Kenny was brilliant on tv and radio. watch him doing his rod Stewart parody! Kenny was primarily a disk jockey and he knew a great song when he heard it. He once went to a studio where a group had just recorded a new song. He thought it was absolutely brilliant and somehow got a copy of the song on tape which he proceeded to play over and over on his radio show, which resulted in multitudes of people trying to get their own copies of the song. The group was Queen, the song "Bohemian Rhapsody," and the rest as they say is history!
The producers told Queen to ditch the song because it was too long and would never be produced as a single so the demo record was lying there on the side, Kenny saw it and decided to take the record with him and play it on his Radio One slot. Many people rang up and asked about the record, and the producers were forced to bring it out as a single. If it wasn't for Kenny we would not have had Bohemian Rhapsody.
The first sketch was a parody of the TV series Dallas, hence the names Spam Spewing, R.J. and Miss Oily (Pam Ewing, J.R. and Miss Elly). The reason the actress playing Miss Oily kept changing was because they replaced the actress who played Miss Elly in Dallas, and everyone carried on as if nothing had happened.
The first bit was a recurring sketch called Dallasty. Obviously, he was playing both a JR Ewing parody and his wife, and the woman who changed every time the camera switched to her was taking the piss out of how they kept recasting certain characters. Miss Ellie in this case.
Bananarama are the most successful UK Girl Band of all time with over 30 top 50 chart hits. Kenny Everett died of AIDS aged 50. He was very popular as a wacky radio DJ in the 70s and with his wacky TV shows in the 80s.
Not at this point they weren't. This was from their first album which was produced by Jolley & Swain and Barry Blue. SAW's involvement began with their third album, and then only on a couple of tracks. The full collaboration began with their fourth album. The girls were also co-writers on many of their songs.
I remember seeing an old series where the presenters had to try a different challenge each week, one week it was to make a pop video for Bananarama, they seemed to have trouble finding a studio big enough to fit their egos in.
The Kenny Everett show was absolute anarchy but immensely funny. Try Captain Kremen and Carla - Brick Wall . 90 seconds of craziness. He also had a character called Cupid Stunt - ran for years without the BBC bosses realising what it was
Bananarama were NEVER, EVER my cup of tea, wholly due to their expansive catalogue and discography of (unnecessary and unremarkable) cover versions, rather than offering new and original material.
