the UK are the same thing. Again. Good vid

Me too, I like how important pubs are. We just have bars,a dive, something to stay away from.
