I'm portuguese always lived here (I'm 54 yo) and had never seen those cars. Yes in general cars are smaller but let's not exagerate. The guy knowing on your door to check the electricity, etc it's rare this days only in pretty old buildings, most have them outside so they don't need to know on your door, also this chack it's only made like 2 or 3 times per year.

As a native portuguese i must correct the video you're reacting to since most of the stuff is plain wrong, i dont even know where that person got they're "informations"... 1 - The meters arent always in the inside of the house/apartment... only on old homes... most meters are either on the exterior walls and in the case of apartments are on the floors corridors in cabinets. 4 - Its somewhat wrong... people do grocery shopping once a week mainly, but sometimes things like meat, fish and/or veggis are bought daily to maintain freshness. 8 - Theres no weird cars like that here in Portugal, thats internet footage... 9 - Wrong again... only on old houses where there isnt much space or/and live older people they usually put the clothes to dry on the balcony or window to safe money and space, instead of buying a dryer. Of course theres 24/7 laundrys people can use. 10 - Theres not much need for it since portuguese homes have good isolation and wind circulation. Just a plain fan and heater is required. Also we tend to save money not using a lot of electric apliances since energy is expensive. 13 - So much BS... in city centers is completely prohibited to walk with alcohol drinks in a certain time frame... Also drive and drink is completely prohibited, can leave to have the license ceased for a while... there !! ZERO !! tolerance on drunkiness... 14 - Depends on the degree, but most ones start at 8 am. 15 - Thats the most wrong thing ever... me and my wife with 4 cats and 2 cars in a rented house we spent almost 1500 to 2000 euros per month. Our luck is that we have "good" paying jobs, despite in other countrys there are much better paid due to being very risky jobs. The average wage in Portugal its 741 euros before taxes... with tax's its about +/- 550 euros... An average rent of an apartment with one bedroom ( T1 ) is about 600 euros, more 200 euros of expenses (gas, water, internet and electricity) and of course grocerys, fuel for both cars, etc... its not very "cheap" now isnt it ?
@S3nn4h

Well cheap for her because she must be one of these Internet Nomads. They are people who can work wherever they like because they are not bound by physical location. So if she is living in Portugal but working with a US contract that gives her 3-4k or more, then yeah that's pretty cheap...

Acho que erraste no salario medio portugues.... O salario medio portugues ronda os 1200-1300 euros liquidos, enquanto o salario minimo é os tais 741 liquidos... A questao das maquinas de secar, conheco bem poucos que as têm.

1- These days the meters are mostly outside. Companies also bill by estimate so readings only happen twice a year. 8- You won't be seeing cars like that. 12- Yes I know people who went from a night out to work or school. I did it myself. 16- 22 days is the minimum mandatory paid time of. You can get more. Regarding salaries, yes they are low. That's why we emmigrate so much. And CoL has been increasing like crazy for the past 10 years or so.

as a portuguese, at least where i live, school only starts at 9am in pre-school and primary school, but after 4th grade it starts at 8am as well and the time you spend at school can be VERY long (like 8:10am - 6:30pm, though i don't know if school time is shorter or longer in the usa)

The car difference is a joke, it couldn't be more far from the truth ... ROFL. Tipping in Portugal is a respectful and kind gesture for a service that has surpassed your expectations, so don't tip always but if someone provides a great service cause he/she went far and beyond then it's polite to tip. When I was a kid, I remember going to the club at midnight, exiting it at 08h00, going for brunch to one of my fav spots then straight to work, nowadays NOPE.

There's autopay for utilities as well, and usually what happens is a few days before they place a notice on your building's door saying they will be there on day something something in the morning to check the meters and you can just leave a post it outside your door with the readings and they'll send you the bill accordingly. Looks like she draws too many conclusions from the first experiences.

Tips are expected, they’re just not mandatory. Waiters are severely underpaid and the tips are a supplement. Most people use this as a system to reward better service with a better tip, and if you do dislike the service or produce, not leaving a tip would be morally acceptable. In any case you will not be hassled about it!

Nowadays, we see on the news almost every sector going on strikes to better our life quality, specially the teachers and medical staff which are bases of every society😥😡

Let me correct somet things: 1- that thing of the cars part its not true at all, I mean we have those cars in rural parts of the country, not in the citys, I can understand that she wanted to compare "american muscles" and SUV's from america to Portugal but in America the cars are bigger compared with EVERY single country in EUrope, specially the SUV's they are completely Bathtubs compared to European SUV's. 2- yes we have climate control, most of the new houses made after 2010 with prices higher than 200.000$ already have. 3- in portugal we dont ask or simply expect tips because it CAN BE seen as a bribery. with this Im not saying that we dont give tips, and Ive seen some people trying to give a tip not as a compensation but trying to achive their goals as clients. 4- in the partys some people make the " after hours" they leave the discos at 6 am or 7 am and go to other partys.

As a portuguese I need to say something about the prices. Our prices are low because we are poor!!! 1000 euros of cost living is too much! It is not cheap in any way for majority of portuguese citizens! Our minimum salary is 700 euros and normally we get way less than that per month! And at this point as the portuguese economy is, we are just surviving So, please, don't see hour houses as an easy and cheap way to live, cause than the house prices go up (our salaries don't) and the citizens cannot find a home themselfs! Visit? Welcome in! Moving from a country to another looking for a better life? Bem vindo! Buying a house simply because it's cheap? Please don't. Ps: I'm not exagerating, this has been happenning over the years and it's getting worse. Do not advertise Portugal as a cheap way to live.
