He was and still is hugely underrated, he died too soon at 68 in 2005, but his conversational style was hugely influential and ahead of it's time, a great story teller, not just a joke teller. He became very famous in the 70's and 80's on British television, much loved and much missed.
@@PanglossDr No indeed he was never underrated, he was a comic genius. Thankfully we were able to be blessed with his unique brilliance in the 70s 80s and 90s, todays woke brigade who take offence at everything even when none is intended would have had him cancelled. I wonder why they think only their views matter and nobody else's does. We are heading towards a dystopian society.
@@deenieteenie3934 - Likewise, those people who complain about the "woke brigade." Why do they think only THEIR views matter? And anyway, he would never get "cancelled" now. Look at the comedians like Jimmy Carr who go far further than Allen ever did. He was an atheist from a family of journalists who was bothered by the idea of too powerful governments or police or even nuns! And who finished his act by wishing "your god goes with you."
I saw him at a London theatre many years ago and my ribs were in agony from me laughing so much. A master of his craft. He could also more than hold his own in dramatic acting roles. May your god go with you!
I adore Dave Allen, he was my favourite comic growing up in the 70's. As original and as funny as the Pythons but obviously different ways of presenting a joke, but that man was a genius and I will love him tillI die.
He started out as a journalist in Ireland (he was raised there), and later, he hosted the show using the stage name 'Dave Allen', and the title of his shows broadcast from the mid 1970's was 'Dave Allen at Large'. I found his sketches very funny, using the settings of the church, the Shakespearean plays, classic movies (Sherlock Holmes), as well as advice on relationships (men & women). One great master of situation comedy for many generations to enjoy...
Dave Allen wasn't just raised in Ireland...HE WAS IRISH. He was NEVER British as some people think.. We Irish were so proud of him.☘ You can't beat the Irish sense of humour.
Hi JPS Dave Allen was one of the best comedians of his time, used to watch him a lot as my dad was a fan of his. he always used to end his show by saying "May your God go with you" . RIP DAVE ALLEN 1936 -2005 BYE for now from Debra in Wales 🏴
Young man, you have got his entire back catalogue to entertain and amaze you. Sad;y, Dave is no longer with us, but in theb’70s he was the highlight of our television week. Here in the UK. There’s so much more from him for you to enjoy.
Went & saw Dave Allen live once. He was amazing with that gorgeous Irish lilt. In fact he was so funny I couldn't stop laughing. I laughed so much I couldn't breathe & I wanted him to stop talking for a moment so I could catch my breath. Sure it would have been bizarre thing to have asphixiated yourself through laughing too much!!! 🤣
Dave Allan is and for ever will be , and Icon.... He is one of a kind , and can make something funny out of anything that happens in life.. He was especially funny about the Catholic Church ...One of my favorites, was a very funny skit about Catholic funerals ..Please watch it , and die laughing !!
A story: back in 1975, I was on an airliner landing at Gatwick, when, at a very late stage, WHOOMPH! Full throttle, and a steep banking climb, the sewage works at the end of the runway flashing before your eyes just outside the window. Climbing and levelling off, the pilot came on the PA (at that time, they were all ex-RAF bomber pilots): “Sorry, chaps, bit of a bish. A Russian airliner taxied on to the runway just ahead of us. Didn't want to cause an international incident by crashing into it, what? Ha ha. Never mind, better luck next time”! My friend (a poor flyer who was already sweating with fear before all this), just put his head in his hands and started to cry.
It was great to see you genuinely enjoy this master of comedy JP. He was enormously popular and so funny not like modern comedians who think it's enough to use profanity to be funny.I advise them to watch Dave at his best.
Loved this, particularly as I used to be cabin crew. He joined us for drinks in Singapore, was VERY generous yet quite shy. He later said that half of his jokes and stories came from cabin crew!

Dave Allen was a great comedian he used to have his own show on UK TV loved watching him, great at ghost stories with a silly twist at the end of the tale. Fantastic airline story ... and so true !!!
thank heavens for the video at that time , i am old enough to remember sitting in front of the tv and watching the great Dave Allen live , yes he smoked yes he drank live on tv , the man was so funny and could find humour in such regular things without being rude or abusive my dad was lucky enough to see him in person a live even and he was apprently just as good , lucky you milleniials will get to see and hear his performance
In a documentary about his life it was said he forbid any of his broadcast shows to be repeated in full. Only now we have RU-vid can we watch the genius at work again, and then only a tiny fraction of his great work.
Seen it multiple times, but the “taking out the teeth” bit gets me every time. Benny Hill, Long dry summer is hilarious too. Easy to understand humor and no pretences.
Since they banned smoking. The airlines reduced costs and removed the air filtration systems. Less maintenance costs and the equipment removal, reduced the weight so they could add at least 5 more passengers. Depending on the size of the aircraft.
I know you've watched Dave Allen on religion which is so funny, but there is a separate video of him talking about Adam and Eve. It's hilarious and well worth a look.
Yeah, sit at the back. That way you get 0.7 seconds longer to be terrified as the people in front compress into that mountain. On second thoughts, get a seat as near to the pilot as possible and be first to meet your maker.
There is not a stand up comic today that can even come close to Dave Allen. Stand up comics today just seem to think the more swearing and crudeness they can put in their shows the funnier they are.
Dave Allen was great my dad watched him late at night I wasn't allowed because of the language drinking and smoking. But as I got older I would ask my dad if I could watch. He was so funny. I need to join the patreon to see blocked stuff. Have a good day. Xx
I'm 54 yrs old and I use to watch dave allen when I was a kid. I still take about him now. R.I.P dave allen. The funeral sketch was one of the best sketches ever made.
He would sit in a chair and have a one hour show. He would just tell stories and sip his scotch. A couple of pre recorded skits. He held the show without doing a thing he was brilliant

Yea Joel Dave teaching kid ⌚ time is one of the best. BTY this dates from early 1990s thereabouts. He has older sketches dating back to the 60s and 70s. !👍
Dave Allen told the greatest joke I ever heard. I saw it on tv when I was young, but have never been able to find a clip of it. It starts as a scary story, but the punchline was iconic.
On my flight to Japan back in 2001, the two in-flight movies were a marine biology film about sharks and another documentary about the Pacific theater in WWII.

If you like Dave Allen's take on flying, Bill Connolly's appearance in New York in 1989 on the the same subject was brilliant. Highly recommend you watch this which is 7.52 and a half minutes long
You asked when this was. Dave Allen did tv shows regularly from the early 1970s to the late 80's. Can't specify exactly what year but looking at him gave wise probably in the 80's.
Probably the 90s, I saw him live a couple of times in the early 1990s, the first time I went with friends to see him at the Hexagon in Reading and then I organized for a group of work colleagues to go to one of his shows in London.
Ah yes, back in the ‘60’s the queues at the airport were the longest for the smoking areas and only a handful of people joined the queue for the non smoking areas. 20 years later, the exact opposite was the case. Now of course there are no smoking areas on board aircraft at all.
@@showmoke Heard this but don’t know if it’s true, the air quality inside the aircraft was better when you could smoke ( because of the filters) 🤔, and the air quality now is stale. If that makes sense.
Hey its great to see an American who enjoys one of our greatest Stand-Up Comedians in the UK from the 80’s (I think), because guy was from a Long time ago!
My mother always liked Dave Allen, I think he's good too. However, its one of those things that makes me think of her as soon as I see him. I guess because he wasn't really my generation. I'm 49 in a few days time. Comedy went through big changes in my teens. I grew up laughing at Bill Hicks and a bunch of British comedians who were called the "New Wave". Check out a sit com called The Young Ones if you want some British humour of my generation. Its about 4 students living in a house share. But its really nothing like Friends. 😆
