To answer your question about “celebrating Christian holidays the Dutch way”, basically means that although we are mostly not religious, we still like the idea of family gatherings, sharing, dining together and giving/unwrapping presents with the family. The Dutch word “gezellig” roughly translate to “cozyness” and that’s what it is all about.

The euthanasia issue. I'm Dutch, my sister died of cancer in 2019. She was transferred to the hospital because she was in too much pain to stand. She was kept on morphine and was told she wouldn't be able to leave the hospital anymore. Her condition worsened as the tumor grew, pressing on her stomach and other vital organs. She could no longer eat, drink or use the bathroom. She was just hanging on, drugged to fuck by the constant morphine. Rather than living like a dying house plant for maybe another week or 3, she opted to go out on her terms by choosing euthanasia. She was surrounded by her family and close friends as she passed, peacefully falling asleep to the music she had picked out. I miss her dearly, but the end she chose was in a way very beautiful and comforting.

Sometimes I think people treat their pets better than their own family. I know this feeling seeing your loved one suffer so much to a point that you just want them to be free of pain even if this means they are going to die. It's hard to say goodby forever, but it would be selfish and inhuman to hold on to someone who is terminally ill and suffering when the end is near. Cancer sucks.

I am Turkish and I was born in the Netherlands. I can remember when I was a little girl, my grandpa from Turkey came over to visit us in the Netherlands. He is such a tall man and he actually never saw tall man in Turkey. One day while he is in the Netherlands he went out to the grocery store and saw all these tall dutchies. He was so in shock he finally saw people from his height. 🤣 it was so funny to see his reaction on that, because we didn’t knew better. But for him it was something so new to see. All of a sudden he wasn’t the tallest anymore. I will never forget that time. May you Rest In Peace grandpa ❤️

Hi, I'm from the Netherlands. I noticed that you were curious about the windmills and if they are still useful. Well, they are very useful! My dad has a craft profession in restoring old windmills. They keep the old mills in wonderful condition and functioning! My dad (with his work) once had a project on de Zaanse Schans (shown in your video) to rebuild an old windmill that was destroyed. It was originally build in 1680, and destroyed in 1942. My dad helped it rebuild in two years, from 2005 to 2007. It's a saw mill that cuts wood. It's called: Het Jonge Schaap. I hoped you liked this piece of information :). Greetings from The Netherlands (Very much in the middle of the flood, may it ever happen)

About the birth thing: healthcare is A LOT different in The Netherlands. You basically have a medical or a non medical pregnancy, and you’ll discuss with your doctor what you want. If you’re a medical pregnancy they’ll recommend a hospital birth, if you’re not they’ll basically let you choose. And you always have a midwife with you, I’m not sure how this is in the US but our midwifes all have to go through the same educational program so they know what they’re doing.

As a Dutch person; I can confirm barely anyone worries about the dijken breaking. We trust them quite well although recently there were some water issues in limburg happening causing quite big floods in the province (& Germany) resulting in quite some extensive damages (mainly in Germany). Also yep, most people make their broodje hagelslag like this; bread - butter - sprinkles. Oh one more thing; I’m surprised to see they said the Dutch people generally like the royal family. Many people around here and many people on social media complain about them all the times due to their salary, the purchases they make and the (according to people online/around) lack of value they add to the nation. I myself don’t have anything against them but I would like to see maybe a decrease in the salary (being part of the royal family, 18+ years of age and being the heir to the throne or king/queen gets you a salary of €1.5M per year) and transparency about what they spend it on (not every little thing like groceries or clothes but like the bigger purchases)

As a Brit, I find the Dutch water management amazing. On one of my trips, I cycled across the Houtribdijk between Enkhuizen and Lelystad. My impression was, it was overengineered, and could withstand anything, barring a major tsunami, so it doesn't worry me my trips are mainly spent below sea-level. There's a saying: 'an Englishman's home is his castle'. Not many can boast moats and drawbridges the way the Dutch can. I stayed in Gouda, and anywhere else the street would have been a narrow urban street. Here it was split by a canal and an amazing view every time I went out.

8:20 It was meant for defense, so every angle could be defended with just a few cannons (weapons). 24:10 We legalize it so the government can control it, it makes it safer for the prostitutes and there are rules. If it already happens if you want to or not, rather be safe and help them. 24:40 If you suffer from cancer, you already lived most of your life (let's say your 80). Some rather end it in a peaceful way than waiting for your heart to fail. It's not easy to get euthanasia there are many procedures to follow, so it's not like everyone can choose it, it's only a last result for the people that are really suffering, it's maybe crude but better than someone jumping in front of a train.
@Julia-lk8jn
@Julia-lk8jn 2 года назад
*This.* Nations and religions have tried to outlaw prostitution for centuries, and it works just as great as outlawing alcohol: it moves into the underground, is uncontrolled, women and girls are kidnapped and forced into prostitution (so you basically got rid of prostitution and now have sex slavery, great), there's of course no health care for the prostitutes so diseases spread, and since there's so much money in it, there's going to be a lot of bribes to keep the law enforcement selectively blind. Meanwhile, rich men will still get their jollies off with a lovely photogenic mistress, and everybody looks the other way. Oh yes, and some politician / cleric can sell himself as "fighting for morals and family values yay". No thanks. Euthanasia: Honestly, if I had to spent he last few months lying on my back in a hospital, either in pain or drugged out, and just waiting to die? _And_ knowing that I'm sucking up money and resources that could get other people back onto their feet? Yep. One over-dose of morphine, if you please. Anybody who feels that no, life in itself is worth living no matter how limited, or in pain, you are - okay, absolutely their decision. But it should be that: a personal decision.

About the euthanasia thing. My uncle asked for euthanasia because he was dying due to extremely advanced lung cancer. He was wearing an oxygen tank on him at all times and had to sleep upright in his bed. If they had denied him euthanasia, he would’ve died a slow, drawn out death of oxygen deprivation until he eventually suffocated to death. This is why a lot of people in the Netherlands and Belgium support euthanasia, because if you’re doomed to die, at least allow the people to die with some dignity and comfort. It’s not that just about anyone can file for euthanasia, as there are several rules to follow.

Something similar happened with my grandpa, he got euthanasia when i was 4. I'm just gonna explain Dutch festive days over here: 1. Easter. Easter is celebrated with a breakfast or lunch, which contain bread, eggs and chocolate. When you have little children or like tradition you hide chocolate eggs in the garden/in a room and search for them. 2. Christmas. Christmas is mostly similar to the American version. You have dinner, give presents and are together with your family. 3. Sinterklaas. 'Who doesn't know him?' Sinterklaas is a holiday mostly aimed at children. It is kinda similar to Christmas. Sinterklaas is an old man who gives presents to children in the Netherlands. If the children have been nice they get presents and food, but if they have been naughty they get 'the roe'. Sinterklaas has helpers called black Piet. They are black because they go through chimneys which contain cinder. The children will put their shoe next to the chimney or door and sing a song. (sometimes they would also put a carrot in it for the horse or a poem or list about what they want.) 4. Kings day. Kings day is a special day for all Dutch people. Children are free from school. There are markets with people selling stuff everywhere. It's just a big orange party. If there are more please remind me in the comments. P. S. These are they ways my family celebrates these days, so it might be a bit different from the way you may celebrate them.

Where I am from most decide to celebrate either Sinterklaas or Christmas with gifts. We had gifts on Sinterklaas also a few for adults and not just he kids and when we grew up we made surprise gifts for each other. When we were young we did get together with the whole family on Sinterklaas but most of the time it was just our family and during Christmas we visit or get visitors from other family like grandparents, aunts and uncles with their kids.

As far as I know when people give birth at home there is always a specialised nurse present. There is also always a family doctor on call should the need arise, and generally no one lives more than half an hour away from a hospital including the wait for an ambulance. As a result, the maternity death rate is extremely low at 5 per 100.000 live births as opposed to the US' 19.

"Euthanasia just doesn't quite sit right with my stomach" You know what doesn't sit right with MY stomach? Forcing people to live a life they don't want to live, whittling away while experiencing huge amounts of pain. Of course, this also ties in with our lack of religion. I don't know if this exists with English subtitles, but there is this show called "over my dead body" (over also meaning about, so also "about my dead body") in which terminally ill young people are followed through the last months of their lives. Most of the ones I've seen have died through euthanasia. Over the course of the series you see these people slowly lose a little piece of themselves every episode, and when the time comes around to talk about their euthanasia that's scheduled for next week, there's just such a sense of peace. At least they have a goal, they know when the suffering stops and they get to end it on their own terms, instead of waiting for their bodies to get so weak they can't even swallow and they drown on their own spit. What an incredible show. So yes, go euthanasia. Just the availability of legal euthanasia is a big reason to want to live in the Netherlands.

If they decide life is not for them anymore, they should be allowed to go. It should be a human right, not a crime. (of course with the right safety measures and procedures in place; if someone feels like they're a burden to their friends and family, that's not a valid reason to end one's life; the decision has to be that person's own)

@gydigigytha8367 2 года назад
One thing maybe added to it; to be euthanized is also very HARD in the Netherlands. They don't just say: yeah go ahead you can die now. You have to go through several talks with psychiatrists and other experts to decide if this really is what you want. You cannot just do it. So even if we allow it; it is still very hard to actually get it. Same for sick people; you really have to tell them you are incurably ill to even get it. And even then; you cannot even managed to get euthanized until you have done a lot of talks with doctors and yada yada a whole trail to get through to them. The fact that it is hard to get the permission to do so shouldn't be left out in this discussion so people do not misunderstand this fact of the rules we do have in the Netherlands about it.

Two years ago my grandmother (89yr) opted for euthanasia. She had breast cancer for three years and her breast was removed. She had chemotherapy for a year, which she absolutely hated. But the cancer disappeared. However, a year later the cancer came back and she was not doing well. She had to do chemo again. After which she decided to perform euthanasia in consultation with her children and doctor. She did not want to suffer any more pain from the chemotherapy. Obviously I was shocked because she asked for euthanasia. But she said I am 89 years old and have had a beautiful life. I have constant pain now and haven't slept for days. The nice thing was that everyone in the family could say goodbye one by one, and say their last words. Moaning in pain, she still postponed three days to speak to all of the family members in person. Later I was satisfied that she did euthanasia, it was her choice, but above all she was no longer in pain.

that's what I kinda hate with us as a world population. we don't want our elders to die at all just because WE can't handle grief well. whereas if you ask a lot of elders if they're scared of death, a lot would probably say that they're content in life and don't mind it. like my grandma of 96 years old has become so lonely thanks to fucking Covid. she normally went to game nights like bingo to see her friends and just have some fun. but now none of that is happening under the guise of "protecting the elders" when in reality the elders often get depressed as hell this way. along with that she doesn't really go for walks alone either cause yknow, 96 years old. so now she just sits in her home day after day, and it gets harder and harder for her to find the literal will to life. she told my mom "I've lived a good life, I don't mind dying, just let me have some fun in my old days" and she's totally right.

We do not wish to see our pets suffer. So why should we humans suffer for weeks/months/years? When we are terminally ill and there is no hope of getting better only pain and suffering. So many things just blew her mind but, throughout our adventures, she just kept saying: "It's just so dang flat!!" I think one of her top three things she just loved was when we went to see the tulip fields in bloom followed by the flower auction house. She loved flowers and never, ever had seen so many flowers. I live in the Netherlands and the star fortresses where important for the defence of Amsterdam Olso known as the stelling of Amsterdam
@timonheidema6837
@timonheidema6837 3 года назад
So, I'll explain why the fortress towns are star-shaped. So, historically, these places were forts (evidently), most commonly known by the name "star forts". It has this particular star-shaped design, as it was the optimal design for defence. You could shoot your cannons in every direction, without hitting your own fort. Each point of the star was able to cover the dead angles of the others. In addition, by making it star-shaped, it was more likely to deflect cannonballs. If you shoot a cannonball directly at a wall of 90 degrees, the wall will take the full impact. But by making it star-shaped, the cannonballs would scrape past the wall, rather than impact in the wall, instead. This limited the points of attacks for the attackers, who could only effectively attack at the 90 degree walls, which were powerfully protected by the points by the star.
@EvilFookaire
@EvilFookaire 3 года назад
In addition to what Timon already pointed out, these star-shaped forts were also designed with the idea of "managing" where the enemy could and couldn't go they ever got past the walls (while the walls would still be intact) - in a sense standardizing some tactics which allowed remaining defenders to essentially set up kill-zones inside the fort. Obviously this also involved some developments regarding infantry and other branches, but the star-shaped forts were where this all came together.

Something that often surprises my foreign friends, is that we have basically 3 days of Christmas.. There's Christmas Eve, First and Second Christmas day and nowadays we unofficially also have Third Christmas day, because how else are we gonna visit everyone in the family 🤪 Also, carrots used to be purple until we decided we wanted them to be orange. Warm toast would melt the chocolate sprinkles (we also have fruit flavored sprinkles) so it's generally used on normal bread with butter. It's definitely not uncommon for people to have peanut butter and sprinkles sandwiches though! Also, don't forget that America was founded pretty late in comparison to European countries, so yes, we do have a lot of old builds left from all through the ages. The windmills still standing aren't used much anymore, but several are definitely still functioning. Some buildings have the stamp for historical landmarks and therefore must remain true to origin and functioning even after renovations are needed. That's how we (like probably many other countries) try to preserve history. Aaaaaand if you ever get the chance, come visit the Efteling, as it was the inspiration for a lot of the Disney parks and rides, you're welcome 😜

The reason Star-shaped fortresses are star-shaped is because it's easier to defend them. If you were to, for example, be an enemy and manage to reach the wall then archers on the "spikes" would be able to shoot at you, while this would be difficult with a normal wall.

In the Netherlands and most of Europe "Home birth" does NOT mean "unsupervised birth". It just means they give birth at home, accompanied by a trained and usually highly skilled midwife. The midwife usually already has accompanied a long part of the pregnancy and will also be responsible for the first few weeks after care of the mother and the new born.. aside from the regular doctor visits.

Just stumbled onto your video, figured I'd add my own personal touch to the Phillips part. My great Opa (great grandfather) was a foreman inside the Phillips factory in Eindhoven. This was back when the radio sets etc were built with alot of wood (Family have been carpenters for literal hundreds of years). His son, My Opa, decided after working under his Dad for a few weeks, that he would rather not. Opa helped rebuilding after the war, and travelled alot as well. Sadly he died when before I got to know him (I live in New Zealand, my parents emigrated in the 1980s), but the stories of Opa's sense of humour and all his adventures mean alot to me.

The polders have very strong pumping stations and we have a lot of water ways and drainage systems to deal with heavy rain. hi let me explain our holidays to you: we have 3 major holidays easter, christmas and an unknown holiday among Americans (and probably the rest of the world) Sinterklaas and we also have carnival in the south of the Netherlands. christmas: first we have a big christmas meal then most catholics go to church on christmas eve with family and go home around 10pm at midnight Santa Claus comes to put presents under the Christmas tree. easter: we often have an Easter breakfast and then (again) most Catholics go to church then the Easter bunny has visited and the small children can look for the hidden eggs then there is an Easter lunch. Sinterklaas: Sinterklaas is something especially for small children. a month in advance, Sinterklaas arrives with the parcel boat and the Sinterklaas party has actually already started because children are allowed to put their shoes in front of the fireplace about twice a week, then they sing Sinterklaas songs and the next morning looks or sweets such as meringues of chocolate coins or gingerbread cookies or there is a small present in it on december 5th, sinterklaas's birthday is celebrated and then children get some bigger gifts for the rest we also have holidays such as Halloween, Pentecost, commemoration of death, liberation day and carnival
