As an American I don't know much about Canadian snacks. Today I am very interested to learn about what some of the most popular Canadian snack foods are that we can't get here in America. If you enjoyed the video feel free to leave a comment, like, or subscribe for more!

1. So Ah Caramel is a vanilla sponge cake with a cream and caramel top covered in chocolate. It is extremely sweet and definitely a favourite for many Canadians. It comes in a packet with two squares. 2. I have never seen Map-O-Spread, it's probably not a common item in the area of Canada where I live (I'm from Ontario). Also, maple is a natural sugar... you can actually boil maple syrup until it almost instantly turns into a sugar. Maple sugar is a popular replacement for white sugar. 3. Deep and Delicious cakes are amazing... they are a frozen cake that is moist and sweet but not overpowering. They come in chocolate, vanilla, swirl (chocolate and vanilla), and coconut. 4. Kraft Peanut butter is a sweeter peanut butter, less salty than other brands and is sold in Costco here. Kraft Peanut butter actually used to come in a glass bear container. 5. Maple Leaf Cookies are delicious... but they can vary depending on what company makes them. Some companies put two vanilla cookies with maple cream, some have two maple cookies with maple cream, or some have two maple cookies with vanilla cream. It just depends on what you like. My husband who is from Miami, loves maple cookies and it is all four of our sons favourite cookie. 6. Yes we have little Debbie but it's not as popular as Vachon. Jos Louis have definitely gone down in quality... it was much better 10 or 15 years ago. It now has a little bit of a fake chocolate taste. I used to love these as a child.

The thing most people keep overlooking about the McCain cakes is they are frozen and are ready so quickly after taking out of the freezer. Meaning the cakes are innately cool and refreshing which is something many baked cakes lack. Being recently frozen it also is able to retain its moisture better than a 'baked' good.

Kind sir, it is NOT just some chocolate cake. It's got a thickness to the icing and a bounce to the cake like no other. One issue with the Deep and Delicious cake is that if for any reason the icing ends up touching something, it adhears instantly to the surface and is ripped entirely from the cake with a fine layer of crumbs stuck to its underside XD There's also a carrot cake version. Haven't seen it in a while, but it was pretty good too. Not as thick as the chocolate one, but still delightful ❤😊

Sometimes, I would put a couple in a bowl and put a couple of scoops of ice cream along with a glass of milk or chocolate milk on the side. So damn addictive! McCain's is a New Brunswick success story. The Maritimes, especially New Brunswick and PEI, are known for growing potatoes, so that's where McCain's cut their teeth. (See also the Covered Bridge Potato Chip company that recently had a devestating fire). McCain's is a worldwide company, but their HQ is in a small town of a few thousand people 2 hours away from any major airport (okay 30-45 minutes if they go to Fort Fairfield, Maine I guess). They are known for Potato Chips mainly, but they also got into frozen pizzas and were successful there. (Pizza Pockets are ubiquitous up here because of them), and frozen juices. Deep and Delicious cakes are also one of their hits, a common treat you can get in the freezer section, it was a go-to "desert" to get or bring out for company after dinners. And also as a late night snack too. The freezing seems to make the sweetness even more delectable. McCain's is big in the states but probably not as much under their main brand names. Most specifically, because they are on the border with Maine, they do a lot of work in Maine and New England in general. They also have exclusive contracts with McDonalds to supply french fries (Apparently one of two companies that make McDs fries, and I think they are the exclusive supplier in Canada and other places in the world).

McCain doesn't make the frozen pizza anymore. That part of the business was sold to Dr. Oetker, a German company, who eventually retired the brand. Map-O-spread has a similar texture than peanut butter and Nutella, but the taste is maple. We also call it « maple butter » (« beurre d’érable », in Québec). It is SO DELICIOUS. We mainly put it on toasts. 😊 But I was surprised as well to know that it doesn’t countain any maple syrup 😮 … Kinda makes it a little less good in my mind, now that I know that.

Tarifs on dairy products. Hawkins cheeziees have real cheddar in them and are subject to tarifs. Québec and the feds limit milk production to keep supply low and prices high. We pay double or triple the rest of the world for dairy. Protectionist rackets get hit with tariffs. Now lumber companies have to pay into a replanting fund and are given some of the money to offset reforestation. The USA considers that a subsidy. Which the WTF ruled repeatedly it is not. As in it was thier money all along. Some folks think of a tax refund as a gift.

Hi Tyler ~ I have 2 boxes of “Maple Leaf” cookies - made by a Canadian company that sells on Amazon. If you are or anyone else is interested, I can share the brand and name of cookie. They are delightfully divine! Not as sweet as American versions , nor is the creamy filling “grainy” from excess sugar. Both the cookie and filling are creamy and smooth ~ and not too sweet! A couple of these sweet treats accompanied by a strong cup of Dark Roast Jumping Bean Coffee (Newfoundland coffee brand) and you have yourself a nice afternoon “pick-me-up” or JOLT - depending upon the number of cookies and cups of coffee you consume!😉 Hopefully, You and other will the Canadian brands if these cookies…some are certainly better than others and taste more “homemade” than others! I was fortunate to grow up with an extended family of aunts and both my mother and her father were Pastry Chefs, so I was fortunate to try nothing but “homemade” versions of everything, as that’s all that was in our home. I had the good sense and perhaps was expressing my “creative” gene, as I also draw/sketch with charcoals, dabble in watercolours, and experiment with other artistic materials (Candy blowing)…but…my first love is is being blessed with a grandfather and mother who taught me so much, and has become my passion! This afternoon, I’m making several loaves of Cinnamon Raisin Bread, along with a couple of savory Ciabatta loaves to give to my elderly neighbours! I enjoy giving my creations away, rather than eating them…so…my neighbours, the Salvation Army, senior complexes and the homeless are my “taste testers”, and in return, I end up with a heart full of JOY! Cheers!🇨🇦☺🇺🇸

When I was young, I lived in a town where there was a small Vachon cake factory. 2 days a week they opened the factory so that we could go and buy, at a discount, the boxes of cakes that had small defects and could not be sold to the general public. I remember my mom buying dozens of boxes and storing them in a big freezer in the basement... I miss those days when Vachon cakes were less sweet, more fluffy, and generous! I miss the raisin tarts since they don't exist anymore... 😞 By the way, maple syrup is our liquid gold, here in Quebec... ;-) There are A LOT of maple syrup producers in Quebec (simple to produce: you harvest the maple water from the maple trees and boil it to reduce the amound of water contained in it, concentrate the sugar, flavors and nutrients); we dont eat white sugar that much, maple syrup is our local sweetener... Just like cane sugar is the local sweetener in the West Indies, for exemple...

In Canada, maple sap starts running in the early spring. The sap is boiled until it reduces to syrup. We make an annual event of this happening, and families will head into the woods to "sugar bush camps", where they can observe the whole process, from start to finish. Many of these sugar bush camps also have petting zoos, hay rides, etc. These sugar bushes are all over the country, and are a nice break from normal winter misery, and a reminder that spring is near

Growing up in Montreal, there used to be a rivalry between Coke and Pepsi, respectively favoured by English & French, so the slang nickname for French Quebecois was (Pepsi). SORRY, just the facts. no offense intended. BTW, May Wests, etc., were originally made by the (Stuart"s) bakery, which was within walking distance from my home. Also, there is a Quebec cookie maker (Leclerc) that has bought out plants in PA, TN, and AZ. And the Dare company in Ontario bought the Viau brand from QC. Among many other products, they make the old Viau (Whippet) cookies, which are Montreal originals.

I think that Kraft Peanut Butter even made a pair of teddy bears that apparently synchronize between each other no matter the distance. They light up when one is holding it, or something like that. It had a cute commercial of a kid at camp and a father picks his up and the child’s lights up and cheers the home sick kid up. Mmmmm Maple cookies. Joe Lois are still around but I havent had it. The other three I mention are definitely my 90s treats. The peanut butter being the most common, then the Cakes and occasionally the maple cookie, which it is simply called. This is the first video that I have seen of you and if you want to see some Canadian stuff that is outside food, check out the Red Green Show. I worked really close to Vachon in Burlington Ontario. Sometimes on they way to work, the baking of their products was wafting through the air.

We have friends who used to live in Cobourg, ON. There is a factory there which makes Fruit Loops and dog food. You could tell which day was which depending on the smell. As I said to my friend, "Same loop, different topping"😂

*Sara Lee cakes used to be quite accessible in the early 1980s, my mom would buy the frozen ones often. The McCain is SOOOOO MUCH BETTER!*

Here's some more interesting peanut butter facts about Canada: up until a while ago we had three major kinds smooth, crunchy, and extra smooth (which basically had some kind of thin molasses in it, made it a bit too sweet in my eyes). These days we still have three kinds, but extra smooth is gone, and it's been replaced by dark (which uses dark roasted peanuts, and is amazing).

I was a landscaper for the dare family cottage. They were so lovely and on our last day of the summer season they told us ahead of time that we were welcome to bring our swimsuits and dive off of the dock and hangout with them since they were our last site of the day and it was a heat wave. We all had a pint on the dock and yes they put out some cookies haha. Their dog Lilly was super friendly and would come say hi sometimes. My one coworker never remembered her name so he called her cookie 😂

Quebequoi here, I keep all my vachon pastries (like ah caramel & jo louis) in the freezer as my father taught me. They're much better like this, they turn into ice cream cakes and they taste less sweet
