To clarify the official national anthem is ‘Amhrán na bhFiann’ and then ‘Ireland’s call’ was written for the rugby team and is sung at all their games.
The players aren't getting emotional because they're sad, it's more out of pride. They are representing their country. Also, it's two separate songs. The second song, Ireland's Call is only played at rugby matches as the Republic and Northern Ireland are on the same team so players from NI may not be comfortable singing the Irish anthem.
@Louise Mcilwaine you're from Northern Ireland. 28% of Northern Ireland identify as Irish so 72% aren't irish. Look at the census of Northern Ireland under national identity
@Louise Mcilwaine I'm from the Republic so I won't argue with you about your national identity but people from NI do have the right to choose whether or not they identify as Irish or British and I understand why some may not feel comfortable singing the Irish anthem.
The first anthem performed was "Amhrán na bhFiann" , the Irish language version of the national anthem of the Republic of Ireland (known in English as "A Soldiers' Song"). The second one was "Ireland's Call", which is performed at rugby games where Ireland are playing as some players are from Northern Ireland, and so may take offence to being associated with the Irish national anthem.
Whilst it is almost exclusively sung in Irish, an Oireachtas bill in 2019 states that it is the official anthem regardless of whether it is in Irish, in English, or just instrumental www.oireachtas.ie/en/bills/bill/2019/3/

The reason they have two is because the first one u listened to is irish and the people in north Ireland (who play for Ireland their is only 1 rugby team in Ireland)dont want to learn irish so they made a new anthem in english for them celeabrating both nations. Hope that clears it up a little bit
It's two different songs stuck together. The first part ("The Soldier's Song") is the traditional Irish anthem, and the second part ("Ireland's Call") was written in 1995 for the Rugby World Cup. Which was a shame, because Irish rugby already had a great unofficial anthem, "The Fields of Athenry", and I wish they'd adopted that instead. Sadly, I've always found "Ireland's Call" rather cheesy... sorry, Ireland!
@@galoglaich3281 I knew that "Fields of Athenry" was fairly recently written, but it somehow feels more "traditional" than it is. Oddlly enough, I find it shares this characteristic with Scotland's adopted anthem (Flower of Scotland) which was itself only written in the mid-1960s.
@@galoglaich3281 Agreed! They certainly get the crowds going and, although my allegiance is with Wales, I always enjoy singing them along with the Irish and Scottish fans.
The Fields of Athenry could still be deemed as a polarising one for an anthem thats meant to be inclusive to those who see themselves as british as well as Irish. prefer it as as the spirit rousing song it is.
@@everyonelovesdee True, although by the same token I have to wonder why (British) Loyalists are happy to sing about answering _Ireland's_ call. It's a complex situation, that's for sure :)
i am late to this video but, the reason it sounds like it’s a war song is because it is! it’s called amrhan an bhfiann which means the soldiers song :)
It's the only team in any sport to have 2 anthems because the irish rugby team play as an island ( North Ireland and Republic of ireland) where as in every other sport we play as North and South....that is why it is so special as we are trying to unify our country....thanks for watching
Yeah we have two because in rugby there is two jurisdictions playing for one team Northern Ireland and the Republican. So at home games the Irish national anthem is played and then the joint team one Ireland’s call is played. When we play away only Ireland’s call is played.

It’s the only sport where we play as one team. The Irish national anthem is only sung for “home games” played in Dublin. There is only ONE Irish national anthem, the other is for those who recognize British occupation in the six counties, and don't want to upset the crown loyalist minority.
