One of the reasons that Assange didn't believe he would get a fair trial in the USA was that the US Government had rejected his defence of freedom of speech, stating that the First Amendment only applied to US citizens. So according to the USA, Americans can say whatever they like, but no one else can criticise America.

Not just a non-US citizen, a journalist by every measure of the word. The US used it's power and leverage across the world to try to punish him for doing journalism. So the American Evil Empire responds to evidence of them doing Evil Empire stuff by ... doing more Evil Empire stuff.

I’m an American 🇺🇸 living in Australia 🇦🇺 in the Blue Mountains and we have a cafe called Wiki Leaks. First time I went in I got a basic cappuccino and said I liked the name of the place. Massive overreach of US law. He was not a US citizen. He published information. As did many others. A major failing of British law, and prior Australian government diplomacy. Current Australian government has been cleaning up the diplomatic mess of the prior government. Assange is a victim of these circumstances. As the Aussie PM said "it doesn't matter what you think about what Julian has done, the situation had just gone on for too long and he needed to be brought back to Australia." It was 14 years of either being in the Ecuadorian Embassy and the Bellmarsh Prison which is one of their maximum security prisons. As Julian's lawyer, Jennifer Robinson, said: "he was just doing his job as a journalist". She was the lady with him coming off the plane. Julian went to Saipan, a US Pacific territory, rather than mainland USA, as that was part of the agreement reached by Australia's Ambassadors. Our US and UK Ambassadors accompanied him to Court in Saipan to make sure the deal was kept to. Julian will now take time out to be with his family and heal. Australia is happy his situation has come to an end. The White House still said he did wrong.

At the end of the day Julian Assange pleaded guilty to a felony charge of violating the US Espionage Act. Whatever you think of the man and his actions, do not confuse issues of morality with points of law. When you stand trial, the prosecution has to show that what you did was unlawful - it has nothing to do with right or wrong. What people have to understand is that whistleblowers (and I am one of them) do what they do purely out of conscience and accept the consequences whatever they may be, which includes going to prison.
@jessfinlayson1697
@jessfinlayson1697 3 месяца назад
Unfortunately though there are thousands, if not millions of innocent people around the world that have had no choice but to say they are guilty to get a plea deal with a shitty but less extreme punishment because they didn't have a strong enough defense and the risk of trial was too great. Yes that's not really the case here but technically the prosecution didn't have to prove anything, other than meeting the minimum standards to press the charges. But I do want to sincerely thank you and other whistleblowers for willingly knowing and accepting the risk and sometimes putting you lives on the line when you discover injustice or corruption going unchecked!!! You are amazing human beings!!!
@optimusmaximus9646
@optimusmaximus9646 3 месяца назад
@@jessfinlayson1697Hello. Thank you for your comments and kind words. I think it just comes down to how much one can take before you get just sick and tired of the system. My experiences as a whistle-blower are not unique but are shared by all who have made the bold decision to expose corruption. It takes great courage to speak up against an injustice even if it means suffering recrimination and the loss of one’s professional standing, friends, job, income and home, as I did. Being cast out and branded a trouble-maker, a fabricator of lies and deceit, and someone not to be trusted, the consequences of being thrown to the wolves are both profound and far reaching. What a lot of people on the outside fail to realise is that a whistle-blower seeks to expose a corrupt and unfair system so that the whole community benefits, even though it may appear that self-interest is their only motivation. The personal cost of fighting the system has been significant, but fighting the prejudice of those who accept without question the word of authority has been even harder. But even if no one does take notice, we are ultimately compelled by our conscience; notoriety or (if I could be so crass as to say) "fame" is never the motivation. What is disappointing about Assange, who is a self-proclaimed anarchist has become an overnight celebrity and national hero, which he seems to enjoy. Even our own prime minister called Assange up to congratulate him on his arrival back in Australia. To my knowledge he is the first prime minister to welcome a convicted felon back to Australia. Yes, I understand Assange's conviction was cloaked in politics but the PM's lack of judgement was appalling. I didn't see him calling up David McBride when the latter was sent down the river for exposing alleged war crimes in Afghanistan by Australian soldiers.

Regarding the comments being turned off, you can thank the Australian High Court (equivalent to the US Supreme Court but without as much crazy) for that. They decided some years ago that the owner of things like Facebook pages and RU-vid channels was deemed the publisher and were therefore liable to defamation based on comments posted by users. In other words, if a user posted a defamatory comment, the ABC could be sued for not pulling it down. Essentially, they have to moderate all comments on every post. For an organisation like the ABC, they post so much stuff that the workload would be insurmountable, so they either block comments after a short time or altogether.

The group who went to the States included politicians from across our political spectrum from our most right wing Liberal Party member, the National Party which has its seats in rural areas, the more centrist Labor Party (no ‘u’) the most left wing party in Australia The Greens, and an independent Teal group member. The plotted history of Assange.... 1996 - convicted of Hacking. 2006 - founded Wikileaks 2008 - published accounts from Swiss bank, Bank Julius Baer. 2010 - published the Manning papers. Late 2010 - Sweden requested extradition for a "preliminary investigation" into accusations of sexual offences made in August 2010, while he was visiting Sweden. 2010 - he presented himself to the British Police, was granted bail, and then sought asylum in the Ecuadorian embassy. - on the grounds that the extradition was a means to place him in a location with an easier extradition path to the US. 2015 - Sweden announced that the statute of limitation on most charges had expired. 2019 - the Ecuadorian embassy expelled him, on mounting diplomatic grounds. 2019 - Sweden investigation was remounted and collapsed under judicial proceedings. 2019 - he was remanded into Prison, awaiting his extradition case to the US. 2024 - he agreed to a plea bargain with US, on the proviso that the presiding court would not be a direct US court, hence Saipan rather than Guam or American Samoa. 2024 - arrival in Australia.

From what I know of Assange I don’t think I would like him as a person. But what he did is essentially be a publisher of whistleblowers, how is that any different from other journalists that have done the same? And that he was being called a traitor, but I am not sure how he can be a traitor to a country he is not a citizen of? Sure maybe he should have redacted some names or something, I am not aware of all the details of what was published but the general principle is we should allow free speech and we should allow countries to extradite people who are not citizens for committing what they claim are crimes commit outside their country. Have any of you criticised for example North Korea or Iran recently? Maybe they want you to come and face trial for that?

Julian has my support for exposing the crimes . If it’s true the docs he published included details of undercover international informants to western governments, I feel that is unforgivable - if true he could have redacted those details before publishing, and if true, I’m not proud to have him back and free.

He published as a journalist information provided to him from a whistle blower, Chelsea Manning who leaked the documents (and whether you agree or disagree with what she did) committed a crime got her 35year sentence commuted after 7 years. Julian who should not have been subject to US law, or have had freedom of the press (first amendment right) (If you're going to expect someone outside your country to honour your law the least you could do is give them the same rights you give those under your law.) Suffered captivity for 20 years. Sounds like your love for freedom only extends till it might make the government look weak

If the Espionage Act of USA applies to imprison an Australian who wasn't in Australia and wasn't breaking Australian law, where and when do all adult Australians get to vote for Trmp or Biden in November?

As an aussie, i wouldnt want to go pissing off the usa by leeking some of there important documents. I think he's done his time for his crimes. Being stuck in the embassy for that long is like a prison sentence

There’s certainly differing opinions on Julian here in Oz but safe to say, it’s such an important part of history now we need to remember ALL of what happened. Btw I don’t understand why Australian media has their comments turned off on RU-vid but it seems all of the major players always do it 🤷🏻‍♂️

If the US govt had ignored this whole thing, it would have been over in a few days. People would have gasped for 5 minutes, then the news would have moved on. Julian Assange was made an example of to discourage other whistle-blowers. He suffered for the truth. I hope everything goes well for him going forward. Cheers from Downundah, mate. 🍻

I think we should ask Biden to give Julian a full pardon. he was guilty of journalism, not espionage - that was Chelsea Manning who was freed after serving a very short sentence. BTW does anyone want a couple of used ‘Free Julian Assange’ t-shirts? Or should I frame them? We now need to raise funds to pay the cost of his flight from Britain - more than $500,000

😂😂😂😂😂 ABC News is legacy media and was launched in 1932 when radio came to Australia and is based on the BBC model with no advertising. However, it is not a subscription service and is funded by the Australian Government in a hands off approach and is consistently voted as the most trustworthy news sources in Australia. It is only now entering the RU-vid space have already developed its own platform in the iPlayer.

This from an Australian, I'm very happy that Jullian is now back in Australia and is a free man. OK, what he did was against US law, but he was not in the US, not a US citizen and he wasn't the one who actually stole these documents. I also look at what is happening in the US now, with one high profile man who stole or took thousands of highly classified documents, showed friends, employees and unknown amount of other people. What has happened to this man, nothing, brags about it, they are mine, lied, refused to hand them over, tried to hide them. Jullian has paid a very high price for what he did, didn't get off scott free like that other sicko.
