1:45 How the German recycling system keeps going and why we‘ve come up with it? That is an interesting question and surprisingly rarely asked. Essentially, it started with returning bottles for a deposit, which is a practice that breweries, mineral water companies and juice producers had come up with in order to save production costs for glass bottles, iirc as early as the 1920s - but better don’t quote me on that, because it’s just some time within the range of „between the 1880s and the 1950s“. During the 1960s and 1970s, people also realized that with landfills / sites for deposing trash overflowing it became pretty much impossible to keep up with the amount of trash produced. As a result, the federal government came up with „Grüner Punkt“, a Recycling System that organized separating the types of waste and increased recycling quotas - although admittedly unsatisfactory amounts still go to „thermic recycling“, a.k.a., incineration plants. At least a lot of them are nowadays also used to produce heating or even serve as means for energy production, albeit more as a handy side-effect. Over the last 4 decades, legislation has been developed and fine-tuned to deal with the effects of a consumerist modern society - and I personally think of it as a „success story“.

I'd say coming up with both Oktoberfest (1l Beer mugs) and Aspirin is certainly a win-win situation with a lot of synergy 😀

How was the food when you were in Austria? Culinary-wise, there is almost everything that you can find in Germany and much more.

_Fingerspitzengefühl_ literally means _fingertip feeling._ It refers to an intuitive sense or instinct for the right way to handle a situation, often implying a delicate touch or nuanced understanding. In everyday use, it describes the ability to navigate complex or sensitive matters with tact and skill, relying on a keen sense of what's appropriate or effective in a given context.

You are so nice!!! ☺We Germans ourselves increasingly have the subjective feeling that everything is fading away and that everything German that we have become known for and are respected for in the world is dissolving more and more! 🥺🥴

4:47 The Wall was, in terms of its function, mostly to keep people locked away within „communist“ GDR. Think of the GDR as a prison the size of a whole country, and you’re quite close to reality. Mind you, not a US Maximum Security Prison, but a German prison after the prison reforms of the 1920s - yet a prison nevertheless.

"Fingerspitzengefühl" actually refers to handling stuff not just with precision, but CARE. And the "fact" that Germans are mad about sausages ... well, we aren't. Yes, we have a lot of sausages, but they're regarded more as street or carnival food -- or a quick, cheap alternative for better meat at a barbecue. We also have a lot of hearty stews with sausage, or use them as cold cuts/deli meat on sandwiches. Frankly, except for the latter, I cook sausages (of any type) maybe once a month, if that -- they may be tasty, but very fatty, too.
