Hello from Switzerland, Carnival is also represented here, it varies regionally, the two most famous places are Lucerne and Basel. Basel in particular has a very long and cherished carnival tradition (first mentioned in 1376). During the entire carnival week, the city is, so to speak, "offline", in the sense that you do not need to call or visit any company or authority, as most of them are absent or have reduced operations (emergency services excluded, of course). It begins on Monday morning (at 4 a.m.), when all the lights (shop windows, street lamps, etc.) are turned off, the cliques with drums and whistles, accompanied by (still) often hand-painted lanterns (sometimes it requires up to 4 porters). City. The cortège (= parade) then takes place during the day, accompanied by Cluquen floats with their decorations, costumes and sometimes impressive masks. The Guggen music should also not be missing. Just as special as the lanterns are the schnitzel benches (rhyming verses, spoken or sung) in Basel. These are in the traditional Basel dialect (which makes it difficult for non-Swiss people, as it can hardly be translated, even with Google), with the content covering events in general, politically, sportingly, sometimes related to celebrities, be it local, national or international . There are only a few restrictions in terms of content, obviously being racist or inciting violence in some way would cross the boundaries, but usually the lyrics are ironic, funny, sometimes pointed. All the hustle and bustle takes place Monday to Wednesday, with the official end being the finale on Thursday. I am from Düsseldorf and for me carnival is the festival of freedom of expression/speech and equality. Even under Nazi rule, we were not deprived of the opportunity to speak out about the government. Some carnivalists were executed because they criticized too much, but people didn't let them keep their mouths shut. Unfortunately, being able to express one's opinion is so common these days that it has almost become just a party and alcohol event, although carnival is actually about more than that. It's a shame that people are no longer so aware of how valuable this freedom is.

Karneval is much bigger in traditionally catholic regions in germany than in more protestant areas. Most of german immigrants in the US were protestants, may be that is why Karneval is not that big thing in the US.

With the exception of Bavaria, where it's not that big despite the whole state bing mainly catholic

The "cutting of the tie" is also symbolic. It is meant to symbolize cutting of the "manhood", to make the women the dominants. Like Feli said: It is all about role reversal.

I was going to write the same. This whole equality topic is quite a bit older than one might think 😉
@Efka68

I wouldn't say "manhood". I think it is more the equality between the simple people and the nobles.

@@Efka68 You may not say that, but I know a LOT of people who say it and mean it like that.

@@m.h.6470 The nobles in the past which were in a ruling position mainly were men. With the ties the people cut it from persons in a ruling position.

@@Efka68 The time periods when "nobles" existed in Germany and the time period when ties were/are a thing, doesn't really overlap. And if you would actually look up the origin of the habit, you would figure out, that it had absolutely nothing to do with nobles or persons in a ruling position, but merely with the fact, that women get the upper hand over THEIR man.

The american helloween is a more fun version of a tradition from I think celtic people. So way back in the ancient history. The purpose was to scare the evil ghosts.

I think its a bit weird that in her entire video about carneval she didnt say a word about what german carneval is a about. It was mainly introduced to mock the political class (prussians, thats why the costumes) and the powerful, thats why the nazis didnt like it at all and restricted or punished them severally

Feli is not from the Rhineland. The street Karneval is great there and not only drinking.The whole mood is in fever.

I come from a very irreligious area in eastern Germany where carnival plays no role at all. Possibly 5% of the population. I think this will be the case everywhere in the former socialist East, except for small parts of Thuringia. We make fun of carnival and carnivalists, but I would dress up and get drunk if I were in Cologne at the time.

Hey, quick note. It's not true that carnival, or Fasching, is celebrated all over Germany. The main areas are the "Rhineland" and southwest Germany (Alemannische Fastnacht). In the north, center and east of Germany, there are only a few spots. From people who once moved here from "carnival areas". We in northern Germany in particular have nothing, absolutely nothing, to do with this thing. It is tolerated, nothing more. On a small scale, schools and kindergartens have taken it upon themselves to celebrate carnival for a day, simply because it's fun for the children to dress up. For most people in the carnival-free part of Germany, carnival of the Rhineland kind is just "put-on merriment". It starts at a very specific time and ends at a very specific time. Like a service. Strange tradition. Hihi!!! 👺👹😖🎈🍻🤔
