"Nel blu dipinto di blu" also known as "volare" (1958) became a huge international hit and has been covered many times.

I knew I had definitely heard it before. The name Volare I remember.

@@bigkevreacts The song 'Volare' was a big hit in the USA in an english version sung by Dean Martin

That was probably the version I've heard over the years. My grandpa was a Dean Martin fan.

I think it reached the 1st position on top chart in US and won 2 Grammys (for best record of the year and best song of the year).

Also, the song in 2017 with the gorilla isn't really a gimmick. The song actually has a really deep meaning which is pretty complex. Its sort of about the superficial lifestyle of westerners and the fact that in the end its stupid because we are all naked ape's so thats why they had the gorilla on stage. But they probably could have done the staging in a way that non Italian speakers can understand.

Italy is probably my favourite country in the contest. They have been my favourite 8 times: 1956, 1958, 1970, 1984, 1987, 1990, 2019 and 2020. Between 1998 and 2010 Italy left mainly because of lack of interest in the contest by both Italy's boradcaster and the Italian public (which is slightly weird since they have always sent their biggest stars). They have their own song competition called the Sanremo Music Festival (which is what Eurovision is based off of) that they are more interested in. However, very recently Eurovision has started to get a bit more popular in Italy.

Thanks for letting me know. I was curious why they left for so long.

It's not weird Italy sent big stars. A part from the Sanremo winners choices, the others Italian artist are big, just because there are a lot of big professional artists and Italy treat ESC like they do with every festival, starting from Sanremo of course (which is so strong). Italy sent big artist (not always the really biggest ones, obviously) but the songs are totally random, because, Italy, as everyone knows, don't even try to win (and the huge Battiato never participated as a singer even in Sanremo, just saying). It's just participating, and some songs, even the most appreciated abroad, even some winner, are basically unknown to the Italians. Insieme: 1992 is not a thing in Italy. As an Italian (alive but very young in the '90s) I've heard Insieme just because the ESC performance.

Insieme 1992 (together 1992). It was dedicated to the 1992 and scheduled begin of EU. HE sings about european nation getting together. It was a powerful message that happened 2 years later. Do not forget that message also counts in these songs that win, beside the country popularity and theme of the year. Some countries are less popular than others. Also, vote is a bit political too.

One of the reasons italy has done so well is that their selection process, san remo, is something seen as more important and prestigious than Eurovision itself. The winners dont even have to go to Eurovision because its not the main point of the festival. More often than not the winner does accept through. The years in modern times (post 2011 return) where the winner of san remo declined to go was, funnily enough, the two years they actually did relatively poorly 2014 and 2016
@bigkevreacts

Brividi is such a brilliant song, and both the guys singing it are genuinely great artists, but for some reason it just did not translate well in that finale. Blanco is so young, I think he was only 18 there. It just didn’t quite land, which is unfortunate, because again, it’s a very, very good song. Not just for Eurovision, but as a song.

Francesco Gabbani's song wasn't gimmicky, it was a critique on Western people's mindset

In 1956 there were 7 countries competing, with 2 songs each. The juries were at the venue, only the winner was announced, so that's why it says 'place unknown' for the other countries that participated. The official results got lost, besides the winner. Great reaction again 😁 I hope you will do a reaction to the Netherlands at some point.

Even though Eurovision is an Italian invention, Italians learned of its existence around 2015, before that it wasn't even broadcast on TV. Italy did not participate from 1998 to 2010 due to total disinterest. In Italy we have the San Remo Festival, from which the Eurovison derives, for us only that is important.

To understand Battiato you need an Encyclopedia and an Italian vocabulary (if you are Italian I mean).

Sweden, Ukraine and Italy are the powerhouses in Eurovision, especially the modern era. By the way, you should react to a recap of all the 2020 Eurovision songs. Eurovision 2020 is definitely the strongest year ever and unfortunately the only one which has gotten cancelled.

As an Italian, I have to say that actually, Ricchi e Poveri and Al Bano & Romina are pretty famous, but - I tell you - definitely not TOO good for the Italian average. Very popular, very ESC, but among the worst ones compared to the other participants, artistically speaking, especially because those songs.

Greets from Germany.
