You DON'T get in trouble for " jaywalking" in the UK because it's called CROSSING THE ROAD !! We are taught how to do it as kids !! How can crossing the road be illegal !? An allotment is not a community garden. You rent a piece of land from the local council and you can grow fruit and vegetables there.

Now retired, but as a past employer of 50 staff in the UK the last thing I wanted was for a sick member of staff with flu or COVID to come into work knowing that, and give it to the rest of the staff and myself, and our customers and clients. It could potentially bring the company to a halt. So as well as a fair sick leave policy being good for employees ( giving them support and less stress), it also makes perfect sense for the company. We had a comprehensive sick leave policy which was fair to all but could identify those who were malingering through the need for “return to work “ interviews, doctors notes etc. I have to admit that over 20 years I can only think of 2 people who tried to abuse sick leave, the vast majority of staff didn’t. A successful company works with trust on both the employer and employee side.

It’s all relative - poor quality food = poor health. Cost of living is high in uk but STILL far lower than in the USA - I always assumed EVERYTHING was cheaper in the us because it’s a far larger market, companies can buy products in bulk for cheaper but at the till I am shocked to see that most things are actually more expensive in the states. Even food - even crappy cheap processed food in the USA is more expensive than good nutritious food in the uk - after a lifetime of wishing I lived in the USA but after living there for a years I left pretty darn quickly when I realised how unequal and uncaring the big society is about the poor . I am now SO GRATEFUL and appreciative to be a Brit living in the uk today / it’s far from perfect but a damn sight better than the rest. Brits also don’t have to worry about deductibles or being held to ransome by immoral pharmacy companies or corrupt hospitals - oh you touched your own baby? I want my cut of that - $100 added to the bill (!) Individually paying for meds and healthcare?! - everyone loses that way. In the USA you have private and public schools. The public schools don’t threaten the private ones - the two systems mean EVERYONE gets an education if they want it. Yet brainwashed suspicious Americans scream “socialist conumizzzzm!” At the thought of our nhs - which keeps more average Brits healthy and alive for longer than the average American. We have private and free healthcare - the public healthcare is as good ast the private healthcare usually because it’s the same doctors from the same universities - but on the nhs you’ll have to wait longer, and that’s a fact of life. but that’s still preferable to getting it NEVER (!) how is that so difficult to understand? The amount of second hand embarrassment I feel for the usa when I see Americans with good jobs - teachers etc on gofundme pages begging for money from strangers so that they can have operations that will make their lives worth living without becoming bankrupt. If you ever get a universal nhs of your own - when you do have it and look back at the humiliating demeaning things your own people had to do just to be able to live a life free from pain or worry / it’ll be Americas second greatest shame after slavery. That’s not acceptable in the richest nation on earth - you give education for free but not healthcare? So your people are good enough to teach to read so that they can perform mundane low paid jobs and manual work but if they get injured they’re not valued enough to be given a universal healthcare free from confusing contracts about all that nasty deductible nonsense? America isn’t a classless society - it’s class-less , vulgar and unfair, nor is it gods land of the free Americans are more class divided than the Brits. Last month the kings sister princess Ann spent a week amongst us common riffraff at her local nhs hospital In the usa the rich are the aristocracy and everyone else can go jump - horrible. Give me the nhs and lower wages over the American nightmare ANYDAY (!) Because now - everyone who isn’t rich in America is still a slave who’s life is worth nothing when no one is going to foot the bill for their operation.

Its the same in the usa, they have federal income tax which is in addiction to state tax that they all have to pay, even if they move country they cant escape federal income taxes without renouncing citizenship. Their brackets are 11% tax at $11,000 and their second bracket is 22%. So most of them probably pay 11% to 22% tax off the rip federally before any state taxes and many many other random bills and taxes americans have to pay unique to their location all while having no public transport so they have to pay for a car, they also have to pay on average $700 a month YES THIS IS AVERAGE for health insurance and this $700 a month DOESNT cover all bills, they still have to pay co-pay and hope to find a doctor that accepts their insruance.

Yes, but now that tax threshold has been frozen until 2028 (credible rumours say it will soon be extended "til 2029). This effectively means we're all paying more income tax by the rate of inflation year on year. It is also drawing many more people into paying tax at the lower income end, and a lot of ordinary workers into the higher (40%) tax band.

I attended junior prep school in England (aged 8-13) and got 100 percent on naming the 50 states after they increased from 48 whilst I was there. I think most A-level geography students in the UK could do that too. Last Christmas, during our annual online family quiz, the geography geeks among my grandsons got 45 and 44 of them. They were then 13 year olds at school in BC and Queensland, respectively. Most people living in houses have back gardens that are mainly lawned with flower beds and sometimes trees. Flats may have community gardens which are communal spaces. Allotments are plots of land, usually rented, where people grow their own produce. I used to live in a house with a garden which backed onto a huge plot of land which was used as allotments. We could walk out our back garden gate to attend to growing our own vegetables.

Having an allotment is not always fun. A lot have very bizarre rules about what you can do or grow, and how quickly. Some have very few rules, and do nothing when other allotmetn holders steal tools or plants straight from your plot. We had one a few years ago, and we had tools stolen from our shed by the woman on the plot next to us, then she sent her eldery father to threaten me - and other plot holders allowed their dogs to run loose and defecate all over other people's plots. Also, Joel, one other point she should have asked her friend when talking about taxes - as an employee of a company, did she need to use a private accountant just to fill her tax forms about what she may need to pay annually? Remember, here in the UK as an employee, we use the P.A.Y.E system, the employer/company handles the paperwork to pay our various taxes - meaning what we get paid weekly, fortnightly, or monthly (depending how you are paid - is then what you know you have left to spend or use each time . . . no worries about having to save money to pay any annual taxes to the Gov . . . Although it doesn't work that way for any self-employed person, or company owner, as they have to do their own books/taxes, with more work involved - or perhaps use an accountant or hire one if they have any employees in their business as well . . .

Most workplaces have their own absence policy for sickness. For instance with mine you're allowed 3 periods of sickness a year before you reach stage one, you then have a meeting to discuss your absences and then it resets. If you have three more periods of absence within the 12 months, you get stage 2 which involves another meeting and it resets again. If you have 3 more then you have Stage 3 which can lead to getting fired.

So it's worth noting that whilst your employer cannot legally limit your sick days, the situation is more complicated than that. 1. You have a maximum amount of days you can be off sick before you need a doctors note. 2. Your employer stops paying you for your sick days after a certain point and at that point you move to Statutory Sick Pay, which is paid by the Government and is not a whole lot of money. 3. Most places will put you on some kind of formal or informal "targets" if you are sick too much, the impact of that will vary from being unable to qualify for a payrise or bonus or some form of benefit the employer offers, through to losing your job. This is really only if you have a lot of sickness that doesn't have a doctor's note - you won't get fired for having a serious medical condition or anything.

I've found that the community aspect has been very strong in the allotments I've had. Lots of annual events, BBQs, competitions, open days etc. Lots also have a community section too, where those without their own plot can get involved. I was off work for 1 1/2 years (3 operations) starting 2006 - 2008. When I went back to work (a firm is not allowed to fire you if you are off sick). I had a total of 69 vacation days which I had to use. 9 days from 2006, 30 days from 2007 and 30 days from 2008. To get rid of the excess days I worked for 1 week and was sent on vacation for 3 weeks (15 days), came back for 2 weeks and then sent again for 4 weeks (20 days) which left 34 days for summer vacation 2008.

The allotment is a story on its own , the main objective was to grow fresh vegetables. In some cases chickens were kept for fresh eggs some even had pigs that were owned by a co-op of people for the pork. Many men used it as an escape once the planting was done a little maintenance then sit down and have a drink , beer , and in my father's case a drag on the pipe. They're very popular again now mainly due to inflation and food prices, but also the trend in organic food and knowing where your food came from.

Hi Joel Every employer varies, but I work for the NHS and they allow up to 4 or 5 sickness episodes before you will then be called to a first formal, which is basically a meeting with your manager and somebody from HR who will then try to understand why you have been off sick so much and whether there is anything they can do as a company to support you back at work and make things a little easier. Here in the UK if your sick, your sick. And yea, people do take advantage out of it all the time. But that’s why the 4 sick occasions (doesn’t have to be a day, you could be off months and it would still be one occasion) allowance a year is used, to try and whittle out who is really sick and who is playing the system. After the first meeting if you are sick anymore in the year, it goes to a second, which runs just like the first, but if you are sick again without appropriate reasons or grounds after that, then it’s disciplinary action. So there is a system for dealing with people who take the piss out of the system. I hope that helps! Love your videos, come back to the UK soon, if your ever in Somerset, I’ll happily show you around :) Also, annual leave and sick leave is completely separate. We also get sick pay when we are off for sickness, but that again varies company by company

In the UK if you come into the office with the cold or the flu you are told to go home because you will end up giving it to others. If you are going to be sick for 7 days or more you must get a note from your Doctor (it is called a "sick" note) confirming you are unable to work and you will be entitled to this on full pay. If your Doctor confirms you will be off work for a long period of time your company must pay you SSP (Statutory Sick Pay) for up to 28 weeks put not on full pay, I think it about £470ish per month. The amount of paid holidays of 28 (20 mandatory plus 8 bank holidays) days is indeed correct but your employer for the needs of the business can ask you to work on a bank holiday but you will be able to take that day at another time when the business is less busy.

When I worked for Barclays 20 years ago or so I, unfortunately, was off ill for 2 protracted periods about 5 years apart. With the first I had a day off feeling unwell and told my boss that I would go to my GP the following day if I felt the same, which I did. I was signed off by my GP as I was so ill (I had gone hoping that I wasn't wasting her time). She actually said that if my breathing had not improved in a couple of days I needed to be admitted to hospital. In total I was signed off for 6 weeks and during that time my boss called me to see how I was and if there was anything that I needed. During the last week I went and stayed with my brother and his wife (I live alone) and on the day that I went home I told them that I was going back to work the next day. My sister in law told me that I wasn't fit enough to do so but I did anyway. After 3 days at work I was off for another fortnight! The second was similar except that I was off for longer and had a couple of visits by my boss at a local cafe to talk things through. My return to work was staged so that I went back part time and slowly built up my hours over a month or so to full time. My dedication to my work was well known so they knew that I wasn't pulling a fast one. On top of this the office was a bit like a family and we all looked after and cared about one another and the bank did care about the health and welfare of its staff. Furthermore, I received full pay on both occasions and everything medicalwise was free apart from the prescriptions.

So, in the UK You get 7 days self certified (including weekends, and days off) but after that point you need FIT note from a doctor to verify you're unfit for work. An employer legally has to pay you Statutory Sick Pay (SSP) for 28 weeks after which point you would have to claim Benefits such as Universal Credit. Some employers may top up you SSP, for example NHS will ensure you have full wages for 6 months I believe. However, after a certian amount of time they can force you to use some of your holiday days. However, they can also refer you for an occupational health assessment, which is a personal, usually a nurse, who you will visit or call you, ask you question about your sickness etc and find out if any can be done to get you back into work etc ie going back part time for so long for example. After a set amount of time if your not clear on when you can return they are legally allowed to terminate your contract.

The sick allowance in the UK is slightly overstated. She's right that there's no technical limit on sick pay, so you can't be fired for being sick too much, but the employer is only technically obliged to pay Statutory Sick Pay, which is just £116 a week. So not really enough to live on. Most people will have a contract where they're paid in full though. I don't work in the UK, but I work for a UK company, and we can sign ourselves off for 2 days but on the third day, we have to get a doctor's note. And we can only sign ourselves off 5 times a year. You will also typically get a meeting with your manager if you're sick on multiple occasions, which is very much in the "Is there anything we can do to help?" vein, but clearly with an undertone of "We've got our eye on you."

My experience of UK sick days is that people who are inclined to take advantage of it will also be poor workers and that will limit their progress anyway, whereas good workers don't take sickies. It pretty soon becomes clear who is genuinely ill a lot and who it just trying it on. Also, with our fairly generous annual leave and standard hours in a week, it isn't so important to save a days leave if you just really need a day off. And of course if you are part time you don't get paid for being ill.

FOR BEING ILL. Depending on the employer policy you can call in ill for up to one working week on full pay, after that you need a fit or sick note from the doctor. They can sign you off for as long as you need and revisit that weekly monthly etc... Depending on the employer but generally you will get full pay for 6months then after that 50% for 6 months then zero. If your company doesn't offer sick pay you can claim £70 per week from the government. Hope this clears up.

Most employers have a point with sickness absence when they will start to question it, this only short self-certified absences. A long-term illness with a doctor's letter can be unlimited. My employer has a threshold of eight but I have a condition which will cause more so I have an agreement that we will look at it if it reaches 30 in a rolling year. I have some disabilities which means I have more medical appointments than most people. E.g. I’ve just spent two days/one night in hospital this is disability leave, it is a separate type of paid leave. All my medical appointments are part of that. Allowed six weeks of that a year. I am a public sector worker and my condition got worse whilst I have been employed there. Would struggle to hold a job in the private sector. Absolute minimum of leave is 20 days plus public holidays, some places say 28 days because you can be required to work on some public holidays, some shops are open on all public holidays (but you may struggle to find one on Christmas Day or Easter Monday (large stores cannot open by law on those two days). Most places give more than that. 30 or 35 days is not that uncommon. I get 32 a year (plus public holidays) but can carry over up to 10 each year. I have other friends who get more.

If you're really ill and off work, you can 'self-certificate' for 7 days, but after that a doctor has to issue a medical sick note, also most big employers have a procedure in place, that monitors your sick days, when not validated by a doctor, and the procedure is graded, so stage 1 through to stage 4 were you can be deemed unfit for work.
